1 Carroll, Lewis. (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.) Afterword by Anna South. ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND & THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE.
London Collector's Library 2004 1904633862 / 9781904633860 Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ John Tenniel.
283 pp, 6 3/16" H. Crimson cloth with gold lettering/ship on spine, blind stamped ship on front board. All edges gilt, patterned endpapers, integral ribbon bookmark. B&w illustrations. "When Alice tumbles down, down, down a rabbit hole one hot summer's afternoon in pursuit of a White Rabbit she finds herself in Wonderland. And here begin the fantastical adventures that will see her experiencing extraordinary changes in size, swimming in a pool of her own tears and attending the very maddest of tea parties. For Wonderland is no ordinary place and the characters that populate it are quite unlike anybody young Alice had ever met before. In this imaginary land she encoutners the savagely violent Queen, the lachrymose Mock Turtle, the laconic Cheshire Cat and the hookah-smoking caterpillar, each as surprising and outlandish as the next. 'Through the Looking-Glass' continues Alice's bizarre adventures, in which she meets more outlandish creations, including the Red Queen, the White Queen, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Humpty Dumpty and the White Knight." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket hasminor wrinkle a top of spine, very minor rubbing.

WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD., Fisher, Margery.
3 Fisher, Margery. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD.
New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's name and date on half-title page. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on spine.

THE NITEHOOD., Nickless, Will.
9 Nickless, Will. THE NITEHOOD.
Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, 1966, first edition.
136 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations by the author. "Mr Harris, (a rat) who has come into money, is eager to improve the social tone of his friends and neighbours, and to win for himself the recognition of an esta blished place in society; he aspires to a knighthood. His efforts to enlighten the deeply conservative little animals around him meets with little success: how he fares in his more ambitious aim is told in the pages of this story. Assist e d b y t h e ingenious poet (and valet, Beddoes Waterbrook, a rabbit) and by the accidental cross purposes that occur in the larger world of the Others, strange things happen and curious things emerge....To suspend disbelief and begin the story is t o e nt e r a ne w world: a world separate but intertwined with that of our everyday experience. There is a cricket match, of which the strangest thing is perhaps that it remains unrecorded by Neville Cardus, for it is impossible to imagine him ab se nt on su ch a n o cc asion. Then there is Old Beak and Claws (the owl) and his collection of snuff boxes....It may not always be, as Otter Mullet the fishmonger remarks on one occasion, 'good natural history', but it is as well to remem ber some tim es tha t t her e a re o the r sorts of truth (and the poetic not least among them) that are even more important to human beings than that particular variety found within the covers of text books...." "Starting in present-day Holland, Poortvliet observes a nd illustrates, the many animals who inhabit this earth, in great detail. He may catch a rabbit, lynx, or partridge sauntering by, or admire a doe with her young right beneath him. He takes notice of foxes, deer, and wolves, and portrays them r e a l istically and convincingly. (He) continues on his journey to the sixteenth century, a time when humans coexisted with such predators as bears, lynx, and wolves, and other wild animals. His journey ends with the people and animals of the Ic e Ag e, a nd he imagines the now-extinct mammoth and other creatures in their natural habitat - the giant deer, the wooly rhinoceros, the wild horse, the auroch, and the cave lion. Exploring the boundaries of time travel and studying the wild anim al s a t c los e range, (he) documents their daily habits and rituals. His colorful account unfolds before us to reveal the many interesting facts about the mammals: How much bigger is an elk than a deer or a doe? How do you subdue a rhinoceros? How man y po unds is a mammoth's daily food intake?" Previous owner's signed bookplate on front free endpaper, tiny dint on bottom edge of each board. 12 Retan, Walter and Risom, Ole. (Richard Scarry.) THE BUSY, BUSY WORLD OF RICHARD SCARRY.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1997 0810940000 / 9780810940000 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Richard Scarry.
159 pp, 4to (12" H). Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout in color and b&w with photographs and reproductions of Scarry's work. "In dozens of books, with hundreds and hundreds of illustrations, Scarry revealed to kids that the everyday world was a place that could be understood - and that learning was fun. Scarry's 'Best Word Book Ever', for example, puts names to everyday objects; 'Busy, Busy World' explores geography country by country; and 'What Do People Do All Day?' delivers exactly what the title promises. Such a man is worth knowing more about, and this first biography presents the debonair, humorous, charming figure that Scarry was. In words and pictures the book traces (his) life from his roots in Boston to a post-World War II art school training and a brief career in advertising. Bored with selling products, Scarry put himself forward as a children's book illustrator and began turning out pictures for other people's words. Soon, he himself was writing texts, and eventually he hit upon the magic touch that catapulted him to nearly universal popularity - a menagerie full of animal characters who behaved like humans, but with unfailing good humor and grace. Through the personalities of these often mischievous creatures - the ubiquitous Lowly Worm, Tinker and Tanker, Sergeant Murphy - whom children could identify with but not have to worry about, Scarry conceived a parade of books that parents and children alike could pore over for pictures or read time after time. Long before Waldo challenged young eyes to find him in picture books, Goldbug was hiding here and there on Scarry's pages. Learning more about the charm of those books and the genius of the man who created them will enlighten and delight any reader of this book." Small tear (archivally taped) at bottom edge of title page, very light wear and a few tiny dents at bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear, edge wrinkling, one small tear archivally taped, crease at top edge of front flap.

THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY., Robinson, H.M.
15 Robinson, H.M. THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY.
Toronto Coles 1975 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good- Charles Gasche.
348 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1879. "In approximately 1870, one H.M. Robinson, writer and traveller, journeyed by dog sled to the Hudson's Bay Territory. The account of his months there is fascinating not only for its first-hand look at life in northern Canada, but also for this cultured man's view of it. The book includes excursions by dog sled and canoe, as well as hunting expeditions. It documents life in a Hudson's Bay Company fort, in a fur-hunters' camp, and in an Indian settlement. There are absorbing accounts of voyageurs, the Blackfeet Indians, 'nomadic' hunters, and medicine men, as well as breath-taking descriptions of the landscape. Since little knowledge of the North was generally available, Mr. Robinson's commentary helped to shape the attitudes of early Canadians, thus eventually influencing government policy. Through this book, modern readers can achieve a more complete idea of what it was like to be alive in the North in the 1870's. But more than that, we are able to trace the roots of the nation's successes and failures in dealing with people and the natural resources of the vast expanse once known as the Hudson's Bay Territory." Dust jacket has light wdge wear/wrinkling, two taped (inside) edge tears - one with creases, minor rubbing and soiling.

London Frederick Warne 1992 0723237778 / 9780723237778 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Beatrix Potter.
240 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). "The chief recipients (of her letters) were the family of her former governess, Annie Moore. Beatrix wrote them long, lively 'picture letters', copiously illustrated with witty drawings and full of funny anecdotes about her pets and her holidays. As she became established as an author she continued to write to young relatives, members of her publisher's family and the enthusiastic fans who loved her books. Sometimes these letters take the form of a supposed correspondence between different animal characters from the Peter Rabbit stories, all written in miniature with their own tiny envelopes. It is a measure of the delight with which Beatrix Potter's letters were received and treasured that so many of them have survived to this day. The picture letters and miniature letters (in this book) are shown in facsimile and (it) is illustrated with photographs and Beatrix Potter's own drawings. Judy Taylor has introduced each section with an account of the children who received the letters, many of whose stories have never been told before. The result is an intriguing and attractive book that reveals much new information about Beatrix Potter and above all demonstrates her unfailing power to beguile children and adults alike." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny dents on bottom edge of boards, some areas of faint discoloration at bottom of boards. Dust jacket has some edge wrinkling, light edge wear, one small taped tear at top edge, light dampness stains at inside bottom edge, light rub marks.
