University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, 1989.
544 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0877452652 "(The) story of the men who spent their youth designing and building England's first flying-machines: the men who pioneered the British aircraft industry. Some of their airc raft have achieved immortality - the legendary Pup, Camel, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. But of the men who designed and built them, men like Frederick Handley Page, Tommy Sopwith, George Holt Thomas and Geoffrey de Havilland, perhaps o n l y R o l ls and Royce are still household names. These pioneers of aviation development began to build their empires during Worl;d War I, although several of them crashed during the bleak period that followed. World War II revived their fortun es , as so me ho w they met the challenge of enormously increased production and helped save England from invasion. They tested the early jets and speedily built the first post-war jet airliner. But already they were making errors which would res ult i n b a nkr upt cie s, forced mergers and foreign takeovers. Peter King describes the knight in all their glamour, skill, idiosyncrasy, greed, flair and desire for power. Quotations from previously unpublished papers, from colleagues and cont empo rar ies, a nd f rom cust omers (governments, the British Air Force, commercial airlines) for the first time describe how wilful they could be, as well as how brilliantly enterprising and entertaining." 18 Macintyre, Donald. THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
208 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "The momentous nature of the Battle of the Atlantic, a struggle whose outcome was in the balance for over three years, cannot be exaggerated. Had the Germans succeeded in establishing a decisive mastery in the Atlantic, Britain would have been deprived of the essential American supplies - above all, arms and food - on which she depended for the continuance of the war abroad and for her own day-to-day survival; nor, later could the Americans have given their vital support. The story of how, instead, the Germans were defeated in the Atlantic, is a complicated and exciting one which Captain Donald Macintyre, a naval historian who himself played an active part in the battle, is well qualified to tell. Not only does he analyse the strategic issues, above all the importance of the convoy system and of continuous air-cover, he also describes the battle from the viewpoint of the participants themselves. The long drawn-out duel between escort and U-boat is made vivid by quotations from the log-books of some of the ablest escort-commanders, such as Captain Walker and Lieutenant-Commander Gretton, and from the combat-reports of the German U-boat 'aces', Prien, Kretschmer and Schepke. Complementing these eyewitness accounts, nearly 50 unfamiliar photographs, drawn from German as well as British sources, make the courage and endurance of all those who fought in the Atlantic the more immediate; the strategic and tactical aspects of the battle are likewise clarified by the specially prepared maps and diagrams." Light to moderate edge wear to boards, very light browning to edges of boards, very small light stain on title page, very soft corner crease on first few pages, light erasure mark on rear pastedown. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap folds, a few small scratches and scuffs, a few small edge tears with old tape repair, small waterstain on inside of spine, browning at edges, a few brown stains on inside.

A HISTORY OF DIDSBURY., Million, Ivor R. Foreword by Lady Simon of Wythenshawe.
20 Million, Ivor R. Foreword by Lady Simon of Wythenshawe. A HISTORY OF DIDSBURY.
Didsbury Civic Society / E. J. Morten, Didsbury, Manchester, 1969, reprint.
142 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "In this book the author presents the results of research he has made into the history of a more than usually interesting suburb of a great city (Manchester), based not so much on the work of earlier writers as on the inspection of original documents wherever they might have been. It was inevitable that a quest so detailed should have yielded a crop of original discoveries. How many people know that the artificial banks of the River Mersey date back to the thirteenth century; that armies of both Cavaliers and Roundheads mustered on the very land where Didsbury Library stands or that, in 1651, an army of invading Scots was routed on Didsbury Golf Course where many of them lie buried today? Mr. Million has taken nothing for granted and does not ask his readers to take anything on trust. His book is liberally provided with quotations from original sources, many of which have never previously been published. There ar e few districts in the country of which so comprehensive a history has been written."
