BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY., Boyce, Gerry.
1 Boyce, Gerry. BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY.
Toronto Natural Heritage / Dundurn 2008 1550028634 / 9781550028638 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
310 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) treasure trove of stories - 'glorious and not-so-glorious' - embodying the history of the city of Belleville (Ontario) and its beautiful surroundings. Gerry Boyce, the dean of the area's historians, has done a masterful job of pulling together the best of Belleville's storied past, episode by episode, decade by decade: here one learns about the Native roots of the place, its debatable 'discovery' by Champlain, its hot-headed pre-Confederation politics, its involvement in Spiritualism in the 1850s and the spread of prostitution in the Victorian 1870s. Moving forward from the days of Susanna Moodie and Mackenzie Bowell, it provides an entertaining and probing stroll through the past 110 years, reminding readers of such national events as the sensational 1959 victory by the Belleville MacFarlands over the Russians at the World Amateur Hockey Championship in Prague; and then, less well known, the financially crippling news of secret payments made to the players. Gerry Boyce (reminds) us that our history, be it local or national, is much more lively and intriguing than we often realize." Michael Peterman . Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

THE ROAD TO KIP'S COVE., Cook, Lyn.
3 Cook, Lyn. THE ROAD TO KIP'S COVE.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1973 0770500617 / 9780770500610 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Good- William Wheeler.
222 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w drawings. "(When Kip) saw the old pioneer school on the Bay of Quinte that his parents proposed to make over for a summer home, something stirred his blood. What followed was actually the most wonderful summer he had ever experienced in all of his twelve years. It began when Kip heard there was an Indian Reserve nearby. Then he met Dan, the Indian boy, in the village general store. (This) is the story of his friendship with Dan, of his job in Mr. Mosely's greenhouse and his explor-ation of the countryside, and, above all, of the eventful canoe trip he and Dan take down the Trent Canal from Lakefield to Trenton. Their trail is strewn with adventures of all kinds, from their first camp-site when they hear the harsh voice in the dark, to the strange sounds at midnight on Spook Island, and the accident at Campbellford. The climax of the journey takes them in search of a pioneer ghost. Woven into the tale of summer adventures and Indian legends is Kip's longing for a dog and how he acquires Scout only to lose him again, but - there is a happy ending." Book is very slightly cocked, minor browning at top edge of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny crease at top corner of page 181 to 200, soft dog-ear crease at top of page leaf 197/198. Dust jacket has small edge pieces missing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few edge tears and on rear hinge, edge creases - mainly at bottom of front panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES., Croil, James.
4 Croil, James. STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good
381 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, maps. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "(This) is an exciting study of the development of steam navigation in Canada. In tracing the transition from sailing ships to the paddle-steamer, and from the paddle-steamer to the revolutionary screw-propeller, the author writes with the kind of imaginative insight that brings back to life a past age of challenge. One of the delightful features of this book is the vivid study of shipping on the Great Lakes. Croil's account of the lake ships catches the imagination with its comprehensive study of past glories: LaSalle's schooner of ten tons, whose journey was halted by the Niagara Falls; the first lake steamer, the 'Frontenac' (1816), said to be the best example of naval architecture in North America; the 'Queen Charlotte' (1818), which carried passengers from Prescott to the stage-coach station at the head of the Bay of Quinte; the 'Gore', built at Niagara in 1838, which was one of the earliest passenger steamers on Georgian Bay; and the 'Bruce Mines', which carried copper ore on Lake Huron. The reader will be equally delighted by the large number of illustrations Croil provides. (They) present a glorious pictorial record of early shipping, showing the curious Miller Twin-Boat of 1788, C.P.R.'s astonishingly modern 'Empress' line of 1891, the Ottawa river steamer, the 'Sovereign', and the 'Passport', a mail paddle-steamer which sailed from Lake Ontario to Montreal." Dust jacket has minor edge rubbing, very tiny tear at bottom of spine.

6 Heriot, George. Introduction to New Edition by James J. Talman. TRAVELS THROUGH THE CANADAS: CONTAINING A DESCRIPTION OF THE PICTURESQUE SCENERY ON SOME OF THE RIVERS AND LAKES; WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE PRODUCTIONS, COMMERCE, AND INHABITANTS OF THOSE PROVINCES.
Edmonton M.G. Hurtig 1971 0888300360 / 9780888300362 First Hurtig Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ George Heriot.
602 pp, 10 1/2" H. Red cloth covered boards, black title block with gilt lettering/decoration on spine. Original publisher's cardboard slipcase with titling on spine and one side. Black, white & cream illustrations (several fold-out) plus colour fold-out map (collated). Title continues: "To which is sub-joined a comparative view of the manners and customs of several of the Indian nations of North and South America." "Heriot went to Quebec in 1792 as a civil servant and became deputy postmaster general of Canada in 1799. Until 1816 he remained in Canada, travelling at least as far west as Niagara Falls, perhaps Detroit, and to some extent in the United States, sketching along the way. His legacy - his water-colors and this book, an unsurpassed intimate history of 'the lakes, the rivers, and cataracts, the villages, farm-houses, and townships of Canada'. Although British reviewers of the day were unimpressed by richly detailed descriptions of a mere colony, the extent and precision of Heriot's account is a virtue one hundred and sixty years later. He wrote at length of each of the major waterways in Upper and Lower Canada which were, as James Talman points out in his introduction, 'of first importance in the life of the people as a means of travel and a source of water power'. And his sketches of buildings, particularly in Quebec, are invaluable since many of those buildings were already falling into ruin when Heriot saw them." Very minor wrinkling at top og spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Slipcase has very light edge wear/rubbing, tiny slight puncture on one side, slight bump at top of spine.

Three volume set - volumes I & III are hard covers in dust jackets, volume II is soft cover. Volume I: The French Regime - 176 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - "(C)ontains a fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by individuals involved in the founding and settling of Canada. Through their own words these men chronicle their ambitions, deeds, and frustrations, from the time of Jacques Cartier's first voyage of exploration in 1534 to the surrender of Montreal to the British in 1760. Consisting mostly of translations from the original French, this book of documents was compiled with the purpose of placing an emphasis on the social and economic aspects of life during the French Regime in Canada." Volume II: Pre-Confederation - 242 pp, soft cover, 8 3/4" H - "(C)overs the history of British North America from the end of the French regime to 1867. Thus the history of Nova Scotia begins with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713; that of Canada with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. New-foundland I have commenced, a little arbitrarily, in 1713; for the Hudson's Bay Company and the West I have included the Charter of 1670. Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick begin with their official establishment as provinces carved out of the old Province of Nova Scotia, in 1769 and 1784 respect-ively. The basic element in the story illustrated in this book is preforce political and constitutional history (but) at the same time I have tried to present the way various societies in British North America lived and worked." Volume III: Confederation to 1949 - 334 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - (A) fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by some of the individuals who were actively involved in the events that led from consolidation of Confederation to Canada in the era of Post World War II. (It) indicates how Confederation was consolidated between 1967 and 1896. The emergence of modern Canada up to 1914 is then discussed. The First World War and the new economy that followed it then leads into the depression, the Second World War and industrialism. In the last part, external affairs are traced from 1914 on and Canada's international position is evaluated."
