436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(This) portrait of James Chalmers McRuer (1890-1985), one of Canada's most outstanding jurists, sets out to discover the character of the man who played a key role in the evolution of Canadian law. His career of more than fifty years included service on the Archambault Royal Commission on Penal Reform from 1936 to 1938. He was appointed judge on the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1944, chief justice of the Ontario High Court in 1945, and from 1964 to 1971 he was head of the Royal Commission Inquiry into Civil Rights. From 1964 to 1977 he was chairman and later vice-chairman of the Ontario Law Reform Commission. The driving spirit behind McRuer was his passion for justice, rising from his conviction that the justice system should serve the oppressed, regardless of their ability to pay. As a law reformer, McRuer saw a pressing need to adapt the law so that it could better serve all people in the changed conditions of the twentieth century. He possessed a sharp sensitivity to the often hidden injustices existing in an advanced industrial society and a bureaucratic state." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

6 Casswell, J.D., Q.C. Foreword By Lord Oaksey. A LANCE FOR LIBERTY
London George G. Harrap 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
325 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "His Honour J.D. Casswell, Q.C., has a unique record as an advocate: he has defended about forty men and women in this country (England) charged with murder, yet only five hanged. The rest were acquitted or their offence was reduced to a lesser charge. In these pages Casswell tells the behind-the-scenes story of some of the most celebrated murder trials in recent times. Among his clients were George Stoner, the 18-year-old chauffeur charged with the Bournemouth Villa Madeira Murder; Reginal Woolmington, the West Country farm labourer, who was the only man ever cleared of a murder charge by the House of Lords; sex-maniac Neville Heath; Mrs Cornock, the Bristol housewife accused of murdering her husband in his bath. Now that he has finally retired, Casswell for the first time gives his own account of these and other fascinating cases. But his book is not merely an eminent lawyer's professional reminiscences. It is a full autobiography, telling how the son of a Wimbledon businessman, with no relatives in the law, or other family advantages, rose to the heights of success in the most gruelling of professions." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has kight wrinkling at top of spine, very light edge wear, very tiny edge tear, slight browning at top of flaps, soiling on rear panel.

LOVE AND THE SPANISH., Epton, Nina.
8 Epton, Nina. LOVE AND THE SPANISH.
London Cassell 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- B.S. Biro, dust jacket illustration.
216 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Spain is a country of Magdalenes and repentant Don Juans as well as of gay sinners. This sums up concisely and colourfully - as far as love can ever be summed up - what must be considered as the Spanish attitude to love both in the past and indeed at the present time, for it has changed remarkably little over the centuries, and only now has enlightened thought to some extent begun to free love from strangling conventions and taboos. This country has produced Don Juan the greatest lover of all time, one of the most passionate and violent of all love stories in 'Carmen', the Inquisition with its scenes of extreme punishment and tortured flesh, the charming court-ship rites like the Fiesta de San Antonio, and the tragic genius of Lorca, preoccupied with beauty and death. How is it possible to reconcile the passionate guitar-playing majo with the cold, unyielding figure of the Inquisitor? Miss Epton gives us the answer - no easy achievement, for the Spaniards have never been inclined to communicate personal feelings about love either in their art or in their literature, and this reticence and pride still persists. She has met every type of Spaniard, from intellectuals to prostitutes, from students to doctors, and she has questioned them tactfully but ruthlessly. As a result, she has laid bare the myth of Romantic Spain, revealing the fundamental difference between Galicia, more tolerant of human weakness, and the severer South, which is one of the most striking character-istics of love in Spain." Light fading to top/bottom edges of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling, light browning on spine and very light on flap-folds, very light soiling on rear panel.

London Slightly Foxed 2011 190656227X / 9781906562274 First, Limited Edition. Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket - (as issued) Kath Walker.
199 pp, 7" H. No. 1792 in a limited edition of 2000. B&w drawings. Medium blue cloth with gilt lettering & decoration on spine, blindstamped logo on front board. Integral ribbon bookmark. The story of a Catholic prep school, opened in London in 1934. Includes anecdotes from "Old Boys" about their unconventional schooldays, including the horrors of school food ("lumpy custard; fish pie 'with bones'; liver 'with tubes'; water mash 'with eyes'; and a particularly nasty blancmange, whose thick unyielding skin was lightly topped with a layer of dust'). It describes an eccentric staff - "Many smoked and drank to a heroic extent, while corporal punishment was meted out with, it must be said, rather shocking regularity." "But the boys had fun, too. In general, they liked the emphasis on sport and all revelled in the Ascension Day outing to Box Hill where they were encouraged to do battle with water pistols (the teachers wore plastic macs). They were taught boxing and ballroom dancing; they had singing lessons - they learned English, French, Latin and maths, but not, for many years, science, for Mr Tibbits held that 'gentleman do not study science'." Quotes from an article by Sue Gaisford. Minor wrinkle at top of spine, very slight fading to top 1/4" of front board, several tiny spots of color loss at fore-edge and top edge of boards - also at bottom of rear hinge, one tiny corner bump.

MURDER AMONG GENTLEMEN: A HISTORY OF DUELLING IN CANADA., Halliday, Hugh A.
11 Halliday, Hugh A. MURDER AMONG GENTLEMEN: A HISTORY OF DUELLING IN CANADA.
Toronto Robin Brass 1999 1896941095 / 9781896941097 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
198 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "The formal duel, with its elaborate ritual and code of conduct, was once considered the 'honourable' way for self-styled gentlemen to settle disputes involving character and integrity. The law made no special provisions for duelling - the winner in a fatal contest was a murderer. But the prevailling sentiment that a duel was 'fair', and the fact that upper-crust combatants in the thinly populated 19th-century Canada were well-connected with the judiciary, meant that duellists usually escaped with little or no punishment. What is surprising is that so many came from the ranks of those whose job it was to uphold the law - lawyers, judges and politicians, including at least two future Fathers of Confederation and several chief justices. Hugh Halliday not only describes some of the most interesting duels that took place in Canada but looks at duelling in light of our human tendency to ritualize conflicts with codes of acceptable and unacceptable practice. He also examines the steps that often led to a duel, including the public 'posting' of allegations, or insults, that was frequently a part of the process." Appendix: The Irish Duelling Code. THE COUNTESS., Johns, Rebecca.
12 Johns, Rebecca. THE COUNTESS.
New York Crown 2010 0307588459 / 9780307588456 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
285 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "In this riveting dramatization of Erzebet Bathory's life, the countess tells her story in her own words, written to her only son - a final reckoning from his mother in an attempt to reveal the truth behind her downfall. Countess Bathory describes her upbringing in one of the most powerful noble houses in Hungary, recounting in loving detail her devotion to her parents and siblings as well as the heartbreak of losing her father at a young age. She soon discovers the price of being a woman in sixteenth-century Hungary as her mother arranges her marriage to Ferenc Nadasdy, a union made with the cold calculation of a financial transaction. Young Erzebet knows she has no choice but to accept this marriage even as she laments its loveless nature and ultimately turns to the illicit affections of another man. Seemingly resigned to a marriage of convenience and a life of surreptitious pleasure, the countess surprises even herself as she ignites a marital spark with Ferenc through the most unromantic of acts: the violent punishment of an insolent female servant. The event shows Ferenc that his wife is no trophy but a strong, determined woman more than capable of managing their vast estates during Ferenc's extensive military campaigns against the Turks. Her naked assertion of power accomplishes what her famed beauty could not: capturing the love of her husband. The countess embraces this new role of loving wife and mother, doing everything she can to expand her husband's power and secure her family's future. But a darker side surfaces as Countess Bathory's demand for virtue, obedience, and, above all, respect from her servants take a sinister turn. What emerges is not only a disturbing, unflinching portrait of the deeds that gave Bathory the moniker 'Blood Countess', but an intimate look at the woman who became a monster." Remainder dot on bottom of textblock near spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny bump on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "When the hated factor caught Mata the tinker at the salmon poaching he planned a terrible punishment for him. And it was on the night of Mata's ordeal in the midst of a fearful thunderstorm that Calum Og discovered how the mysterious Cave of Gold had been given its name. But the thunderstorm was the start of a blight upon the little crofting township - week after week of rain and mist, the crops failing for want of sun. And then the Stranger arrived, bringing with him sunshine and fresh hope. On the same day the factor fell from his horse, and lay unconscious, unable to prevent the Stranger from leading the boys in the building of a great fish-trap. But when the herring shoals came up the loch, and the trap was filled with fish, the men turned against the Stranger and drove him from the township; and the seemingly endless sunshine turned to torrential rain. And still the Cave remained a mystery to Calum Og until the night of the flood - the night of the 13th of October 1877, when he learned the secret of that Cave of Gold....What really happened to Mata the tinker? Was it mere chance that the factor fell from his horse the day the Stranger came ashore? Who is the Stranger? Set in the Isle of Skye in the harsh 1870s, (this book) will be enjoyed by everyone with a sense of history and a taste for the unusual." Presidio, Novato, CA, 1988.
280 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0891413162 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "August 1944 was a crucial turning point in World War II: the fate of the Axis powers was sealed on the plains of France during these 31 days. It was a month of bewildering activity: rapid buildup of forces, dramatic changes in strategy, unparalleled movement of forces, the coming of age of the American armies, and the flowering of the concept of unified Allied command. In this day -by-day account, the story of this remarkable month is told through the eyes of participants on both the Allied and German sides. The action is followed through the bocage country of Normandy, the breakout at Avranches, the push toward Le Ma n s , t h e encirclement of Falaise, the invasion of southern France, the taking of Paris, the dash across northern France. It is a war of movement, of sweeping envelopment and lightning advances. The Allies move across France in what General Pa tt on d e sc ri be s as 'probably the fastest and biggest pursuit in history'. The Germans endure terrible punishment as they gather their dwindling forces, held hostage by delays and unrealistic orders emanating from Hitler's Wolf Lair, 1,000 mil es awa y."
