"(C)elebrates the quincentenary of the introduction of printing at Oxford with a pictorial history of its subsequent progress, illustrated by the books, documents, and pictures which are its tangible record. The story, although it properly begins with the arrival of Theodoric Rood and the first learned and educational books that he printed, stretches back to the early thirteenth century when scribes, illuminators, and binders of books were already found in Oxford; but it was not until the seventeenth century that, at the initiative of two great men, Archbishop Laud and Bishop Fell, the University Press in its present form was established. It is the dark, dominant figure of John Fell, Dean of Christ Church, and then Bishop of Oxford, who emerges as the real founder of the University Press, and the man who determined the type of books which still preoccupy the Press: learned and educational books, and the Bible." Tiny soiling mark on top of text block, small shallow bump to top of both boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has old tape repairs at top/bottom inside of spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small surface paper loss on front panel, minor soiling.

7 Black, M.H. Foreword by Geoffrey Cass. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1584-1984.
Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1984 0521264731 / 9780521264730 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
343 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "In 1984 the Press celebrates four hundred years of continuous printing and publishing, and this history gives a readable and not-too-formal introduction to that unique record. It is the story of the development of the printing and publishing arm of the University of Cambridge, from the medieval system of resident stationers who dealt in manuscripts to the present large printing and publishing house which produces computer software and audio cassette tapes as well as books (mostly now computer-set). The narrative is given its proper setting in the development of the University, which has inevitably determined the history of the Press itself; in the history of the book trade as a whole; and in the intellectual and political history of England which has at times affected the fortunes of the Press. There are anecdotes about powerful personalities, from Richard Bentley to Stanley Morison, which give colour and life to the sober black-and-white history of printing and publishing." Previous owner's name label tipped-in on half-title page, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light browning on spine, small ghost sticker mark on rear flap.

RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE., Bull, Theodore, editor.
15 Bull, Theodore, editor. RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE.
Michael Joseph, London, 1967, first edition.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, fold-out map showing land apportionment in 1965. "The first and major portion of this book consists of a factual account of some of the more important political, social and economic developments in Britain's colony of Southern Rhodesia from the time of the first European occupation to the present day. It draws on historical records, official reports and government statements to explain what the Land Apportionment Act is, why it was introduced, and what its practical effects are; to examine local government, the educational systems, and economic development in urban and rural areas; to analyse the effect which some of the past and present legislation has on the living a n d working conditions of black and white Rhodesians; and, in the process, to illustrate the political attitudes of Europeans and Africans, and the separate development of the racial communities. (It) collates much of the kind of factual material w hi ch used to appear regularly in the Salisbury journal, the 'Central African Examiner', before it ceased publication. UDI and the censorship imposed under the Emergency regulations in November, 1965, resulted in the 'Examiner's' December issue bei ng heavily cut - about half the material submitted for censorship was banned. The journal's publishing company launched a court case to challenge the legality of censorship and so, by implication, of the Rhodesian regime, but this was unsuccessful and the December 1965 issue was therefore (its) last. The factual material in this book was prepared by former contributors to the 'Examiner' and edited by Theodore Bull, the sponsor and former editor of the journal. His own personal assessment o f Br itish policy on Rhodesia, before and since UDI, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock, forms the second part of the book. His conclusions are controversial, and readers of widely differing political views could be equally shocked by t hem, but they may stimulate a healthy reassessment of attitude towards the whole unhappy Rhodesian situation." Previous owner's place, date and signature on free front endpaper; slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrink ling, slight browning on spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good/Very Good-

"In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders."
