9 Armstrong, Keith, Editor. OUR VILLAGE: MEMORIES OF THE DURHAM MINING COMMUNITIES.
Seaham, Durham The People's History 2000 1902527321 / 9781902527321 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
128 pp, 9 7/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. " 'Our Village' reflects the pains and joys of the people of the Durham Coalfield during a period of drastic change. It is a selection from a series of community publications the author has been involved in over the last 20 years. The general idea behind all these projects has been to let the people speak for themselves in conversation and in their songs and poems. Mixed with over 130 vivid photographs of their local communities, what comes across is a passionate, and often agonising, account of the social upheaval County Durham has experienced. The memories, poems and photographs will interest and enthuse young and old alike. There is gloom aplenty but also wit and vitality in what people have to say. From the banks of the Derwent to the Weardale hills, from the beaches of Easington to proud Westoe, they tell their tales and laugh and cry." 10 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

PRO Publications, London, 1994.
189 pp, 4to (11 5/8" H), soft cover. ISBN1873162138 Color frontispiece, b&w illustrations. "For scholars of British diplomacy and international affairs, the records of the Foreign Office are an indispensible source. But the range of information and the sheer size of the records can be daunting to the first time user and to the increasing numbers of genealogists who attempt to trace individuals in the files of the diplomatic and consular correspondence. This book provides an introduction t o the records in all their variety and suggests appropriate classes to start with. It also examines the state papers foreign, the records of foreign policy which pre-date the modern Foreign Office records. These are more closely related to t h e l a t er papers than the dividing date of 1782 would suggest. This book also gives the would-be researcher practical guidance in using the registry systems created by the Foreign Office in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to locate sur vi vi ng pa p er s today." OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
13 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

18 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

VANISHING SCHOOLS, THREATENED COMMUNITIES: THE CONTESTED SCHOOLHOUSE IN MARITIME CANADA, 1850-2010., Bennett, Paul W.
19 Bennett, Paul W. VANISHING SCHOOLS, THREATENED COMMUNITIES: THE CONTESTED SCHOOLHOUSE IN MARITIME CANADA, 1850-2010.
Fernwood, Halifax, 2011.
190 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781552664018 B&w photographs. "Traditional schoolhouses and neighbourhood schools are disappearing at an alarming rate, making way for huge schools that serve multiple communities and adhere to the logic of moderni zation, centralization, and uniformity. In (this book, the author) explores the phenomenon of school closures, focusing on the little known and contentious history of public schooling in Maritime Canada from 1850 to the present. In a lively and s t imulating narrative, (he) examines the rise of common schooling from one-room schoolhouses that encouraged local democratic control through to 'super sized' schools governed by a vast bureaucracy that silences public participation. Local 'save ou r schools' movements do arise in cities, towns, and villages throughout the Maritimes but rarely succeed in slowing the unrelenting march of 'progress'. Bennett contends that, in both urban and rural Maritime Canada, closing schools rips out a soci al anchor vital to community survival and imperils the democratic ideals that originally guided the public school system. He shows that education is increasingly dominated by a bureaucratic state where the 'bigger is better' ideology and an impers ona l, unresponsive organizational apparatus drive the entire system. The book closes with a clarion call to completely reinvent public education to better serve the needs of our children and our communities." THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
20 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.
