445 pp, 8 3/16" H. "The apparent vulnerability of the Habsburg Empire at the time of Maria Theresa's accession destabilized the whole of Europe and, with Frederick the Great's invasion of Silesia, a cycle of violence was initiated that lasted for eight years and ravaged much of the continent. The vast conflict, which involved almost all the European powers and their empires, is the subject of (this book). (It) provides a highly readable narrative of a complex period that fundamentally shaped the European state system. The author explores the often changing war aims of the major belligerents - Austria, France, Great Britain, Prussia, Piedmont-Sardinia, and Spain - and links diplomatic and military events to the political and social context from which they arose." 416 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "The King, the Kaiser and the Tsar - George V, Wilhelm II and Nicholas II - were close cousins who knew each other as Georgie, Willy and Nicky. Between them they ruled half the world. Their lives had overlapped since childhood, in palaces of unimaginable opulence, surrounded by flattery and political intrigue. They saw themselves as a trade union of kings, standing firm against Socialism, Republicanism and revolution. But behind the friendliness lurked quarrels and, as the First World War loomed, they turned on each other. Ultimately, when Nicholas II begged for exile in the midst of Russia's revolution, his cousins denied him. This compelling tale of privilege, power and political machination explores whether their blunders caused the lead-up to war and the end of autocratic monarchy." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book is very slightly cocked, spine has light creases and is slightly concave.

5 Dominy, John. Foreword by Airey Neave. THE SERGEANT ESCAPERS.
Ian Allan, London, (1974), Ist edition.
136 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "Less well known (than stories of the Colditz and Stalag III escapers) but equally heroic were those of the large numbers of Royal Air Force NCO pilots, observers and air gunners who fell into German hands...A particularly notorius NCO camp was Heydekrug on the Baltic coast in what was East Prussia - the scene of one of the most remarkable POW exploits of the war. A tough, daring and resourceful escaper, Warrant Officer George Grimson, succeeded in establishing an escape route within Nazi Germany itself. Destined to be one of the great classic escape books, 'Sergeant Escapers' tells the story of George Grimson and his fellow NCOs and their attempt, successful and unsuccessful, to outwit their captors, frequently in conditions that made Colditz look like a rest camp. The author...was himself a POW and an eye-witness to the unfolding drama of the Grimson escape saga." Previous owner's bookplate on free front endpaper, minor edge wear to boards, spine has glossy finish, front and rear boards are matt with some overspray from spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, light rubbing, small closed tear on front hinge. VG-/VG-

KAISER BILL., Garrett, Richard.
7 Garrett, Richard. KAISER BILL.
Wayland, (Hove, 1978), first edition.
96 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, map. "Commonly blamed as the man who started World War I, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany is often seen as a tough aggressor; a man, as Bismarck might have said, 'of blood and iron'. As leader of the world's strongest army, he wielded great power. When, at the beginning of this century, he built up an almost equally strong navy, it seemed as if nothing could stop Germany's advances. But was he really the strong man of popular legend? Richard Garrett argues that, behind the stern appearance and the flamboyant moustache, Kaiser Bill was a failure. He believed that God had appointed him Emperor of Germany and that God would tell him what to do. His talent for making enemies was enormous. He had grown up as a spoilt child with a wide knowledge of many things and a deep understanding of almost nothing; and yet his arrogant faith in himself never faltered. This is the story of the effect of one man on thirty years of world history, culminating in a monstrous clash of arms and ending in the quietness of exile. Out of the story a picture of the real man emerges, and the events which led up to the disaster are put in to their true perspective. Was it the Kaiser, more than anyone else, who unwittingly prepared the way for Hitler? This book may suggest an answer." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, very light browning, small corner crease on front flap. VG+/VG

Nor has the cost to the Allies been forgotten. Unpublished letter-books at Blenheim have been drawn upon to show Marlborough's care for the wounded and their nursing. Finally the author traces Marlborough's triumphal return to London and the building of Blenheim Palace before taking the reader on a brief stroll through the battlefield as it is today." 10 Hamilton-williams, David. THE FALL OF NAPOLEON: THE FINAL BETRAYAL.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199852 / 9781860199851 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
352 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "This important study of the cause and effects of Napoleon's removal from power tracks the significant events in his illustrious career through to his downfall and, while doing so, charts the clandestine diplomatic intrigues linking Britain, Austria, Russia and Prussia in the quest for the Emperor's demise. Using substantial new research, (the author) questions many of the established views in Napoleonic literature to date. By disclosing hitherto secret terrorist organizations, uncovering the attempts to assassinate Napoleon, highlighting unbridled political duplicity, and demonstrating a host of previously misinterpreted signals and actions, he instigates a fresh assessment of the fall of Napoleon, new reasons to consider how much it was self-inflicted and how much it became inevitable given the combined forces - 'friend' and well as 'foe' - ranged against him. However great his military campaigns, how often he was victorious on the battle-field, Napoleon was destined to be deposed by political connivance and personal betrayal." MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH., Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.)
11 Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.) MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH.
London David Stott 1887 Hard Cover Good- Inscribed by editor.
458 pp + (1) pp publisher's advertising, 9" H. Tissue-covered sepiatone frontispiece. Inscribed on half title page: "For dearest Louisechen / from her devoted Sister / Helena (underlined with a flourish) / July. 1887. (underlined)". Helena Augusta Victoria was Queen Victoria's 5th child and married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming Princess Christian. The British Royal family were fond of German diminutives and the 'Louisechen' of the inscription could have been her younger sister, Louise Caroline Alberta, or her Prussian sister-in-law, wife of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was referred to as 'Louisechen' in family papers. The Duke served as Governor General of Canada in 1911 and 'Duchess of Connaught' has been pencilled above 'Louisechen' at some time. An interesting association copy. Some small splits to paper on inside hinges, a few pages with soft wrinkling at top corner, scattered light foxing marks on preliminary pages and on two rear pages, book is lightly cocked, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, small slight bump at board corners, age/dust darkening to edges of text block - especially to the top, rubbing and soiling to boards.

238 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1566197503 B&w illustrations. "(T)races the background and influences that shaped the character of the German soldier from the time of Frederick the Great to the end of the Second World War. ...Laffin provides an illuminating account of the attitude of the individual soldier to the increasing militarism of the years before the First World War. Included here are extracts from letters written by young German soldiers who, in spite o f t h e mud and carnage, regarded the war as a sacred mission that would bring honor and glory to their country. After Germany's defeat the Treaty of Versailles came as a blow to German pride and helped pave the way to the Second World War. P s yc ho l og y no w played a role in the German soldier's training, and emphasis was given to individual initiative - a concept wholly contrary to the old training that required strict obedience. But such preparation was no match for the Russian wi nt er of 19 42, a nd John Laffin's graphic account of that ill-fated campaign, culminating in the defeat at Stalingrad, pays tribute to German tenacity and resourcefulness." "(T)his book provides a continuous, chronological narrative, linking the theatres and showing how each affected the others, and the way in which the protagonists were forced to adjust the deployment of armies and resources between them. Each two-page spread describes and maps a particular phase in the conflict, linking its position in the order of events to previous and subsequent topics. Graphic keys supply at-a-glance locations in time and place, while a cursor bar shows the phase of the overall conflict. The maps have been designed to complement and amplify the chronological text, presenting not only the main events but also showing peripheral and incidental information to aid the reader in forming a clear picture of the course of the war. 350 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps/battle plans. "At breakfast on the morning of the battle of Waterloo, the Emperor Napoleon declared that the Duke of Wellington was a bad general, the British were bad soldiers and that France could not fail to win an easy victory. Forever afterwards, historians have accused him of gross overconfidence and massively underestimating the calibre of the British commander opposed to him. Andrew Roberts presents an original, highly revisionist view of the relationship between the two greatest captains of their age. The fascinating, constantly changing relationship between these two historical giants forms the basis of (his) compelling study in pride, rivalry, propaganda, nostalgia and posthumous revenge." Greenhill, London, 1999.
208 pp, folio (14 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In a stunning collection of full colour plates, this superb book captures the spirit of the Imperial Guard cavalry and their role in Napoleon's battles. It fully conveys the glory of soldiers of a military era surpassing the splendour of any other.---(B)rings together, for the very first time, ninety-one colour plates by the celebrated artist Lucien Rousselot. The plates, housed in the Anne S.K. Brown Miltiary Collection, illustrate Nap oleon's key Guard cavalry units: the Dragoons (25 plates), a regiment established in 1806; the Chasseurs (27 plates), formed from Napoleon's own personal bodyguard of 'Guides'; the Polish Light Horse (25 plates), the first foreign regiment to be p a r t of the Imperial Guard; and the Grenadiers (13 plates), the most feared of all the French army's regiments. In addition there is one vivid picture of Napoleon, wearing his favourite uniform - that of the Chasseurs (frontispiece). Carefully re se ar ched by the leading French exponent of the history of uniforms, Lucien Rousselot, from primary sources, including surviving uniforms and official documents, and brilliantly executed, these paintings are the very best of their type and supe r b e xam ple s of military art. Accompanying texts by Edward Ryan provide information on the regiments' uniforms, colourful Guard commanders and hard-fought battles, and an Introduction charts the origins and development of the Guard cavalry."
