For almost two centuries the knights of the Order of the Temple had flourished during the Crusades in Palestine and Syria, and in the West, notably in France. But in 1307, the Templars in France were arrested by King Philip IV's officials in the name of the Inquisition, their property seized and the men charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality, and idol worship. Confessions, extracted under torture, were brought before royal and papal tribunals, but in 1310 a number of Templar brothers mounted a defence of their Order, refuelling the controveries which cont inued for a further four years before the final executions. Malcolm Barber's fascinating account, assessing the charges brought against the Order, once again puts the Templars on trial." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownersh i p m a r k s . Osprey, London, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 11 7/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1855321513 Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "The 'son' of the Northrop YF-17 Cobra, the Hornet grew both in weight and capability after being ordered by the Navy to replace the vene rable Vought A-7 Corsair II. Now an integral part of the modern carrier air wing, the F/A-18 has dramatically increased the capabilities of fighter and attack squadrons already embarked aboard the Navy's 15-strong carrier fleet. Not all Hornet s s p otted in American skies are Navy property though, the 'flying leathernecks' of the US Marine Corps having received their first F/A-18s at virtually the same time as the 'blue water' force. Over a dozen USMC squadrons are now equipped with th e v er sa tile Hornet. Travelling further afield, Canada, Australia, Spain and South Korea have all chosen the F/A-18 to fulfill the fighter/attack requirements of their respective air forces past the year 2000. (This book) takes you aboard ship w it h a f ron tline Navy squadron as they patrol the barren expanses of the Atlantic, or takes you on a scrub skimming attack sortie over the parched wastelands of the 'outback' with the Royal Australian Air Force." "Universally acknowledged as representing the British national character, the Bulldog can trace its ancestry back to Roman times. With the prohibition on bullbaiting in the nineteenth century came a decline in the popularity of the Bulldog, almost to the point of extinction. The breed was kept alive by a few dedicated fanciers and has now adapted itself to domesticity and become an affec t i o n a t e companion and an ideal household pet. Whilst Bulldogs are far from vicious, they can display great courage in protecting their owners, families and property should the need arise. This detailed book traces the origins of the Bulldog a nd c om pa re s t he conformation of the Bulldog in the early years with today's standard. The author provides clear information on what to look for when choosing a puppy, care, management and breeding. There is also a section on holistic medi cin es for th e p rev en ti on and cure of common ailments and diseases. Readers will learn the correct way to show the dog, and gain useful insights into the world of judging. Packed with interesting and useful information for those thinking of buyi ng a pu ppy, or owne rs new and old, (this) is a must for all lovers of the breed." Pencorp, (London), [1991].
200 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color illustrations. "The story of Slough Estates is the unlikely tale of a group of businessmen who bought up the entire surplus stock of British army vehicles used in World War One and ended up as a powerful force in the nation's property development industry...(It) is also the story of a company that made a town. With a community of just 15,000 in 1918, the town of Slough today boasts a prosperous population of almost 100,000 with a density inextricably linked to a host which takes an extraordinary interest in its community welfare...The company could not have grown without the patronage of a good number of businesses down the years, many of which started their own corporate stories on the estate. Some, like No-Pe-Lo Potatoes and the O'Cedar Mop Co., have long since vanished but other have survived the roll call of business life, among them Mars, Flexello, Berlei, Aspro, Horlicks and Black and Decker. This is their story, too." Small light bump to top corners, small bump with closed tear/wrinkles/scuff at bottom edge of front board. THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690., Ellis, Peter Berresford.
12 Ellis, Peter Berresford. THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1976, first edition.
163 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, map. "In the year 1690 Ireland was the pivot of the European crisis. Louis XIV had sent over the deposed king James II with French money, troops and generals in order to secure Irelan d and eventually England as allies. William III, together with other members of the League of Augsburg, sought to prevent a Jacobite restoration in England and the consequent domination of Europe by France. On 1 July 1690, the decisive da y o f t h e battle of the Boyne, the presence of troops from the continent on both sides of the river emphasized the international issues at stake. But the battle was fought for other reasons which are still remembered today. The Cromwellian la nd o wn er s a nd t h e English and Scottish Protestants in Ulster wanted to defend their property and power; the Old English Catholics and the native Irish fought to regain their confiscated lands and to drive out the alien English conquerors. H ow fa r, in fa ct, di d W il liam and James represent these respective interests and what happened after such bitter fighting? Peter Berresford Ellis describes the movements of both armies prior to the battle and the scene of the battlefield itsel f. Wi th his ch arac teri stic im partiality he assesses the personalities and strategy of the various leaders - the Earl of Tyrconnell, the young Duke of Berwick and Patrick Sarsfield on the Jacobite side and the old Duke of Shomberg, the Count of Solm s-B raun fels and Gusta vus H amil ton on the Williamite side. For it was the foresight, skills or mistakes of such men which were to determine the outcome of the battle. Vivid eye-witness accounts of soldiers captured in both camps add f eel ing t o th is st ory o f hat red, h ope an d cou rage which captured the imagination of the generations to come. But the author does not merely ascertain the military significance of William's victory. He outlines the consequences of Williamit e ru le for both Catho lics a nd Pro testant s alike , in b oth Ulster and the South, and in so doing destroys - in surprising ways - some of the myths surrounding the battle of the Boyne." Yale University Press, New Haven, 2001, first edition.
492 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 030090625 B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he first history of what was once viewed as the heart of the American city. It tells the fascinating story of how downtown - and the way Americans thought about downtown - changed over time. By showing how businessmen and property owners worked to promote the well-being of downtown, even at the expense of other parts of the city, it also gives a riveting account of spatial politics in urban America. Drawing on a wide array of contemporary sources, (the author) brings downtown to life, first as 'the' business district, then as the central business district. His book vividly recreates the long-forgotten battles over subways an d skyscrapers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. And it provides a fresh, often startling perspective on elevated highways, parking bans, urban redevelopment, and other controversial issues. This groundbreaking book will b e a r e velation to scholars, city planners, policymakers, and general readers interested in American cities and American history." Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1976, book club edition.
320 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Almost as soon as the smoke had settled at Lexington and Concord, the American Revolution was being fought on the sea as well as on land. A fragile and disunited coalition of thirteen colonies, embarking on a war with a great naval power, began to build a navy for the 'preservation of the lives, liberty and property of the good people of these Colonies'. (This book) provides a vivid and authoritative history of h o w t h e new American nation set about its task. Americans have always been a sea-minded people, and even before the Declaration of Independence was signed, the Congress resolved to build a strong navy. The maritime skills of New England and th e ti m be r, p itch and turpentine of the colonies had made them a major resource for the British navy; this resource the Americans now turned toward their own ends. Fowler describes how a small group of delegates to Congress, led by John Adam s an d str on gly su ppo rted by Washington, labored to form a powerful fighting fleet. He describes the difficulty of enlisting men for the navy (they preferred to sail on privateers where they could reap rich rewards from capturing enemy vessel s) , th e jock eyi ng f or c omma nd by captains, the building of ships in shipyards all up and down the coast. The fledgling navy made some terrible blunders - most notably the disastrous Penobscot expedition which cost the Americans dearly - but it also en joyed mom ents of gr eat g lory, particularly under its greatest commander, John Paul Jones. Fowler describes both the failures and the successes, and he surveys the story not just of the navy itself but of the privateers and merchant s hip s tha t f ought along side it." Based on extensive research in neglected historical records and on hundreds of interviews from coast to coast, it documents the evolution of fifty schools across the country, sketches some of the famous (and infamous) headmasters and mistresses, and reveals the often unconventional beginnings of these Establishment establishments. No dry academic history, (it) concentrates on the people and the colour behind the grey walls: the milkman who became a headmaster by soliciting students on his rounds; the seven Anglican sisters who financed their school by selling used clothing; the school that acquired its property, an opulent nineteenth-century mansion, at a cut-rate price from a bankrupt social climber. 381 pp, 9 1/2" H. Tables, graphs. "(R)econstructs the social structure, life cycle, and domestic relations within a mid-nineteenth century Canadian city. (Katz's) analysis draws on the records of the entire population found on the manuscript census, assessment rolls, city directories, newspapers, and other sources. (He) has explored the relationships between inequality, ethnicity, sex, mobility, transiency, household structure, and coming-of-age during a period of profound social change. At one level, the book describes in great detail the nature of family and society in a commercial city. Simul-taneously, it uses the patterns uncovered in Hamilton, which the author compares to those other historians have found elsewhere, to speculate about broad questions in social history and social theory. Finally, the book is an exploratory exercise in the application of quantitative techniques to social history; as such its interest lies in its method as well as its substance. The author contents that two themes - structural rigidity and individual transiencey - characterized life in the commercial city. Despite the massive flow of people into and out of the city, its basic structures remained virtually unaltered, thought the identity of its occupants changed dramatically. In part, the history of the family reflected these two themes; but the family had an independent existence as well. For, despite some structural parallells, the family served somewhat different purposes than its modern counterpart, especially the sheltering of young people during a period Katz calls 'semi-autonomy', a phase of the life cycle that virtually has disappeared."
