11 Evans, Gary. THE PRINTS OF OAKVILLE: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY BACK IN TIME.
Burlington, Ontario North Shore 2003 189689920X / 9781896899206 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine Signed by Author
104 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 10 1/2" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. Signed by author on title page. "There is a lot of nostalgia within these pages. The photographs show a different sort of community as it has evolved over the years. There is a series of photographs taken on Colborne Street - better known today as Lakeshore Road - showing retail establishments long gone as well as other shots of historic houses, the harbors in transition, and Rebecca Street of long, long ago. A series of aerial photographs, some dating back more than 40 years, provide a different glimpse of Oakville, offering a unique perspective of the downtown core. Then marvel at the old schools, the Middle Road and the bustling community of Palermo, and even an antique car display at the Ford plant. As you leaf through these pages, an Oakville of another era will come alive, one rich in tradition, one as seen through the eyes of photographers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

12 Finley, Gerald. GEORGE HERIOT: POSTMASTER-PAINTER OF THE CANADAS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1983 0802055842 / 9780802055842 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good George Heriot.
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w reproductions. "George Heriot (1759-1839), a Scot, is best known as a skilled landscape watercolourist and as the contentious deputy postmaster general of British North America from 1800 to 1816. He was also a travel writer and a poet. In this volume, a combination of biography and art history, Gerald Finaly presents, for the first time, a rounded picture of Heriot, revealing his motives and ideals while also illuminating the texture of life in Canada during the early years of settlement. In describing Heriot's several roles as artist, administrator, patriot, spy, Fnley presents a portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman whose superficial desires were for an active public life but whose deeper yearnings were for a life of contemplation. This volume serves to recognize Heriot's artistic achievement and to accord him the place he deserves in the history of Canadian art and the country itself." Minor wrinkling at top of spine, three small faint stains on rear board.

Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside / City of Toronto 1983 0889027129 / 9780889027121 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.

Phoenix House, London, 1962, revised edition.
264 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Over 150 b&w illustrations (drawings and photographs) showing buildings, floor plans, architectural details. "....(studies the architecture of London and) beyond to Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire, a nd elsewhere up to a limit of forty miles to introduce and describe the fine houses, churches, abbeys, palaces, and other buildings deserving of public interest in some of the home counties. It could justly be claimed that no major buildi n g o f a r c h itectural merit from Norman to our own time is overlooked, and some of the greater glories of London's stone are the subject of concise yet comprehensive essays, Westminster Abbey, for example, and the peculiarly beautiful Eltham P al ac e , so su rp ri si ngly situated in what is now one of London's populous suburbs. But Mr Godfrey is far from a mere guide. His book brims with profound knowledge and an engaging enthusiasm. He understands that most of his readers are not v ers ed in t he t erm s a nd ref erences of architecture, and these are introduced one by one, and the wonders and excitements of the art of building are revealed in their various beauty. Architectural features and comparative styles, together with pla ns and de tai le d dr awin gs, are included in the 59 text figures, and there are 64 pages of plates containing 104 photographs and rare prints of buildings as they appeared in the past...." 20 Harper, Jennifer. CITY WORK AT COUNTRY PRICES: THE PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHS OF DUNCAN DONOVAN.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1977 195402758 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+ Very Good Duncan Donovan, photographer.
64 pp, 10 1/4" H. "In small communities throughout the western world, from the 1880s until the develop- ment of the hand-held camera in the twentieth century, the town portrait photographer was the chronicler of his time. Duncan Donovan (1857-1933) of Alexandria, Glengarry County, Ont., was typical. He portrayed the ceremonial events of life from birth to death, and the stages in between, for people who treasured such photographs and posed for them with a sense of being involved in a ritual. Choosing the most appealing of Donovan's photographs from the plates that have survived, (the author) has created a memorable album that offers a glimpse of Grandmother's World - the seven ages of man as lived in a small Ontario town and its environs in the early part of (the 20th) century. The photographs have been reproduced in duotone to capture the richness and distinction of the original prints. A brief historical introduction discusses Donovan's work and the significance of portrait photography in his professional lifetime which extended from the 1890s to 1924." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very small soft crease at bottom corner of rear cover. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing, light wear and small creases at top of spine.
