A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER., Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler.
5 Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler. A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER.
London Routledge for the Centre of Performance Research 1995 0415053080 / 9780415053082 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good+
272 pp, 11 5/8" H. "(S)ubtly juxtaposes the visual demonstrations of the performer's craft, from a wealth of Oriental and Occidental sources, to uncover knowledge of action in the heightened context of performance - from combat to religion and ritual. Whereas most Western research is concerned with naturalism and psychological realism in acting, the Dictionary focuses on the performer's arduous and eclectic craft. More than just a dictionary, however, it is a handbook for theatre practitioners and a guide for students and scholars of transcultural performance. It is a result of ten years' research conducted by Eugenio Barba and the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) based in Denmark. ISTA works with practitioners of theatre and dance from the major Oriental and Occidental traditions to study the underlying principles of the performer's technique. The Dictionary aims to expand our knowledge of the possibilities of the scenic body, and of the spectator's response to the dynamics of performance. (It) has practical sections on balance, opposition and montage, among other techniques, and discusses issues including 'The Text and the Stage', 'The Dilated Body', and 'Energetic Language'. The visual essay of photographs, drawings and diagrams which runs parallel to the text is skilfully constructed to complement the textual argument. The result is not only a lavishly illustrated sourcebook on Western and non-Western theatre - much of it until now little known - but an inspiring tribute to the secret art of the performer." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny dint on fore-edge of text block, old stock label on rear cover, minor rubbing.

HISTORY OF COLOR IN PAINTING. WITH NEW PRINCIPLES OF COLOR EXPRESSION., Birren, Faber.
6 Birren, Faber. HISTORY OF COLOR IN PAINTING. WITH NEW PRINCIPLES OF COLOR EXPRESSION.
Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, 1965, second printing.
372 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Faber Birren, the noted color authority, surveys the color theories of the past and analyzes the paletes and techniques of painters from the Renaissance to the present. Showing the relationship between color theory and practice, he sets forth a new art of color based on modern scientific research in human perception. The first part of the books traces the development of color theory, presenting the views of such thinkers as Leonardo da Vi nci, Newton, Goethe, Brewster, Hering, Chevreul, Rood, Ostwald, and Munsell. The palettes used by many of the great painters are described and listed in detail. Modern color theory and color effects based on human perception are fully expl a i n e d a n d illustrated. A unqiue chart of artists' color samples duplicates visually the palettes of da Vinci, El Greco, Rembrandt, Turner, the Impressionists, and the Abstract Impressionists, enabling the painter of today to match the color ef fe ct s of th es e painters. The second part offers a comprehensive history of painting as seen through the discerning eyes of a color specialist; it contains a wealth of reference material which supports the creative principles outlined in the fi rst se ct ion . T his book is richly illustrated with 32 handsome color plates showing great paintings and more than 500 black-and-white illustrations, including 80 reproductions of paintings depicting famous artists and their palettes." Th e tw o pa ge " Col or C ha rt o f Pi gments and Palettes" is complete. Small scuff to cloth on bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has four edge tears - two larger (one with creases) - all archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling, light rub bing. Ver y Goo d+/G ood

Portland Timber Press 2005 0881926116 / 9780881926118 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Errol D. Hooper Jr.
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Colour photographs, b&w drawings. "(T)he authors look at the structure, development, genetics, and reproduction of plants, the most prominent actors in garden ecosystems. They describe other garden organisms, focusing on those with the most influential roles - insects, nematodes, and microorganisms - as well as garden denizens ranging from microscopic prions to elephants. (They) explore nutrient cycles, sunlight, air, water, and the soil - the physical environment within which garden organisms live and function - and they consider the ways plants function in their environment and form communities. They then examine the intricate interactions among garden-dwelling organisms, ranging from the harmful to the beneficial. Once this groundwork is laid, they introduce humans into the garden ecosystem and consider how gardeners can use ecological principles to wisely manage their garden ecosystems. Throughout the book, the authors cite hundreds of examples drawn from personal experience and from the gardening and ecological literature. It becomes clear that gardens - whether a group of potted plants on a patio, a few beds carved out of a lawn, or extensive plantings over several acres - are indeed connected to the natural world in endless and important ways." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny dents on spine and hinges.

New York Twayne 1991 0805782672 / 9780805782677 1st Printing Hard Cover Fine Fine
175 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "In her unique study of the Babar milieu, Ann Meinzen Hildebrand looks at the de Brunhoffs' complete works, analyzing the thematic development of the stories and commenting on the essential role of the illustrations. Acknowledging the differences between the work of father and son, Hildebrand attributes the series' continuing popularity to the way in which both artists have created an elephant cosmos that is a mirror of a real and ideal life. She shows how de Brunhoff 'pere et fils' have eschewed simple 'animal fantasy' for fascinating characters who respond to everyday situations, both tragic and frivolous, thoughtfully and act on the principles of perseverance, patience, hope, and courage. Hildebrand's comprehensive study establishes the genius of the de Brunhoffs and explains how one kindly, nondidactic elephant in a derby hat has become such a socializing force for young readers.'

THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING., Hoff, Benjamin.

Weatherhill, New York, (1981), Ist edition.
86 pp, oblong 16mo (6 1/4" H x 9 1/8" D), hard cover (blue cloth with silver lettering on spine) in dust jacket. 16 color photographs. "These new and extremely creative versions (of the Tao Te Ching) by Benjamin Hoff, accompanied by an introduction to the basics of Taoist philosophy, bring the words of the sage to life once again. The Tao Te Ching, or Tao Virture Classic, concerns the working of Tao, the way or path to life in harmony with natural laws. The Tao Te Ching cautions us to seek wisdom rather than knowledge: 'Along the way to knowledge, many things are accumulated. Along the way to wisdom, many things are discarded'. In just this manner, Benjamin Hoff has succeeded in dispersing the mysteries surrounding this ancient text and in reducing the Taoist philosophy to a straightforward message, ever intriguing but no longer elusive. Such basic principles of Taoism as the uncarved block, the source, and the wu wei are given lucid definition. And in further accordance with the Taoist belief that words are an insufficient vehicle for conveying the meaning of Tao, sixteen color photographs are juxtaposed to selected passages, reflecting their essential truth..." 18 Hoffstein, Robert M. A MYSTICAL KEY TO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
Destiny, Rochester, Vermont, (1992).
187 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. "The English alphabet was originally intended as a means of instruction in the sacred 'word' of God. Robert Hoffstein explains that words are not arbitrarily chosen but constructed on ageless principles, an awarenes s of which allows us to communicate with more understanding and potency. Through his analysis of the vowels and consonants, the author demonstrates the meanings hidden in the basic sounds of English words. Pointing out that many English w o r d s a r e related to words and sounds from diverse places and peoples, Hoffstein argues that languages may be connected cross-culturally on the level of the collective unconscious. He shows how even the most ordinary words have within them ke ys t ha t c an b e d eciphered for a better understanding of our language and our lives. With an unusual blend of humor and insight, Hoffstein analyzes the true nature of the language we use, so that its deeper significance as an earthly agent of di vin e p ur po se is no t lost." ADMIRALS IN COLLISION., Hough, Richard.
19 Hough, Richard. ADMIRALS IN COLLISION.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1959, first edition.
174 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "On June 22nd, 1893, the British Mediterranean Fleet, the greatest naval fighting force and the most powerful weapon in the world, was on peacetime manoeuvres off Syria. The weather was fine, the sea calm, the eleven great ironclads were cruising in perfect formation at moderate speed. Then, at 3:31 p.m. the order was given from the flagship to bring the fleet, through a delicate and complex evolution, to its anchorage off Tripoli, barely three miles distant. The calamitous result of this signal was to strike horror throughout Europe and America, and to bring into disrepute the conduct, the principles of tactics and of discipline, and the fundamentals of w a r s h i p design, in the Royal Navy. The author has explored deeply into the causes of this strange and obscure catastrophe that created such outrage, but was never satisfactorily explained then, and ever since has been the subject of controv e rs y an d pr ej ud ice. The incident concerned two battleships, crack men-o'-war that were hardly safe even in peace; two admirals, strongly contrasting in temperament, intelligence and authority; and a series of fluttering flags that initiated t he ex tr aor di nar y e vol ution. Richard Hough believes that the answer to the enigma must lie in the characters of these admirals, Sir George Tryon, K.C.B., and Albert Hastings Markham; the one imperious, intimidating and self-confident; the ot her ear nes t an d w ell- inte ntio ned, but anxious and fretful. This account of their backgrounds and service careers, which sympathetically reveals their personalities (sometimes with pungent humour) makes a story which can be read as the dual biog raphi es o f men who appe ar as dest ined for explosive fusion. The events of that sultry summer afternoon....make fascinating reading for anyone interested in the sea,and in men's behaviour in crisis."
