LOGISTICS AND THE FAILURE OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN AMERICA, 1775-1783., Bowler, R. Arthur.
1 Bowler, R. Arthur. LOGISTICS AND THE FAILURE OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN AMERICA, 1775-1783.
Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, (1975).
290 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....draws on the remarkably complete records of the British government offices concerned with logistics during the Revolutionary War and army service departments such as commissary, quartermaster and barrackmaster generals to provide a full account of the everyday life of the British army and an accurate record of how logistical and administrative problems in America affected the course of the war. His study makes it clear that the British army in America depended almost entirely on Britain for supplies, and that for six years inadequate and sometimes corrupt administration seriously affected the course of operations and the morale of the troops. An organization capable of supplying the army was not developed until 1781, too late to change the outcome of the war." FROM RELIGION TO PHILOSOPHY: A STUDY IN THE ORIGINS OF WESTERN SPECULATION., Cornford, F.M. Foreword by Robert Ackerman.
3 Cornford, F.M. Foreword by Robert Ackerman. FROM RELIGION TO PHILOSOPHY: A STUDY IN THE ORIGINS OF WESTERN SPECULATION.
Princeton, New Jersey Princeton University Press 1991 0691020760 / 9780691020761 Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8 7/16" H. "In this exploration of the 'very first utterance of philosophers', F.M. Cornford showed that the remarkable burst of abstract speculation among pre-Socratic thinkers of the sixth century B.C. emerged directly from the religious thoughts of the preceding era in Greece. Combining profound classical scholarship with striking anthropological and sociological insight, Cornford rejected the post-Darwinian rationalist assumption that religion and philosophy are fundamentally different from each other. His book supplies a needed reminder of the intricate connections between critical scientific thought and social and emotional experience. Classicists, historians of religion, students of ancient history, and everyone concerned with the subject of myth will find this lucid and highly original work to be a source of rich insights about the organic nature and continuity of Western thought." KIEV: A PORTRAIT, 1800-1917., Hamm, Michael F.
4 Hamm, Michael F. KIEV: A PORTRAIT, 1800-1917.
Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, 1993, 3rd printing.
304 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 069103253X B&w map, photographs, reproductions. "Although Kiev remained an important religious, educational, and trade center after its destruction by the Mongols in 1240, it did not r ecover the splendor or significance it had enjoyed in earlier times. Even at the beginning of the nineteenth century, one visitor described Kiev as little more than three barely connected settlements - Podil, Pechersk, and High City - each 'v i l l a g e -like' in appearance. 'Kiev,' he asserted, 'could barely be called a city at all'. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, however, Kiev grew from a community of about twenty thousand inhabitants into a major metropolis of more th an s ix h un dred thousand people. Drawing on a wide variety of previously unexamined sources, (the author) tells the story of the city's transformation and renascence during these decades of exceptional growth. Although late-imperial Kiev be cam e a n i mpo rta nt center of Russian culture and authority, the city's population included thousands of Ukrainians, Poles, and Jews. Hamm vividly describes the character of Kiev's major ethnic groups, the conflicts among them, and the contribut ions of each to the cit y's history and culture. He addresses a variety of political issues - the attempts by local burghers to defend the autonomy granted them in medieval times, for example - but devotes particular attention to the development of Ki ev's revo luti onar y mo vement, the upheavals of 1905, and the city's pogroms. (He) also examines Kiev's recreational and artistic life and provides fascinating insights into what it was like to live in one of Imperial Russia's largest and most i mport ant ci ties. Princeton, New Jersey Princeton University Press 1992 0691019304 / 9780691019307 Soft Cover Very Good Photography by Praful C. Patel.
514 pp + 32 b&w plates at rear, 9" H. "One of the three great gods of Hinduism, Siva is a living god. The most sacred and most ancient book of India, The Rg Veda, evokes his presence in its hymns; Vedic myths, rituals, and even astronomy testify to his existence from the dawn of time. In a lively mediation on Siva - based on original Sanskrit texts, many translated here for the first time - Stella Kramrisch ponders the metaphysics, ontology, and myths of Siva from the Vedas and the Puranas. Who is Siva? Who is this god whose being comprises and transcends everything? From the dawn of creation, the Wild God, the Great Yogi, the sum of all opposites, has been guardian of the absolute. By retelling and interweaving the many myths that keep Siva alive in India today, Kramrisch reveals the paradoxes in Siva's nature and thus in the nature of consciousness itself." EINSTEIN WROTE BACK: MY LIFE IN PHYSICS., Moffat, John W.
10 Moffat, John W. EINSTEIN WROTE BACK: MY LIFE IN PHYSICS.
Thomas Allen, Toronto, 2010, first edition.
244 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9780887626159 "John W. Moffat was a poor student of math and science. That is, until he read Einstein's famous paper on general relativity. Realizing instantly that he had an unusual and unexplained aptitude for understanding the complex physics described in the paper, Moffat wrote a letter to Einstein that would change the course of his life. Einstein replied to Moffat and they exchanged a series of letters in which they discu ssed the theory of general relativity and Einstein's current work on unified field theory. Moffat met with Einstein's longtime colleague, the legendary Niels Bohr, at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. Astonished by the young man's self-taug h knowledge of theoretical physics, Bohr directed Moffat to Britain, where, after interviews with influential physicists including Erwin Schrodinger, he was enrolled in the graduate physics program at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1958, Moffat wa s the first student in the College's more than 400-year history to earn a physics PhD without a prior undergraduate degree. Moffat and Einstein did not continue their correspondence, as the great man died shortly after Moffat began his studies. Ho we ver, Moffat continued, over the next fifty years, to modify and expand on Einstein's theory of gravity. (This book) tells the story of Moffat's unusual entry into the world of academia and documents his career at the frontlines of twentieth-cent ury physics as he worked and associated with some of the greatest minds in scientific history. Taking readers inside the classrooms and minds of these 'giants' of modern science, Moffat affectionately exposes the foibles and eccentricities of thes e gr eat men, as they worked on the revolutionary ideas that, today, are the very foundation of modern physics and cosmology." University of Illinois Press, Urbana, 1966, second printing.
237 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This first book-length intellectual biography and assessment of the career of Edmund Wilson not only is revealing about one of our most eminent men of letters but also a contribution to our literary and cultural history....Literary critic, social reporter, travel writer, poet, playwright, short story writer, novelist, chronicler and historican - (Wilson) perhaps is the last of the great professionals, the genuine 'litterateurs'. Sherm an Paul traces Wilson's life, work, and role in the three cultural phases of recent American history: 1912-29, the 1930's, and the 1940's to the present time....Paul reveals what and who influenced Wilson and vice versa....He also extracts t h e e n d u ring themes from Wilson's works, such as his feeling for human motivation and the common good, his moral touchstone of decency, his psychological approach to history, his notion of creativity and the individual, and his long, but rec e nt ly b i tt er l ov e affair with the United States....Edmund Wilson is an important and interesting figure in our literary history. THE ART OF F. SCOTT FITZGERALD., Perosa, Sergio. Translated by Charles Matz and the author.
13 Perosa, Sergio. Translated by Charles Matz and the author. THE ART OF F. SCOTT FITZGERALD.
University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, 1969, second printing.
239 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This is the first critical study of F. Scott Fitzgerald based on his complete works from the Princeton juvenilia to 'The Last Tycoon'. In a work-by-work analysis, Sergio Perosa reveals the literary craftsman who through the conscious use of a Europeanized technique gave artistic form to the American experience. Fitzgerald's personal life - his early success at 23 and his failure by the age of 30 - has obscured his literary r e p u t a t i o n, making him more a legend than anything else. This book restores Fitzgerald to his rightful place in American literature. Perosa gives the date and circumstances of each composition, discusses the various texts, compares the pr ot ag on is ts , an al yz es the themes, and reveals the creative apparatus that made Fitzgerald great. (This book) presents a well-balanced appraisal of the writer who was the laureate of the Jazz Age. It discusses Fitzgerald's roots in both Amer ica n a nd Bri tis h lit era tur e and points out his contributions to the craft of fiction." THE ROAD OF LIFE AND DEATH: A RITUAL DRAMA OF THE AMERICAN INDIANS., Radin, Paul. Foreword by Mark van Doren. (Jasper Blowsnake.)
14 Radin, Paul. Foreword by Mark van Doren. (Jasper Blowsnake.) THE ROAD OF LIFE AND DEATH: A RITUAL DRAMA OF THE AMERICAN INDIANS.
Princeton, New Jersey Princeton University Press 1991 0691019169 / 9780691019161 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good+
345 pp, 9" H. "In this transcription of the Medicine Rite, the most sacred ritual of the now vanished Winnebago Indians, anthropologist Paul Radin captured a poetic source of profound importance to the understanding of mystical experience. Performed by medicine men upon the initiation of a member to their cult, this secret rite recapitulated the mythic origins and heroes of the Winnebago while integrating those present with the ancestral forces. The rite imparted not only knowledge about life, death, and rebirth within the community, but also insights into our potential, as human beings, of living with genuine dignity on this earth. (This book) offers an authentic rendering of these prayers and ceremonial procedures and guides readers in appreciating their rich symbolism. This text, recorded in 1908 through an interpreter, is the recollection of Jasper Blowsnake, a former medicine man hesitant to commit the once mortal sin of repeating the Medicine Rite. In the introduction Radin describes the events surrounding Blowsnake's recitation and sets the rite within its historical context. We learn that Winnebago medicine men attempted to find in the rite a refuge place for their tribe members, disoriented by their obsession with war and threatened with annihilation."
