Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1986 0771013396 / 9780771013393 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edgewear/wrinkling.

For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. NATIONAL REDEEMER: OWAIN GLYNDWR IN WELSH TRADITION., Henken, Elissa R.

Ithaca, New York Cornell University Press 1996 0801483492 / 9780801483493 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
250 pp, 8 1/2" H. "(C)ombines the tools of the historian and the folklorist to explore the development of a powerful, polysemous cultural symbol. Owain Glyndwer, called Owen Glendower by Shakespeare, led the last major armed rebellion of the Welsh against the English in the early fifteenth century. He has become an important symbol of modern Welsh nationalism. Beginning with a brief history of Glyndwr's life and times and a discussion of the traditional patterns of earlier Welsh heroes, Henken examines the roles Glyndwr played both in his own lifetime and in subsequent centuries. His primary role, Henken demonstrates, has been as national redeemer-hero, the leader whose coming is awaited so that he might restore the nation to its former glory. Glyndwr has also been cast as a trickster, outlaw, and military leader. Henken's interviews demonstrate that Glyndwr continues to be recognized today for his multifaceted identity as a national saviour. Through her analysis of the ways in which successive generations have reshaped Glyndwr's legend to serve their own needs, Henken provides a valuable case study in how any culture constantly rereads its past to maintain group identity and meet the challenges of the present." Interior - small soft crease at top corner of a few index pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

London David Stott 1887 Hard Cover Good- Inscribed by editor.
458 pp + (1) pp publisher's advertising, 9" H. Tissue-covered sepiatone frontispiece. Inscribed on half title page: "For dearest Louisechen / from her devoted Sister / Helena (underlined with a flourish) / July. 1887. (underlined)". Helena Augusta Victoria was Queen Victoria's 5th child and married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming Princess Christian. The British Royal family were fond of German diminutives and the 'Louisechen' of the inscription could have been her younger sister, Louise Caroline Alberta, or her Prussian sister-in-law, wife of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was referred to as 'Louisechen' in family papers. The Duke served as Governor General of Canada in 1911 and 'Duchess of Connaught' has been pencilled above 'Louisechen' at some time. An interesting association copy.
