SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700., Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna.
2 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

London Oxford University Press 1963 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Heather Standring.
195 pp, 7 7/8" H. Dust jacket art by William Stobbs. B&w illustrations. First printing in the Oxford Children's Library series - first published in 1870. "The seventeenth-century Civil War was a time of intrigues and divided loyalties in which, against her will, Rosamond Fane found herself taking part. Her own sympathies, like those of all the Fanes, were for the King, yet her guardian, Colonel Carewe, had just been appointed Commander of the Guard at St. James's Palace where the royal children were confined. The children were allowed to play with Rosamond and her cousins and she soon became a close friend of the unhappy Princess Elizabeth. Rosamond's loyalties were put to the test when her brother Henry arrived secretly in England with a plan to help the Duke of York to escape to the Continent - a plan in which Rosamond was required to play a leading part. Should she be disloyal to her uncle, who trusted her, or to the heir to the Throne? This was a question only Rosamond could answer - and her final decision was not an easy one." School presentation bookplate on half-title page, small light liquid mark on top of text block, tiny bump at top corners and on fore edge of boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

17 Lengel, Edward G. TO CONQUER HELL: THE MEUSE-ARGONNE, 1918.
New York Henry Holt 2008 0805079319 / 9780805079319 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
491 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "On September 26, 1918, more than one million American soldiers prepared to assault the German-held Meuse-Argonne region of France. Their commander, General John J. Pershing, believed in the superiority of American 'guts' over barbed wire, machine guns, massed artillery, and poison gas. In thirty-six hours, he said, the Doughboys would crack the German defenses and open the road to Berlin. Six weeks later, after savage fighting across swamps, forests, towns, and rugged hills, the battle finally ended with the signing of the armistice that concluded the First World War. The Meuse-Argonne had fallen, at the cost of more than 120,000 American casualties, including 26,000 dead. In the bloodiest battle the country had ever seen, an entire generation of young Americans had been transformed forever. 'To Conquer in Hell' is gripping in its accounts of combat, studded with portraits of remarkable soldiers like Pershing, Harry Truman, George Patton, Alvin York, Douglas MacArthur, and many other less well known soldiers, and authoritative in its presentation of the big picture. It is military history of the first rank and, incredibly, the first in-depth account of this fascinating and important battle." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing.
