2 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AFRICA AND AUSTRALASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 662.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
218 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers and decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "The extent of the land and sea that (this book) covers, between the extremes of Algiers and Samoa, is immense in latitude and longitude; while in points of history it ranges from the oldest to the newest civilisation; as suggested by Karnak, or the new capital of Australia, Canbena (sic). Moreover, in accord with the general idea of these map-books, the effect of the map in illustrating history, the growth and multiplicity of peoples and cities, and the vast possibilities of unworked regions, is kept in sight throughout these pages. The record includes the wars that have passed, from Napoleon's Campain in Egypt of 1798 and General Gordon's last stand at Khartoum, to the battles of Spion Kop and Colenso, and the sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking in the late South African War. It covers the routes of the great travellers, Mungo Park, Livingstone and Stanley; Stuart, Burke and Wills; and it touches at Vailima in order to recall Robert Louis Stevenson and his South Sea experiences, at the end of his days, as they are pictured by his Samoa book of 1892..." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of Africa and Australasia" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Africa and Australasia having a Literary or Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, minor edge wear - tiny tear at top of spine, minor bumps at bottom edge of front cover, book lightly cracked in several places - book is sound, small split and very small piece missing at bottom of inside rear gutter, slight scattered color loss on top of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, small tear at top of spine.

3 Bonsor, N.R.P. SOUTH ATLANTIC SEAWAY: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE PASSENGER LINES AND LINERS FROM EUROPE TO BRAZIL, URUGUAY AND ARGENTINA.
Jersey, Channel Islands Brookside Publications 1983 0905824067 / 9780905824062 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
525 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "(T)he first comprehensive book devoted to the passenger lines and liners running from Europe to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Seventy-one lines have been deemed to merit a chapter and fleet list, but it is a sad thought that only one of them, the Costa Line, is still running a multi-passenger service between the Old World and these countries of the New, and even their sailings are not very frequent. The reason, of course, is that the steamship and motorship have been eclipsed by the aeroplane. (This book) contains about 150 illustrations of ships, together with indexes of ships and lines, a chronological list of ship losses and a list of the largest ships (14,000 tons and over)." Light waviness to edges of text block, small slight bump at bottom corner of front board. Dust jacket has slight fading to spine color, minor edge wrinkling.

Greenhill, London, 1988, reprint.
355 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0947898875 Maps. "Whether among the first three to charge the French guns at Medellin, leading his troopers into the enemy ranks at Salamanca, or evolving order out of the chaos that bedevill ed the Portuguese Army in 1809, Sir Benjamin D'Urban was not only a brave and resolute soldier but also a painstaking and highly efficient Chief of Staff to Marshal Beresford. Finding, on arrival at Corunna in October 1808, that he had been a p p o i n t ed to that part of the Army left behind in Portugal, D'Urban set out to meet Sir John Moore in the hope of receiving fresh orders. This was the beginning of six years of unbroken service which included taking part in ten battles and s ie ge s. Af te r a short period as Staff Officer to Sir Robert Wilson, he was appointed Colonel and QMG to the Portuguese Army by Marshal Beresford in April 1809. The 'Journals' give a day to day summary of the Peninsular Campaign, which was found in val uab l e b y S ir Charles Oman, and provides a counter to what D'Urban considered unfair criticism of Beresford by Sir Charles Napier. Long out of print, this unique record of events fills a need for everyone interested in the campaigns of 1809 -181 5, p ar ticu larl y i n regard to the operations of the Right Wing of the Allied Army and of the part played by the Portuguese Army, which has not always received the credit due for some of its major exploits." 8 Glover, Michael. WELLINGTON'S PENINSULAR VICTORIES: BUSACO - SALAMANCA - VITORIA - NIVELLE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "In the course of the Peninsular War, Wellington became the most celebrated general in British history. When he landed in Lisbon in April 1809, however, there seemed little reason to suppose that the British could maintain their foothold in Portugal, still less to imagine that the French could be driven out of the Peninsula and across the Pyrenees. Since 1793 the British army had experienced a long succession of defeats and reverses. Before Wellington could take the field he had first to overhaul the entire organization of his forces. His allies' troops were ill-led, ill-trained and ill-equipped. His atttempts to co-operate with his Spanish colleagues were stultified by rivalry and distrust. Michael Glover has written a lucid narrative of the difficulties and set-backs of the five years' campaigning that brought the allies to Toulouse in April 1814. Against this background are full-scale accounts of the four battles - Busaco, Salamanca, Vitoria and the Nivelle - in which Wellington defeated his principal opponents of the War - Massena, Marmont, Jourdan and Soult. The officers and men who served in the Peninsula left behind them many absorbing and often moving eyewitness descriptions, and it is on these, no less than on his long acquaintance with the secondary sources of the history of the War, that (he) has based his study of the battles. The numerous illustrations, taken from the supreme period of military art, are themselves of outstanding interest and, with the six maps and plans in the text, complement a perceptive account of Wellington and his army." Light edge wear, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning to the spine and edges, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small edge tears.

A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813., Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover.
10 Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover. A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813.
Heinemann, London, (1979), first edition.
181 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w reproductions, maps, battle plans. "George Hennell, born about 1785 the son of a Coventry ribbon manufacturer and tradesman, joined Wellington's army in the Peninsula as a Volunteer, was commissioned in the field in the Forty-third Light Infantry, and served through the campaigns of 1812-13. Of his letters home twenty-six (all but two of them unpublished) survive, and these have been edited by the historian Michael Glover with a ge neral introduction, summaries of the events in the campaign covered by the letters, notes and appendices. The discovery of the letters represents a considerable find. Hennell is particularly good at conveying the detail of everyday life i n t h e f i e ld and camp and from his vivid pen the reader can gain a first-hand impression of what it was like to be a young officer on active service more than a century and a half ago. He is exceptional as a reporter because he not only rec ou nt s e ve nt s a s th ey happen but tries to analyse his own reactions to the dangers and horrors through which he is passing. He sometimes illustrated his letters with diagrams and fluent sketches, several of which are reproduced in this book . Hen ne ll' s s tor y beg in s d ramatically in the thick of the action when as a raw recruit armed only with a letter of introduction to General Picton he joins the British camp just two days before the bloody storming of the citadel of Badajoz. It end s w ith the vict or ious ar my d escending the Pyrenees to invade the soil of France shortly before the fall of Napoleon." 11 Horwood, Harold JOEY. THE LIFE AND POLITICAL TIMES OF JOEY SMALLWOOD.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722939 / 9780773722934 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
348 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he first complete portrait of Joey Smallwood - the most loved, feared and hated of Newfoundlanders who, through a singular will, not only changed his country's history but also held political power continuously, almost unchallenged, for twenty-one years and eight months. Smallwood was a man who, in his time, played many parts: a union organizer who became a strike breaker, a journalist who carried on a running battle with the press, a self-proclaimed socialist whose private friends included the right-wing premier of Quebec Maurice Duplessis, the Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar, and the most controversial president of the United States, Richard Nixon. He trusted no one and believed that the only way to get somewhere was to take the wheel himself. It was this singleness of mind and purpose that saw him through two bitter and hard-fought constitutional campaigns that would see Newfoundland enter Confederation as our tenth province. Horwood cuts through the hype and half-truths, the anecdotes and legend, to get at the man and his times." Very minor wrinkling at top of spine. SOUTH OF LISBON: WINTER TRAVELS IN SOUTHERN PORTUGAL., Huggett, Frank E.
12 Huggett, Frank E. SOUTH OF LISBON: WINTER TRAVELS IN SOUTHERN PORTUGAL.
Victor Gollancz, London, 1960, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Frank Hugget went to Portugal to see, to understand, and to interpret. He went first to the capital, Lisbon, and then journeyed down through the country to its most southerly province, Algarve....For several months he settled in the small town of Albufeira, and here, living with and getting to know the inhabitants, he explored and sought to isolate the national characteristics of the Portuguese....(From the beginning he became) conscious of the very endearing, if sometimes maddening, qualities of the Portuguese people - their politeness and charm, and a great kindness that comes before their own comfort, customs and conventions....He sees Portugal (in 1960) as a de sperately backward and impoverished land....He sees a society in which, as a corollary to poverty and caste, there is a fearful rigidity in the relationship between men and women. The frustrated lover, he says, might be the symbol of the P o r t u g u e s e - and since the passion of men is frustrated and can find its outlet only in marriage (which is manoeuvred and controlled by the matriarch and therefore conditioned by an older generation), the relationship between the sexes is ov er -i de al is ed , an d finally disappoints, sending the man back to his dreams and imprisoning the woman in the home. It is, he suggests, this frustrated idealism which lies at the root of that most national emotion, 'saudade', and inspires th e ' fad os' of Li sbo n a nd Co im bra....recalling the era of Portugal's greatness - when her seamen voyaged round the Cape (not then of 'good hope'), on to the far Indies and around the world, pioneering into the unknown with fantastic courage - Mr . Hu gget t fi nds the same gr eatn ess of spirit very much alive today: in, for instance, that unique complex of Portuguese feelings and attitudes known as 'loucura', which is 'more than vanity, more than bravery, more than recklessness, mor e tha n mad ness, alth ough it conta ins all t hese elements. It is a needlessly mad courage which tempts fate to destroy and introduces into some simple action a complicated danger'. Mr. Huggett analyses, in detail and with penetration, the na ture o f the Salaza r dict ators hip. ...the pro spect of an y revolutionary change of regime remains, in (the author's) opinion, remote. In addition to its value as a portrait of a little-known country and a really thoughful interpretation of its people , the book is also a very vivid and pe rsuas ive pi ece of writing: there are splendid descriptions of town and country, shore and sea." Andrew Melrose, London, (1956), Ist edition.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" h), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illus. "Sir Thomas Stucley was a rogue of the first order. Alleged to be the illegitimate son of Henry VIII, he persuaded Elizabeth to allow him to join an expedition to Florida. He n ever arrived. Instead, he stole the supplies and befriended the rebel Shane O'Neill in Ireland. This was only the first of many incidents in an adventurous career, in which he figured in almost every kind of treachery and desperate exploit. Stucley lived - and died - furiously. MISSION TO CHINA: MATTEO RICCI AND THE JESUIT ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST., Laven, Mary.
14 Laven, Mary. MISSION TO CHINA: MATTEO RICCI AND THE JESUIT ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST.
London Faber and Faber 2011 0571225179 / 9780571225170 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
279 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w maps, colour plates. "In the sixteenth century, the vast and sophisticated empire of China lay almost entirely unknown to Western travellers. As global trade expanded, this land of reputedly boundless wealth, pale-faced women, and indecipherable tongues begn to feed the fantasies of European merchants and adventurers. The Catholic Church, meanwhile, saw in this great people millions of souls who would be damned unless the Christian message could be brought to them. Mary Laven tells the extraordinary story of the first Jesuit mission to China. Confronting enormous challenges, the Italian priest Matteo Ricci and a handful of learned companions embarked on a journey into the heart of the Empire, the fabled Forbidden City. As they became intimate with a culture that was utterly alien and strangely familiar, they clung to a belief that reason, books and science would be their chief tools in the battle to win Chinese converts. Yet the story told (here) is much more than a war of ideas. The Jesuits waged their campaigns through the senses: the smell of incense, the taste of warm rice-wine, the sound of an out-of-tune harpsichord, the gleam of a Venetian prism. The history of religion has never been so sensuous." Coral Gables Univesity of Miami Press 1970 0870241435 / 9780870241437 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
134 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "The role of the Council was to govern the Holy Brotherhood, the kingdom-wide police force (of Renaissance Spain). The Council guided the colorful Brotherhood in pacifying Castile, and, while so doing, created a royal army for the conquest of Granada, the prototype of the great Spanish infantry that dominated Europe for centuries. The fact that Queen Isabella borrowed the money for Columbus' voyage from the treasury of the Brotherhood is an incidental, but not insignificant contribution to the Brotherhood in history. (The author) brings into question long-established theories concerning the social groups affected by the police and the extent to which the urban patriciate willingly cooperated with the crown in meeting Council demands. He documents reasons for believing that the Holy Brotherhood remained relatively more independent of royal control than had been previously assumed. He also provides a vivid description of the court, cities, and lawless countryside of fifteenth-century Castile." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper. THE LAST LINGUA FRANCA: ENGLISH UNTIL THE RETURN OF BABEL., Ostler, Nicholas.
18 Ostler, Nicholas. THE LAST LINGUA FRANCA: ENGLISH UNTIL THE RETURN OF BABEL.
New York Walker 2010 0802717713 / 9780802717719 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "English has become the world's lingua franca - the most widely spoken in human history, (but the author argues that it) stands to be displaced as the world's language. The primary causes for the spread of lingua francas over time have been military empire-building, networks of commercial enterprise, and missionary religion. Ostler explores each of these inspirations through the lens of civilizations spanning the globe, from China and India to Persia, Africa, and Europe. Two long-term trends emerge that suggest the reasons for ultimate decline: Elites are the prime users of lingua francas, yet democratization in politics and rising equality in society tend to bring them down. At present, international English worldwide is spoken not by majorities, but by elites; and the countries where English is spoken natively are losing their command of the world's economic heights. Soon, the rising wealth of states such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China will shrink any international preference for English. These trends are now reinforced by a new development in modern technology. There will soon be instant translation among major languages, enhancing the global usefulness of mother tongues and lessening the necessity for any future lingua franca to be learned. Increasingly, each nation will speak as it pleases, and yet the world will understand." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling light at bottom of front flap, tiny tear at bottom of front flap-fold - archivally taped.

Andre Deutsch, London, 1986, first edition.
150 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0233979603 B&w illustrations. "Although the Duke of Wellington's Peninsular War and Waterloo campaigns (1808-15) have been well documented by the great military historians, biographers and diarists of the period, many general readers are unaware that it was the custom of each regiment to be accompanied by a number of wives when it left England to go to war. Now Brigadier Page has unearthed a wealth of fascinating detail a b o u t t h ese dedicated women, who made a contribution to morale, and hence to victory, that has never before been fully acknowledged. In an elegant and lively style, he describes the selection process whereby wives drew 'To-Go' of 'Not-to-Go' t ic ke ts o u t of a hat, their life on the troopships and their semi-official role as cooks and washerwomen to the invading army. He also recounts the experiences of the large entourage of Spanish, Portuguese and French women who shared the suffe rin g a nd dan ge rs en dured by their English admirers until the fighting was over, and were very often abandoned when the troops returned home. Many of the women were faithful, courageous and hardworking, others flighty and lacking in discipline , bu t th ey all cop ed with incredible harship in order to keep their families together and to bring some light and comfort into the brutal lives of the fighting soldiers. (This book weaves) authentic historical detail in accounts of individual h erois m, tr age dy a nd c ome dy, a ll of which are tremendously engaging and very well told. Culled from diaries and memoirs of the men who fought in Wellington's campaigns, and enhanced by contemporary illustrations, these stories make a genuine contri bution to schol arshi p an d prov ide a lasting tribute to the women who followed the drum."
