NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
1 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

HOUSEKEEPING IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. (18th CENTURY.), Bayne-Powell, Rosamond.
4 Bayne-Powell, Rosamond. HOUSEKEEPING IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. (18th CENTURY.)
London John Murray 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
208 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Decorations, furniture, pictures, china, linen, the kitchen, food, drink, entertaining, washing, sanitation, heating, lighting, servants, illness, remedies, handicrafts, money, taxation and household superstitions and customs - all, so to speak, bring grist to the author's mill and the result is a graphic and convincing presentment of life in the period. The 'good old days' may have been enjoyable for those with plenty of money and good health, for the sick and poor much of life must have been horrible, the squalor behind the grandeur, the dirt underneath the cloth of gold - but how gracious and artistic the great houses were." Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear, several small and tiny edge chips, several cup-ring stains/impressions on front panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

With an emphasis on the human aspects of Kingston life, (it) is an expression of affection not just for the city and its environs, but for its populace over the generations. 8 Forbes, Ernest R. THE MARITIME RIGHTS MOVEMENT, 1919-1927: A STUDY IN CANADIAN REGIONALISM.
Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1979 0773503218 / 9780773503212 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
246 pp, 9 3/8" H. Dark blue boards with lighter blue and white lettering on spine and front board - no dust jacket (as issued). Map. "(T)he first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for 'Maritime Rights' which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. (T)races the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands, through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adroitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem." Light edge wear, tear at top of last index page archivally taped, light wrinkling on page leaf 123/124.

THE SKY SUSPENDED. THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Middleton, Drew.
13 Middleton, Drew. THE SKY SUSPENDED. THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
New York Longmans, Green 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
282 pp, 8 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers. "Here is a dramatic re-creation of England during those eventful days when Britain fought alone and when defeat of Britain would have been the defeat of hope. How close the batle was, how much hung in the balance and how that battle went is presented by the distinguished correspondent Drew Middleton who was reporting the events for the Associated Press. The forces at the command of the RAF - charged to defend the British Isles - were pitifully small in comparison to those of the German Luftwaffe, out to break the back of the English. An impartial military observer would have scoffed at the idea that so few would be able to do so much to so many. If the Luftwaffe had destroyed the RAF, there is no doubt that ultimately Britian would have fallen, little doubt that the history of the war and that of the world would have taken a different turning. How and why the tide of battle changed, what motives lay behind the German switch in tactics, what might have happened and came so close to happening - the story is superbly and dramatically told in (this) brilliant portrayal of a nation and a people battling for life." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few very small scuffs on spine.

JOHAN SCHRODER'S TRAVELS IN CANADA, 1863., Overland, Orm, editor.
15 Overland, Orm, editor. JOHAN SCHRODER'S TRAVELS IN CANADA, 1863.
Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1989 0773507183 / 9780773507180 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
168 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)he narrative of two months of travel during the summer of 1863 that took Johan Schroder, a Norwegian gentleman and farmer, through Upper and Lower Canada. Schroder's travels, undertaken with a view to publishing a guide for emigrants, brought Canada to the attention of the Norwegian people. Norwegian shipowners, many of whom were acting as carriers for the timber industry, quickly discovered that their return voyages to Canada could be more profitable if their ships were filled with immigrants instead of ballast. The time was ripe for interest in immigration to Canada when Schroder decided to embark on his tour. (He) was well received in his Canadian travels and managed in two months to see more of the country than most Canadians did in a lifetime. But, despite his warm welcome, he decided to settle in the United States and advised others to do the same. Schroder's account of Canada, which is now published for the first time in English translation, is the only narrative of travel in Upper and Lower Canada by a Scandinavian and one of the very few descriptions of pre-Confederation Canada written by a traveller from outside the English-speaking world. It not only gives us a view of Canada as it appeared to an educated Scandinavian but also sheds light on the reasons why most European emigrants who entered the port of Quebec eventually settled in the United States." Light edge wear, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flapf-folds, minor browning.

256 pp, folio (13/14" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1888054425 Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "As long as there have been storytellers, audiences have sought stories that make their flesh creep and their blood curdle - stories that slither into the darkest corners of our psyches. These are the tales that have been read furtively under covers or retold in whispers by the light of campfires. From Horace Walpole to Stephen King, the masters of horror have offered us jus t s u c h tales of the eerie and the spectral. Author Robert Weinberg has assembled the best of these phantasmal visions. Here is a vivid recounting of the writers, illustrators, publishers, actors, and filmmakers who for more than two centuries h a ve f ed o u r hunger for the macabre. As a student of the field whose collection of 25,000 genre-related materials is among the finest worldwide, Weinberg is a uniquely qualified writer whose perspectives span the spectrum of horror. (This boo k) be gin s w ith E nglish author Horace Walpole who, in 1765, gave birth to the Gothic novel 'The Castle of Otranto'. Mary Shelley plundered new depths of darkness with 'Frankenstein', and late nineteenth-century readers feasted voraciously on O sca r Wi lde' s 'T he P ict ure of Dorian Gray' and Henry James' 'The Turn of the Screw'. Washington Irving, Edgar Allen Poe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne each cast their unique spell on tales of the weird. As the modern era unfolded, horror has c rept, how led, and s limed its way into the twentieth century on celluloid and paper, and Weinberg reveiws the silents and talkies, the comics, the paperbacks, and hardcovers - including such haunting and immortal creations as Frankenstein, Dracul a, and 'The Phan tom of the O pera' ."
