4 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

NOTHING MORE TO DECLARE., Holmes, John Clellon.
11 Holmes, John Clellon. NOTHING MORE TO DECLARE.
Andre Deutsch, 1968, first U.K. edition.
253 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....an account of living and writing by one of the Beat generation, a friend of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and others less famous but no less interesting and significant - and it makes nonsense of the game of 'generationing' by speaking to everyone, anywhere. It begins with four intimate portraits: Ginseberg, Kerouac, Gershon Legman and Jay Landesman, whom John Clellon Holmes met in his early twenties and recognized at once as people he wanted to know well. It was not long before they had all been labelled 'the Beats', but a label is only what the outsider sees. Here we are shown the living reality to which it was attached and are told what it felt like to wear it - and to peel i t off, which is what, as he approached his forties, Mr Holmes discovered that he had done. He is without pomposity and doesn't tell us what we expect to read. He remebers what it was like to sigh after Carole Lombard and to long to be Hum p h r e y B o g art, as well as what it was like to learn how to write. He remembers what his friends brought home from the grocer as well as what they said about communism and sexual freedom. Summing up the sexual revolution, he digs into the ex pe ri en ce o f l iv in g it and makes generalisations seem empty. Pondering on Kennedy's assassination he produces from his personal reaction an interpretation of Oswald so preceptive that it jolts. And assessing the nature of a writer's life a nd the ro le of sp oke sma n, he comes quickly to the conclusion that 'fame, ambition, ego - more and more they seem like husks to me, sad husks housing frightened twitter'. Having made his declaration at the frontier of middle age, he is ready to go his own wa y f or his own rea sons, a wise man and an impressive writer...." Minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-fold areas, light rubbing , mi nor b rowni ng. THE ART OF CLAIRTONE: THE MAKING OF A DESIGN ICON 1958-1971., Munk, Nina and Gotlieb, Rachel. Foreword by Samantha Sannella.
15 Munk, Nina and Gotlieb, Rachel. Foreword by Samantha Sannella. THE ART OF CLAIRTONE: THE MAKING OF A DESIGN ICON 1958-1971.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart / Design Exchange 2008 0771065078 / 9780771065071 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
171 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 1/4" D). "For a decade, in the 1960s, Clairtone Sound Corporation captured the spirit of the times: sophisticated, cosmopolitan, liberated. From its modern oiled-walnut and teak stereos to its minimalist logos and promotional materials, Clairtone produced a powerful and enduring body of design work. Founded in 1958 by two young Canadians, Peter Munk and David Gilmour, Clairtone quickly became known for its iconic designs and masterful advertising campaigns. Its acclaimed Project G stereo, with its space-age styling, epitomized the Swinging Sixties. Famously, Hugh Hefner owned a Project G. So did Frank Sinatra. Oscar Peterson affirmed that his music sounded as good on a G as it did live. In 1967, suggesting how deeply Clairtone's G series had come to be identified with popular culture, the G2 appeared in 'The Graduate' with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. With 250 illustrations, including previously unpublished drawings, rare film stills, confidential memoradums, and original photography, (this) is a candid and in-depth look at the company's skyrocketing success - and sensational collapse. Through the recollections of those who knew Claritone best, from its founders to its designers, engineers, and salesmen, and with comments from Karim Rashid, Douglas Coupland, Tyler Brule, and Bruce Mau, among others, this elegant book, published on the 50th anniversary of Clairtone's launch, celebrates an iconoclastic company that once seemed to represent the promise of Canada." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel, soft wrinkling at top of rear flap and at top of front panel.

254 pp, 9 1/4" H. "From Canada's most outspoken novelist and essayist comes a broadside of outrageous remarks, irreverent wisdom and wickedly accurate criticism. Whether surveying the international literary scene or considering the excesses of pop psychology, Mordecai Richler attacks his diverse subjects with relish and devastating wit. We learn about Richler's opinions on everything from movieland to conspiracy theories, from reincarnation to orgies, and from political wives to male impotence in 14th century France. But there is another side to Richler - a kinder, gentler man who celebrates marriage and friendship, fatherhood and harmony. In a mellow mood, Richler meditates on the joys of reading, the power of fiction, and the great rewards of a profession in writing." Very minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. New motorcycles such a s the BSA Gold Star singles and Star twins, Norton Dominator, Royal Enfield Meteor and Constellation, Triumph Tiger 110 and Thunderbird and Velocette Venom created a new breed of enthusiast, while films such as Marlon Brando's 'The Wild One' expressed, albeit in somewhat extreme form, the biker-as-rebel philosophy. Add to this the potency of that biggest of all pop music phenomena, rock'n'roll, an increasing affluence and the mushrooming 'youth culture', and the ingredients were all in place. Famed motorcycle author Mick Walker provides a fascinating re-creation of the era, packed with period photos of the machines and their riders, with information on technical and design features, clothing and accessories, and the cafe racer lifestyle which aroused fervent enthusiasm and stern disapproval in equal measure.
