Suffering from exhaustion and on the verge of collapse, he found a hot spring that provided him with temporary warmth and ins ects to ea t. 6 Spade, Rupert, introduction and notes. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa. RICHARD NEUTRA.
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1971, first American edition.
136 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour photographs, floor plans. "The reputation of Richard Neutra (1892-1970) is founded on his finely executed and superbly landscaped domestic buildings. Born and educated in Vi enna, where he was influenced by the leading European architects, notably Adolph Loos, Neutra developed the intense dislike of ornament that was to characterize his work. He emigrated to the United States in 1923 and in 1926 established a pract i c e in California where the majority of his buildings are to be found. His highly individual style is characterized by the adoption of plate glass for exterior walls, combined with overhanging eaves, outrigged columns and integrated pools, and b y th e e xploitation of the subtropical California vegetation to create privacy." Slight browning to edges of textblock, two very small light stains on bottom of text block, tiny light foxing marks on top of text block, slight waviness at top edge of pi ct ur e pages. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine and along top edge, light edge wrinkling along top edge, tiny hole at top of front flap-fold, light rubbing, small corner crease on front flap.
