1 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
2 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. Saw action in the First World War, on through the balmy years between the Wars, mainly in India, and then to fight in North Africa during the Second World War. Eventually, invalided out of the Army due to wounds sustained in Eritrea. These are the reminiscences of a Cavalry Officer of probably the most famous Indian Cavalry Regiment. As a third year medical s tudent he went on a summer's adventure to an unheard of hospital in the equally obscure town of Twillingate in Newfoundland, at that time Great Britain's oldest colony. The summer's experience was offered to Hopkins students, as an elective, to s h o w them medicine as practiced outside the metropolitan centers. It also gave them more hands-on experience than medical school could offer to a junior student. Most came for the summer and then relegated to memory their novel experience with th e ho spitable, gentle people, the chance to do deliveries and appendectomies, and the rustic maritime beauty of the place. (John Olds) liked it so well that upon graduation in 1932 he returned, bringing (his wife), whom he had met there in 1930 as a Hop kins nursing student. They decided to stay a year; the year turned into their lifetimes." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Salisbury, Wiltshire Michael Russell 1981 0859550826 / 9780859550826 Second Impression. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, drawings, family tree on endpapers. "This is a good book about children, and a wonderful book about rich children. Though it was conceived originally only for private distribution, it would have been a shame had the matter ended there. The author's upbringing - she is a granddaughter of the first Lord Cowdray - suffered from very few limitations of budget, but she was, by her own account, a shy and pessimistic child (imagine the frustrations of being a pessimist about the Pearsons!) who viewed with dismay some of the side effects of her good fortune. (This) is a sympathetic, funny, unreproachful book, a bonanza for the social historian, and written with a real feeling for the essence of childhood." Book is slightly cocked, minor bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light wear at top of spine, minor rubbing.
