All of the key people in his life - family, friends, enemies - are waiting expectantly. He walks to the lectern, pours a glass of water, drinks, and collapses. Within seconds, he is dead. Joanne Kilbourn, Andy's speechwriter, is stunned, but she is no stranger to sudden death. In the hours after Andy's murder, she relives the anguish she felt years earlier when her husband was brutally killed by a complete stranger. As Joanne begins to delve into Andy Boychuk's past, she unexpectedly enters a world of concealed passions and sexual intrigue. Then someone decides to stop her. By her own assessment, Joanne is an ordinary Canadian woman - and that is her strength. She works hard, has a wry sense of humour and leads the hectic life of a single mother. Although tough minded enough to make her way in the cutthroat world of provincial politics, she is not by nature a risk-taker or an adventurer. But when she sees her world threatened by chaos and violence, she decides to take action to restore order and a measure of decency." Dust jacket has minor edgewear/wrinkling, light rubbing.

London Viking 1996 0670858714 / 9780670858712 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). "The great architect and his architecture are well known, but what about his patrons, his clients? Who were they? Why did they build? What did they pay for their buildings? From his earliest patrons, a stream of repressed gentlewomen of intelligence and means, through a galaxy of Edwardian heroes and villains, this book tells their stories. Some of them are famous, others unknown, except as Lutyen's clients: here are Herbert Jekyll, Jennie Churchill, J.M. Barrie, Hugh Lane, Victoria Sackville, lords, ladies, Souls, bankers, press barons, politicians, the beau monde of Edwardian England, as well as a schoolteacher who inherited a fortune and a prospering Bradford wool merchant. The complex networking of families and friends threads through the events and settings of Edwardian society, like a richly patterned embroidery. Everything of significance that Lutyens did had its roots in the Edwardian decade - and his clients turn out to be both the triumph and the tragedy of his career. (L)avishly illustrated with the human face of great architecture - sketches, drawings and photographs from family archives all over England." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, slight browning to spine, edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

It retains a close fidelity to known facts ab out the life of one of the finest generals the world has ever known, but it reads like an historical novel....This book recreates the amazing life and times of this military genius, charismatic leader, astute manager of resources, efficien t p u b l i c a dministrator, and great champion of democracy. Most of what we know about Hannibal was written by his enemies over 2,000 years ago. Their writings show a grudging admiration for the brilliant Hannibal, but they are written from t he Ro ma n pe rs pe c ti ve, with the prejudices of his bitter enemies. 'Hannibal's Lieutenant' interprets the fascinating facts and situations as Hannibal and his supporters would have seen them, with their own prejudices. Once war was declared by h is gov er nme nt, Ha nn iba l became a victim of political gridlock and inaction by politicians of the Carthaginian government in Africa. Political enemies in Carthage, more than the Roman soldiers in Italy, were responsible for his failure t o d ef eat Rom e.. ..Ha nnib al c ome s al ive as the story follows his life: from his early years to commanding general of Carthaginian forces in Spain at age 25; from climbing the hazardous Alps with his army and elephants to invade Italy at age 26 t o f ight ing R oman s in Italy for 16 y ears with no major defeats; through public adminstrator in Carthage for seven years after the war, where he reformed the government by eliminating graft and corruption and changed it from rule by a privi leged few to t he mos t dem ocrat ic gov ernme nt in the Hellenistic world; from military consultant of the king of Syria in Ephesus where he accompanied the king during Syria's invasion of Greece and later led a fleet of warships in a sea battle to hi s ref uge on the is land o f Cret e; thro ugh hi s stin t as consultant to the king of Bithynia after fleeing Crete; and finally to his suicide at age 64 in 183 B.C." THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
15 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
Coward-McCann, New York, 1963, first American edition.
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, c ourtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brillian t c o m e d i e s of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new an d c om pl ic at ed d ev ices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of for ge ry an d e mbe zzl eme nt. H e became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mist res s, Mada me d u Ba rry. Th e ne xt K ing, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late K ing whi ch we re of expl osive impo rtanc e, in volved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais al lied him self w ith th e caus e of t he Ame rican coloni es; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, Beaumarchais organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, h is pl ay 'T he Barb er of S eville' had be en accl aimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the b an was reluc tantly l ifted, a ll Paris fought to see i t. Wh en the R evolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a fr iend's house. Later he was arre sted, rel eased th rough inf luence of a woma n, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint fo xing ma rks on free endpa pers, ligh t wrinklin g at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxint marks at edges of illustration pages. Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.
