2 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY., Armitage, Michael.
3 Armitage, Michael. THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
London Brockhampton 1996 1860198511 / 9781860198519 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
288 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps. "Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps, the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed the tactics and weap- onry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300,000 personnel and 23,000 aircraft, but there was the immediate threat of stringent post-war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The Chief of Air Staff, Trenchard, needed a successful example of the potential of air power in order to guarantee future funding, and it came in the RAF air-policing role in the Near East. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years', despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearm-ament in both aircraft and ground forces, the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes one third of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout the Second World War, acknowledging the problems in command, strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces. Chapters cover the lean years from 1940 to 1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts, through the gradual build-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final, comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-1945 mark the high point of RAF history, but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft, the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from 'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force, the slow decline in British research and development, the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. The history of the RAF is fully detailed up to the present as one receding threat causes significant change in the number and type of aircraft needed to face the perceived new problems posed by developing nations." Tiny scuff on bottom of rear board. Dust jacket has minor wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny edge tear, very small dint on rear hinge, two tiny dints on rear panel, minor rubbing.

Rockbridge, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1999, first edition.
378 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1883522153 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union 's Army of the Potomac is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennyslvania Voluntee r I n fantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed. The tale also includes a vivid, firsthand description of the brutal history of the 129th a nd th e Tyler Brigade and poignant stories of its men - Frederick B Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstrong's point of view - A masterpiece of historic sl eut h ing a nd disciplined research, this volume may change the way some historians view General Humphreys." What are the implications of such a relationsh ip with sacred beings for the religious life of a community? Using these questions as his point of departure, Babb explores the ritual culture of image-worshiping Svetambar Jains. The biographies reveal the early communities of the bay and the escarpment from early settlement, through war and rebellion to the emerging community of the mid and late ni n e t e e n t h century. The figures included represent a broad cross-section of life: politicians, clergy, merchants, settlers, actors, artists, and even criminals. Oxford University Press / Institute of Race Relations, London, 1967, first edition.
338 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "As a result of the dramatic Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Ian Smith and his Cabinet in November 1965, Rhodesia is now the centre of an international crisis, a focal point in a rapidly changing scene. But the act should not be seen as an isolated incident; it is part of a political and constitutional pattern which has developed gradually, and of which the outstanding feature is the division between Europeans and Africans. In thi s careful and thorough study Mr. Barber traces the various strands which make up this pattern, analysing the origins of this tragically divided society and its relations with the rest of Southern Africa, and giving a detailed account of the politi c a l developments since 1960 which culminated in the U.D.I." "The Battle of the Hook was probably the last full-scale infantry battle, fought on traditional lines, that the world will ever see. It was also a classic set-piece example of a battalion in defence and was, in terms of steel, the biggest battle of the Korean War, and the most concentrated confrontation of artillery support and engineering effort since the First World War. In it the Black Watch and t he Duke of Wellington's Regiment defeated and completely routed a fanatical Chinese army who attacked them over a period of some fifteen days with incredible ferocity. The Chinese losses were so great that they never attempted such assaul t s a g a i n . It was a turning point of the Korean War and a triumph of British arms...." THE DESERT GENERALS., Barnett, Correlli.
13 Barnett, Correlli. THE DESERT GENERALS.
William Kimber, London, 1960, second edition.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The first portrait is of Sir Richard O'Connor, who won the fantastic victories over Graziani's Italians in 1940. The author shows that th e credit for the daring and unorthodox planning is due to O'Connor and not to Wavell; he puts forward a convincing argument to show that Tripoli could have been taken - and the North African campaign ended - in February, 1941, if the Prime Mi n i s t e r had not diverted forces to Greece. Of Sir Alan Cunningham, first commander of 8th Army, there is a picture of imaginative insight. The author shows that the crisis in the 'Crusader' battle of November, 1941, was caused by twenty years o f ne gl ec t a nd traditionalism, although the brunt fell on Cunningham, then a sick man. In Sir Neil Ritchie, next 8th Army commander, the author sees personified the characteristics of the Establishment - rigidity, social charm and professiona l c on ser vat ism . H e shows how Ritchie was beaten in the summer battles of 1942 by the dynamism of German leadership. With 8th Army in danger of complete collapse, the C.-in-C., Sir Claude Auchinleck, took over direct command in order to try t o sa ve the Midd le E as t a nd its vital oil. In the next few weeks he won a great but never officially acknowledged victory in the First Battle of Alamein. The author believes that this was the true turning point of the war, making possible the ' Torch ' l andi ngs i n Fre nch Nor th Africa. Auchinleck's reward was dismissal - as, the author shows, a political scapegoat. Although Field-Marshal Montgomery has recounted his own story, there is another side to it, told here for the first tim e. Th e au thor discus ses th e pl ans f or Montgomery's first victory of Alam Halfa which had been made by Auchinleck and his officers; he submits that the Battle of Alamein was not impeccably handled, and that Rommel's escape afterwards was not o wing to rain , but to the hesita nt, ' broad front' pursuit - the very error of which Montgomery was to accuse Eisenhower in 1944." London J.M. Dent & Sons 1930 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Good Very Good
242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass.
