2 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Jonathan Cape 1994 0224035258 / 9780224035255 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
337 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "At thirty-seven, Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg, Chief of Staff of the Reich Reserve Army, was a charismatic figure destined for supreme command. The group of conspirators with whom he conceived the plot to kill Hitler in July 1944 was called 'Secret Germany'. That was also the name of the esoteric circle in which Stauffenberg as a young man had been a disciple of the mystic anti-Nazi magus and poet Stefan George. What was it that motivated this extraordinary aristocratic soldier, with the looks of a Hollywood idol, who was said to be only man to stare the Fuhrer down until he averted his eyes? For Stauffenberg the bomb plot was not a political move but a moral and spiritual necessity. After forty-two serious attempts on Hitler's life in the previous twenty years, why did he too fail? Had he succeeded, some say he would have become the de Gaulle of Germany, saviour of the national soul. Even in failure, there can be no doubt of Stauffenberg's heroism. He stands as an atonement for the Third Reich and a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In this remarkable investigation his whole life explains a troubled past to the present generation of Europeans as few have done in recent history." Tiny crease at bottom corner of pages 83 to 100. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny dint on rear hinge, very light rubbing .

THE CREST OF THE BROKEN WAVE: A NOVEL OF THE LIFE AND LOVES OF ROBERT BURNS. (VOLUME 4 OF "THE IMMORTAL MEMORY" SERIES.), Barke, James.
3 Barke, James. THE CREST OF THE BROKEN WAVE: A NOVEL OF THE LIFE AND LOVES OF ROBERT BURNS. (VOLUME 4 OF "THE IMMORTAL MEMORY" SERIES.)
Collins, London, 1953, 1st edition.
320 pp, small 8vo (7 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "....gives a vivid picture of Robert Burns at the height of his creative powers, acclaimed as Scotland's national bard and yet bitterly aware of the empty glory of that fame so far as any worth-while improvement in his immediate prospects are concerned. He has left the scene of his brief triumph in the Edinburgh drawing-rooms. He is a farmer again, trying to wrest a living from the grudging soil of Ellisland . . . H e h a s very much on his mind the cares of a wife and family, for whom he is determined to make a home. Through these pages the sterling worth of Jean Armour shines like a star. Bonnie Jean has hitherto had scant justice paid to her by b io gr ap he rs . He re her character is limned with admiration and affection. One understands the strength of the bond between her and Burns, and how it could withstand the devastating impact of Burns's infatuation for Anna Park, the golden-haire d H ebe of th e G lo b e T ave rn in Dumfries....But the story is concerned too with Burns's intellectual development, not only as a poet but as a thinker peculiarly sensitive to the fresh political breezes that are blowing in so strongly from Fra nce. ...T he b ook ends wi th the aba ndonment of the farm and of the life he had known since boyhood, the never-ending struggle with the land; already the shadow of his last tragic years in Dumfies lies darkly across his path...." BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE., Castronovo, David.
5 Castronovo, David. BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE.
Continuum, New York, 2009.
197 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9780826428325 "They came from unpromising places and unglamorous backgrounds. They crashed the Establishment party in one generation, raided the citadels of culture, and brought their idioms, themes, and passions to the center of British life. The blokes were writers who revitalized British drama, fiction, poetry, and criticism. This book is the story, told in a series of profiles, of New Britannia. The cast of characters includes playwrights John Osborne and Arnold Wesker, novelist Kingsley Amis, critic Kenneth Tynan, poet Philip Larkin, fiction writer Alan Sillitoe, plus lesser-known figures such as John Braine, David Storey, Stan Barstow, and Keith Waterhouse - up to more contemporary writers like Martin Amis and Nick Hornby. The central idea of this book is how these writers, and others, transformed British heritage - how they worked with the materials of their own backgrounds, the class system, tradition, and artistic convention to make new art. They took their place in a long line of writers who thrived on grit: Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence. (It) is an entertaining and insightful survey of a group of disparate writers who had a profound and enduring impact upon British literary culture." MILLAY IN GREENWICH VILLAGE., Cheney, Anne.
6 Cheney, Anne. MILLAY IN GREENWICH VILLAGE.
University of Alabama Press, Alabama, 1975.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0817371613 B&w illustrations. "It was Millay who captured in verse the freedom, spontaneity, quick wit, and beauty of the pre-1920s as no other poet did. She was a living symbol of the 'new woman' who could live, think, and love as freely as they chose. (This) is a psychological portrait of Millay in her finest years, the ones after she had freed herself of the repression of her childhood and youth and before she accepted th e b o n d s o f a stifling marriage. The four most important influences on Millay's life and art - Floyd Dell, Edmund Wilson, Arthur Davison Ficke, and Eugen Boissevain - are discussed at length in individual chapters. A separate chapter deals b ri e fl y wi th h e r less significant relationships. Dr. Cheney's fascinating study reveals that Millay's concern with and involvement in anti-war protests, women's rights, social injustice, lesbianism, and individual freedom make her not only a rep re sen ta tiv e w oma n of her own time, but very much a woman for our time, too." Faint cigarette odor, minor browning to pages, light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very light browning to fore -edg e a nd t op of t extb lock . JOURNEY TO THE TRENCHES: THE LIFE OF ISAAC ROSENBERG 1890-1918., Cohen, Joseph.
7 Cohen, Joseph. JOURNEY TO THE TRENCHES: THE LIFE OF ISAAC ROSENBERG 1890-1918.
Robson, London, 1992.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0860517969 B&w illustrations. "When Isaac Rosenberg was killed in action on the Western Front in April 1918, the world lost one of the most striking talents of that ill-fated generation. He differe d from Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon - the two poets with whom he is most often compared - in that his was a double-faceted gift: he was both poet and painter. Also, unlike the other celebrated war poets, he was a private in the ranks, g i v i n g his poetry its particular, harrowing perspective. This moving and definitive biography is a fitting tribute to Rosenberg's tragically short life. Born to impoverished Russian Jewish immigrants, he grew up in London's East End, and onl y en li st ed t o escape the grinding poverty of home. After a short period in camp, he was sent straight to the Somme battlefields. Dr Cohen's study is based on an exhaustive examination of Rosenberg's drawings, paintings, prose pieces, poetry, l ett ers an d p riv at e family papers, and a close collaboration with the poet's late sister who was for many years his literary executrix. It is a story fraught with anxious striving, unremitting deprivation and unmerited neglect - neglect whi ch unti l re cent ly d ogge d h is reputation despite acclaim from a number of eminent critics, among them F R Leavis, who wrote 'genius is the word for Rosenberg'." Harper & Row, New York, (1987), Ist edition.

"(Dana) is a writer of strong, rich experience, which spans the city slums where he was born and came of age to the fields and skies and town life of Iowa where he has lived and taught for the past thirty years...his poems are often rooted in the harsh soil of his early memories...Tense to the point of being enigmatic, Dana is a poet whose voice one trusts: what he says he feels is validated by the precision and force of the saying itself..." ALCHEMIST OF WAR: THE LIFE OF BASIL LIDDELL HART., Danchev, Alex.
9 Danchev, Alex. ALCHEMIST OF WAR: THE LIFE OF BASIL LIDDELL HART.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1998, first edition.
369 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297816217 B&w photographs, reproductions. "Basil Liddell Hart was a rare bird: military writer, creative artist, journalist, propagandist, controversialist, archivist, adviser, exemplar, and thrower of stones. A war poet in prose - his best work carried a comparable charge - his writing engaged and enraged three generations. Like a true poet, his voice lingers. His language and his leanings saturate later thought, often unwittingly. Liddell Hart is the Bertrand Russell of his field: he is all-pervasive. Young people who looked up to him (in every sense) were often reminded of a stork - benign, fastidious, outlandish, perhaps even a little comic; undeniably impressive . He dressed well. He dined well. He tipped well. He consorted with Lawrence of Arabia. His womenfolk looked enchanting: he chose their clothes. For the Captain who taught Generals was an expert in more fields than one. He was also a leading authority on fashion - in particular, the corset. Liddell Hart had a sophisticated appreciation of l'artillerie de nuit. Like all great artists, his best ideas were other people's, made matchlessly his own. (This) is the first biography of this remarkable man: a brilliant evocation of a life more succulent, and more subversive, than we ever knew." Tiny bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has small wrinkle at top edge of rear flap, two 1" parallel knife scratches on rear panel. Near Fine /Very Good+

BENEATH MY FEET: THE MEMOIRS OF GEORGE MERCER DAWSON., Dawson, George Mercer. With Phil Jenkins.
10 Dawson, George Mercer. With Phil Jenkins. BENEATH MY FEET: THE MEMOIRS OF GEORGE MERCER DAWSON.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 2007, first edition.
350 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), pictorial hard cover - no dust jacket (as issued). ISBN 9780771043888 B&w photographs, maps. "George Mercer Dawson is a towering figure in Canadian history and science. Travelling by horse and canoe, he was a ground breaker in the Geological Survey's opening up of the Canadian West. In 1895, he became its director. A tough life for anyone, it was an extraordinary achievement for Dawson, who was crippled by a childhood illness that severely stunted his growth but heightened his lively spirit. An avid photographer, amateur painter, poet, and professional geologist, Dawson wrote constantly, but he never penned his memoirs. So, more than a century after his death in 1901, Phil Jenkins has lent him a hand. In Dawson's own words, Jenkins seamlessly relates the life of a great Canadian in the exciting age of exploration. It is a dazzling literary accomplishment. Dawson knew the pain of unrequited love, suffered the bite of a million mosquitoes, and yet he forged ahead, over mountainous physical odds, to become one of the most respected and enjoyed of Victorian Canadians." NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS., Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.)
11 Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.) NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS.
Philadelphia Chilton 1966 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
242 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Napoleon, that master strategist, created twenty-six Marshals of France between the years 1804 and 1815. These men, who held the highest positions in the Empire after Napoleon himself, came from diverse, and often humble backgrounds. Among the twenty-six were officers, sergeant majors, rankers, apprentices, a farmer's boy, a brewer, a poet, a smuggler, an actor, a barber, and a prince. The two qualities they all had in common were courage and ambition. During the years when Napoleon was conqueror of most of Europe, the marshals acquired titles and great riches, and in the end there was only one who was not to some extent corrupted by greed or ambition, and who remained loyal to the man who had elevated them all to power. Through their stories, and the eyes of the author, the entire panorama of French history, from the first days of the French Revolution until the restoration of the Bourbons, is seen. The color and excitement of the great battles, the strategy, the roll of history is here in (this book), the first to follow the actual careers of the marshals from July, 1789, until their deaths." 13 Durrell, Lawrence. COLLECTED POEMS.
London Faber and Faber 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
288 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H). "It is primarily as a lyrical poet and a poet of places that (Durrell) is acknowledged to excel, but now that he has assembled in (this book) 'all that the author wishes to preseve' it will be found that the range of feeling and ideas, of wit and experience, and also of style, is remarkable. The poems have been arranged by the author himself, not in chronological order but according to their various kinds. Mr. Durrell is a romantic poet in an age of didactic and sectarian poetry; and by temperament and choice Mediterranean rather than Nordic. All those who have acquired an ear for his verse by reading the volumes in which it has been published, and all those seriously interested in the poetry of the 'thirties, the 'forties and the 'fifties, will wish to have his 'Collected Poems'; other readers will come to it from his novels or his island books." 14 Edmond, Lauris. BONFIRES IN THE RAIN.
Bridget Williams, (Wellington, 1991).
241 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. B&w photographs. The second volume of New Zealand poet Lauris Edmond's autobiography. "For Lauris Edmond this was married life in its time of greatest fulfilment, with six children in a small New Zealand country town in the fifties. They were rich years, full of laughter and friendship and solidity - the way, she supposed, women's lives were meant to be. But dreams and expectations change, the experiences of loss and uncertainty impinge, and as the sixties became the seventies the world shifted on its axis. Women everywhere were questioning the old, familiar loyalties; for Lauris there was no ignoring the promptings of a talent - and a way of being - too long supressed...the remarkable account of a woman's journey from conformity to a tentative and painful independence; of the growth and death of a marriage, and the questioning and discovery of self. Eloquent and assured, this is autobiography at its most revealing, and confirms Lauris Edmonds as an outstanding prose writer." Interior - slight waviness to top of approx. pages 170 - 225, previous owners name on inside of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, two soft creases on front cover, book slightly cocked, spine uncreased. VG-

Social Credit was the family creed; dramatic productions the order of the day. Leaving this close family group, the student Lauris wrote intimate letters home: friends, books, betrayals, ideals, all life's vicissitudes appear on the page with a sparkle that confirms a writer's hand. Detailed, direct and charming, this is the story of a young girl's passage into womanhood..." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. THE SECRET MEANING OF THINGS., Ferlinghetti, Lawrence.
16 Ferlinghetti, Lawrence. THE SECRET MEANING OF THINGS.
New York New Directions 1968 Third Printing Soft Cover Good Signed by Author
48 pp, 7 15/16" H. Signed on half title page: "Ferlinghetti". "(B)rings together six long poems with a certain continuity and progression of vision. The first five poems form a related sequence in which the poet sees 'all too clearly'. In 'Assassination Raga' the 'glass' through which the poet sees darkly is the TV tube, and it was first read on the night of Robert Kennedy's funeral at a mammoth poetry reading in Nourse Auditorium, San Francisco. 'Bickford's Buddha' is a mediation on being afflicted with what the poet calls 'observation fever' - the ultimate vision being that of the 'all-seeing' Buddha. 'All too Clearly' finds a surreal meaning of things in flight. 'Through the Looking Glass' is also an in-flight poem, beginning with an actual flight aboard a commercial airliner and progressing through LSD vision to a final flash of how through everything 'Shiva advances with a broken arm'. 'After the Cries of Birds' is a logical opening-out of that vision into a wide-angle prophecy of the future of the world. 'Moscow in the Wilderness, Segovia in the Snow' is a separate long poem resulting from Ferlinghetti's trip across Russia and Siberia in the Winter of 1967." Interior - tiny bump at top corner of pages, one or two small light stains on inside of rear cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block and to edges of rear cover, an area of light liquid marks on rear cover, very light edge wear, small crease at bottom corner of front cover.

17 Finley, Gerald. GEORGE HERIOT: POSTMASTER-PAINTER OF THE CANADAS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1983 0802055842 / 9780802055842 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good George Heriot.
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w reproductions. "George Heriot (1759-1839), a Scot, is best known as a skilled landscape watercolourist and as the contentious deputy postmaster general of British North America from 1800 to 1816. He was also a travel writer and a poet. In this volume, a combination of biography and art history, Gerald Finaly presents, for the first time, a rounded picture of Heriot, revealing his motives and ideals while also illuminating the texture of life in Canada during the early years of settlement. In describing Heriot's several roles as artist, administrator, patriot, spy, Fnley presents a portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman whose superficial desires were for an active public life but whose deeper yearnings were for a life of contemplation. This volume serves to recognize Heriot's artistic achievement and to accord him the place he deserves in the history of Canadian art and the country itself." Minor wrinkling at top of spine, three small faint stains on rear board.

With an emphasis on the human aspects of Kingston life, (it) is an expression of affection not just for the city and its environs, but for its populace over the generations.
