168 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). "Swashbuckling, romantic, mysterious, fantastical - all these words can be used to describe the art in this splendid book of 'wondrous strange' paintings by four great American artists. Conceived and entitled by Betsy James Wyeth, (it) focuses on an aspect of American realism that stems from the great turn-of-the-century illustrator Howard Pyle and continues in the work of his student N.C. Wyeth, N.C.'s son Andrew Wyeth, and his grandson Jamie Wyeth. The thread that links the four artists is an imaginative, often disquieting, dreamlike imagery - 'the incarnation of the fantastic in everyday reality'. The colourful paintings - thirty by each artist - are brimming with madness, mystery, high emotion, and drama. As Susan Larsen notes in the introduction, this book 'is full of literary flights of fancy, exotic adventures, spiritual journeys, romantic encounters, and children's fables played out on the stage of ordinary life'. Other insightful essays examine the relationships among Pyle and the Wyeths, suggesting how illustration and the fine arts intersect in their work. (This) is an enchanting collection of art by America's most famous family of artists." Small bump at bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has come light edge wrinkling, light fading to spine and front hinge color.

The four-month voyage carried him 30,000 nautical mil es from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. Written with dash, colour, and droll humour, (his) narrative is peopled by a rich cast of characters, from the Forei g n L e g ionnaires of French Polnesia to the 'raskol' gangs of Papua New Guinea. The author captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship - the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramp ed q u ar te rs seem to exaggerate. ISBN 0002711354 "With the mighty Sikh Khalsa, the finest army ever seen in Asia, poised to invade India and sweep Britainnia's ill-guarded empire into the sea, every able-bodied man was needed to defend the frontier - and one at least had his answer ready when the Call of Duty came: 'I'll swim in blood first!' For stalwart Harry Flashman, arch-rotter of the Victorian era and the most decorated poltroon in the Army, had not lately escaped fr om Borneo pirates, London bookies, slavery in Madagascar, and the embraces of a mad black queen, just to be plunged into even more dreadful peril - not if he could help it. Alas - there was no avoiding the terrors of secret service in the deba u c h e d and intrigue-ridden Court of the Punjab, the attentions of its beautiful nymphomaniac Maharani (not that he minded that, really), the horrors of its torture chambers, the plots of such fearsome figures as the Tartan Pathan, the Golden Hen , an d th e mysterious Man Who Would Be King, or the baleful influence of the Mountain of Light. And that was only the beginning: ahead lay the carnage of the bloodiest campaign ever fought in India, when Sikh, Briton, and Sepoy contended for an em pi re, a nd it s fate rested on a crazy old Irish gneral and the panic-stricken Flashy vainly trying to hide behind him." But one of his officers proved treacherous, causing the Malamok's eldest son to be unjustly dishonoured and imprisoned. Thenceforward, misfortune dogged the Malamok who had withdrawn from the king's service and become a pirate. All of his ships but one were destroyed, and the old buccaneer knew only one aim: that of vengeance so that the family name might be cleared. 306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715389629 B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The bus industry is going through a period of rapid change, and this is best understood against the background of events, for decisions taken a s long ago as 1916 still influence its structure, and the way busmen think about their function. There are many strands to the story, the longest taking us back to the appearance of the hackney carriage and the stage coach in the seventee n t h c e n t u r y. There are the combine companies of the inter-war years, and their battle with the four main line railways for control of their services; there are the 'pirates', old and new; and there are the municipal transport fleets, stemm in g us u al ly f ro m tr amway operations. We have to go to nineteenth century France for the origin of the name 'omnibus' itself. Professor Hibbs discusses the effect of technical advances on the provision of public services, and writes of tick et sy ste ms , t ime tab les , fle et names and liveries, and some of the odder regulations that govern operations and the travelling public. There is an objective discussion of methods of licensing and control, and of the economic and political ba ckg rou nd o f t he b us o pera tors . But this is the story of the men and women as well as motor vehicles; of shrewd pioneers, international financiers, trade unionists and well-known politicians. Not least it is the story of the crews on the b uses , fo r who m th e ind ustry is n ot ju st a li ving, but a way of life as well....(this new edition includes a chapter that brings) the story from 1968 to 1988." From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." 198 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070311382 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with reproductions, photographs, musical notation. "Life was short, brutal, lonely and joyless for the 'jolly tar', except for strong dr ink, women - and the solace of song. So he sang: short, rhythmic, onomatopoeic chants to time his backbreaking work at capstan and halyard, the famous 'shanties'. Or longer, ribald or forlorn ditties for idle moments, called 'forebitters' a f t e r t h e metal bollards on the fo'c's'lehead. He sang bravura songs when outward bound; yearning, sexier songs for the homeward reach; warning songs of pirates, press gangs, and faithless maidens; and songs of admiration for the likes of s u ch s ai lo rs as ' Bold MacCarteney'....And here they are, the authentic words and music of more than a hundred sea songs and chants in half a dozen languages. Some are as old as the mists of time, some as new as the great steel-hulled four-ma st ers in th e n itr a te run s of the 1890s....To describe and interpret that history, the book begins with an illustrated look at the sailors' varied machines: ships, brigs, barks, schooners, sloops and so on - and their marvelously complex rigg ing s. Ther e is a h andy g los sary of terms and vernacular, and many clear explanations of customs and language, from the above-mentioned forebitters to the gruesome 'Nelson's Blood' and the ever-present 'Armstrong's Patent' - the muscle power that ma de ev eryth ing g o. T he sail or's skills, dress, pay, superstitions, drink, food - and loves - are clearly described and pictured. There are anecdotes galore: stories of shanghaiing and mutiny, shipwreck and cannabilism, storms and trop ical isle s.
