PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS., Barrie, J.M.
4 Barrie, J.M. PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS.
London Hodder and Stoughton Hard Cover Good Arthur Rackham.
126 pp, 8 1/4" H. Red cloth with gilt lettering on spine, gilt illustration (Peter sitting on mushrooms playing pipes) and blindstamped decoration on front board. No date, but Xmas inscription dated 1926 on half title page. 16 tipped in colour plates (including frontispiece) with captioned tissue guards. All the plates are in clean, bright condition - wonderful examples of Arthur Rackham's fantastically imaginative portrayals of fairies, children, birds, gnarly trees, etc. This version of the tale is quite different from the play and later Disney adaptations - no Tinkerbelle, Captain Hook or Wendy, it focuses on Peter Pan's life in London's famous Kensington Gardens and his interactions with the fairies and birds that live there. A slight separation between a few page gatherings but pages are holding firmly, faint toning to margins of pages and tissues, very slight crl to top corner of pages, a few scattered tiny faint foxing marks throughtout pages, very small tear with crease at top of page 17 - archivally taped, colored plate opposite page 32 has been re-tipped in at top edge and is slightly mis-aligned to page - was originally tipped in at edge nearest hinge leaving faint location mark, areas of very light browning on endpapers, slight fading to spine color - a little more at bottom 1/2" of spine, light wear/wrinkling at top bottom of spine with a few tiny tears, three very small light liquid marks on rear board, book is lightly cocked.

Music for Regimental Quick March (The Garb of Old Gaul), Bugle Charge, and Regimental Quick March for Pipes & Drums (Highland Laddie). "At Waterlo o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides." 8 Collinson, Francis. THE BAGPIPE: THE HISTORY OF A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1975, first edition.
257 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0710079133 B&w illustrations. "....(a) fascinating full-length history of one of the world's most interesting and ancient musical instruments. The story begins in 3000 B.C. with the mouth-blown reed pipes, predecessor to the bagpipe. Mr Collinson looks at the history of this instrument as known in ancient Babylonia and Egypt, through the ancient Grecian Empire and Greece itself, to Rome and thence to Britain. He investigates the application of the bag principle to the mouth-blown pipes in Hellenic Egypt and Rome, and the first appearance of the bagpipe in Great Britain and Ireland in the eleventh or twelfth century. He describes the development of the bagpipe in the Br itish Isles, its rise and gradual waning, leaving the Scottish Highland bagpipe and the Northumbrian pipes as the sole survivors. Having traced its evolution, the book goes on to narrate the fortunes of the 'Great Highland Bagpipe' itself. T h i s i s an account which encompasses the Jacobite risings and Culloden, and the Disarming Act 1747, by which the use of the bagpipe was more or less proscribed. It covers the great music of Pibroch, in the hands of the MacCrimmons and other p ip er s, a n d co ntinues up to modern times. Appendices list the bagpipes of other countries and the materials used in the instrument's manufacture, and there is a comprehensive bibliography." THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLAND REGIMENT) (THE 42nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Howard, Philip. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
10 Howard, Philip. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLAND REGIMENT) (THE 42nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, reprint.
141 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520193 B&w photographs, reproductions. "The Royal Highlanders....the Gallant Forty-Two....The Germans christened them 'the ladies from hell'. Down the stormy centuries from Fontenoy to the Hook in Korea Britain's enemies have called them other less printable names. But when they were first raised as a police force to keep the peace in the turbulent and inaccessible Highlands, the locals nick-named them (in Gaelic, of course) the Black Watch. And the menacing name has stuck. Their old 'black' tartan has stuck too, and today is worn by imitators around the world from Tokyo to Trinidad. It was the first kilted regiment in the British army, the original ancestor of all the o ther famous regiments that were later raised in the Highlands. Until Waterloo Gaelic was the language of the Black Watch, and it is still spoken on occasions. They brought the bagpipes into the British army, because the Highlanders refused t o m a r c h without their pipes. In those early days they charged with claymore and dirk. Today they are fully motorized and mechanized for nuclear war. But the heart of the Black Watch is still Highland. The stern old regiment still keeps it s un i qu e tr ad itions. In the wild places of the world, in the most ferocious battles of the British army where victory was balanced on a bayonet point, the Black Watch has usually been there. And still today he is a man of lead whose imaginati on do es no t tin gl e when the hears the pipes play 'Hieland Laddie' (pipe score at rear of book), and sees the long lines of kilts swinging jauntily down the hill." Faint cigarette odor, minor edge wear, minor browning on spine. Dust jacket is pric e c lipp ed , ha s li ght edge wear/wrinkling, tiny chips and tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few very small edge tears, moderate browning on spine and flap-folds.
