4 Cook, Glen. OLD TIN SORROWS. GARRETT P.I. SERIES.
Markham, Ontario New American Library / Signet 1989 0451160134 / 9780451160133 Mass Market Paperback Very Good
252 pages, 6 15/16" H. "A corps of corpses was what it seemed Garrett had committed himself to when Blake Peters turned up to reclaim some overdue favors. Someone was trying to kill Peters' boss, wealthy, retired General Stantor, in a most lingering, painful, and maybe poisonous way. And Peters wanted Garrett to keep the general from becoming a ghost of himself. But Stantnor's mansion held a host of surprises for a human detective who thought he'd seen it all. For while the general was dying slowly, his employees were losing their lives at a far speedier rate. And when some of the not-long-departed tried to enlist their comrades in the growing legions of the dead, Garrett knew it was time to call in his own troops in the person of Morley Dotes, the toughest half-elf around. Morley would guard his back against whoever had decided that Garrett, too, belonged six feet underground. And meanwhile, Garrett would try to handle - or get his hands on - both the killer and the mansion's two elusive beauties - who seemed invisible to everyone but Garrett!" Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear.

THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO., Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by.
6 Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by. THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO.
Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1966 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. B&w illustrations (1 colour), fold-out map. "The period covered by this book is one of the most important in the history of Toronto. It begins in February, 1815, when news of the end of the War of 1812 reached York, and ends on March 6, 1834, when Toronto became the first incorporated city in Ontario. During this time it had changed from a small, undistinguished village, whose main reason for being was that it was the capital of Upper Canada, to a booming city. Immigration increased the population fourteen-fold, and gave to Toronto the strongly British attitudes it was to maintain for more than a century. Individuals acting alone could no longer accomplish what was needed by the burgeoning community, and the citizens of York combined to provide a more or less efficient system for coping with their problems. Towards the end of the period political animus and the outbreak of cholera complicated its smooth functioning, but nevertheless the prototypes of many of Toronto's present institutions were established at this time." Two faint 1" surface paper scratches/scuffs at top corner of pages xlii & xliii. Dust jacket has very rubbing, very light edge wear at top/bottom of flap-folds.

THE SOMERSET & DORSET THEN AND NOW., Hawkins, Mac.
9 Hawkins, Mac. THE SOMERSET & DORSET THEN AND NOW.
Guild Publishing, London, (1986), book club edition.
272 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, color plates. "The (Somerset & Doreset) line was recorded in its heyday by railway photographers of the first order, talents like those of Ivo Peters, Derek Cross and Dick Riley, men who recognized the unique variety of stock and scenery afforded by the line. Their pictures document the impact of the railway upon the landscape and capture the true atmosphere of the era. In this book will be found many previously unpublished examples of their work. Two decades after the closure of the Somerset & Dorset (1966) another photographer returned to the scenes of his predecessors' work and embarked on an unusual mission - to document what remained of this once proud line, and even more ambitiously, to record what can still be seen today from the same vantage points. Working out the precise location from which an earlier photograph was taken, Mac Hawkins has gone to extraordinary lengths to recreate the work of his antecedents...Including over 150 pairs of 'then and now' photographs and many maps, this unique record of the passage of time is considerably more than a volume of railway memorabilia - it is a fine tribute to the art of the earlier photographers and the skill and patience of Mac Hawkins..." Very faint cigarette odor, one small corner bump. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing, minor browning at top of flaps. VG/VG

10 Kimber, Stephen. LOYALISTS AND LAYABOUTS. THE RAPID RISE AND FASTER FALL OF SHELBURNE, NOVA SCOTIA: 1783-1792.
Doubleday Canada 2008 038566172X / 9780385661720 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
335 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The few hundred Loyalists who gathered at Roubalet's Tavern in New York one night in 1782 shared a nightmare of the past and a dream for the future. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, they found themselves abandoned by the king to whom they had promised their loyalty, and unwelcome in the land that had so recently been theirs. On the rocky shores of Roseway Bay on the south coast of Nova Scotia, beside one of the best harbours in the world, they would found a new and improved New York City. It would be cosmopolitan, but more refined, more royal, more loyal and certainly more exclusive than the place they were leaving forever. At first, all seemed to go according to plan. Shelburne, as it was called, quickly became the fourth-largest city in North America. At the time, Nova Scotia Governor John Parr grandly decribed it as 'the most considerable, most flourishing and most expeditious (city) ever -- built in so short a time --'. Within the decade, however, the Loyalists' dream city was well on its way to becoming a ghost town. What went wrong? This extraordinary and yet little-told episode from our nation's past is brought to exciting life. Combining painstaking research and a novelstic flair for narrative, (Kimber) charts Shelburne's 'rapid rise and faster fall' through the intertwined experiences of an eclectic collection of its early settlers, from aristocrats to freed slaves, colonial officers to local entrepreneurs." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny edge bumps to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

Throughout Marlborough's campaigns they distinguished themselve s as steady, reliable fighting troops, and by the end had earned themselves five battle-honours. The long list of foreign stations includes Canada, America, India, Chitral, South Africa, where the Regiment's mounted infantry company played a l a r g e part in the final surrender of the Boers; and so up to the Great War. Twenty-two battalions were raised by the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, battalions who saw action from Flanders to Gallipoli, from Egypt to Jerusalem. T h e S ec on d Wa r b rought the Regiment glory at Dunkirk, in Singapore they lost a whole battalion, their skill as part of General Orde Wingate's Chindits was a source of bewilderment to the enemy; from North Africa to Italy they were an omnipresen t me na ce to wh oev er t ried to stop them. These, then, are the men of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, brave, thorough and skilled, and this book is worthy of them." Includes music of the Regimental March. THE KING'S SCHOOL GLOUCESTER., Robertson, David.
14 Robertson, David. THE KING'S SCHOOL GLOUCESTER.
Phillimore, (London, 1974), first edition.
218 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "The King's School continues an educational tradition that has lasted more than 900 years, with only one short break between the dissolution of the medieval Abbey of St. Peters and Henry VIII's establishment of the present school as part of the new Cathedral Church in 1545. A monastic school was well established when Abbot Serlo arrived in 1072, followed by an Almonry School which flourished up to the Dissolution. Through out the 17th and 18th centuries it was one of England's principal grammar schools, to which were sent the sons not only of leading Gloucestershire families but also of families of distinction from all over the country. The 19th century and the early years of this saw the School facing severe financial problems, but their eventual solution by the Ministry of Education and the Church Commissioners has led to revival and rapid expansion in recent years. Former pupils include many men who have achieved positions of national importance, including the joint founders of the Sunday School movement, one of the founders of Methodism, several bishops and an Archbishop of Canterbury, a famous explorer, and the compo ser of the American National Anthem. In these days of widespread questioning of teaching practices, Mr. Robertson's book will be of interest to historians and educationalists as an account of a school which has managed to maintain tradition and high standards over many centuries and to combine them with the most modern teaching." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine, light browning to parts of endpapers, minor rub marks on front board, tiny speck on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket is price clipped, has old price sticker on front flap, tiny tear and wrinkling at top of spine, several heavy creases down fore-edge of flaps, very light rubbing and soiling on rear panel.
