NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
4 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

5 Brockhouse, Robert. THE ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE: A CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS.
Toronto McArthur 2007 155278648X / 9781552786482 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Edward Burtynsky, photographer.
346 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour, b&w and sepiatone with photographs/reproductions. "It was one of those grand civic gestures so loved by the aristocracy of the Gilded Age: a gift to Toronto meant to call the world's attention to its blossoming as a great city. The giver was Cawthra Mulock, 'the boy millionaire', one of the wealthiest men in Canada. The gift was the Royal Alexandra, a magnificent new theatre built - with no regard to cost - to equal the most splendid houses of London, Paris and New York. It was to be the lodestar of North American theatres, attracting the finest performers and the very best in dramatic art to a city that still smarted under the nickname 'Hogtown'. If Cawthra Mulock had known what obstacles lay in the way, he might never have broken ground. He could not have foreseen the cut-throat rivals who would seek to bankrupt him; nor the two World Wars; nor the coming of the movies, radio and television; nor the Great Depression that would close every other theatre in the country. This book tells the story of a Canadian national landmark and beloved Toronto institution, and of the remarkable, dogged and devoted champions - from Mulock to Mirvish - who have kept it alive, thriving and triumphant over 100 years." Small crease at top edge of pages 193 to 204., light waviness to edges og text block, very light wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing, very soft wrinkle on rear panel.

6 Broughton, R. Peter. LOOKING UP: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY OF CANADA.
Toronto Dundurn 1994 1550022083 / 9781550022087 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
288 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "One hundred and twenty-five years ago eight men met on December 1, 1868, to form the Toronto Astronomical Club. Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two small shallow dents at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top rear edge and at bottom of spine, minor rubbing, 2" faint scratch on rear panel.

"In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders." 373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." 15 Gilbert, Adrian; Wilson, Alan; Blackett, Baram. THE HOLY KINGDOM. THE QUEST FOR THE REAL KING ARTHUR.
London Bantam 1998 0593040627 / 9780593040621 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
379 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, colour photographs. "(T)he authors, using ancient historical records, show that Britain was never fully conquered by the Romans but retained its culture, its royal families intermarrying with the Caesars. With the coming of Joseph of Arimathea in AD 37, its kings became converts to Christianity and the island the secret home of many of Jesus's followers. Out of these crosswinds blowing from Rome and Judea emerged the Holy Kingdom that was eventually to give birth to Constantine the Great and turn the whole Roman Empire to Christianity. Two British kings, both named Arthur - one, Arthur I of Warwickshire, the fourth-century son of the emperor Magnus Maximus, the other his sixth-century descendant and a king of Glamorgan - stand out like beacons in a darkening world. Their careers rolled into one and elaborated upon by the medieval poets, they became the single King Arthur of myth and legend. As a result of research going back over forty years, the authors are able to reveal the location of the graves of both Arthurs, the burial place of the 'true cross of Christ' and many other mysteries. This astounding book, corrects the falsified notions of history perpetuated by earlier scholars to reveal a deeper and more exciting vision. It uncovers a secret historical current that links our own times with the mysteries of Arthur and the Holy Grail. In doing so, it challenges many orthodox beliefs perpetuated by a Church which long ago lost touch with its roots." Light browning to edges of text block - migrates very lightly into page margins, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minoe edge wear, tiny tear at top of spine.

"(The first book) to be devoted exclusively to the Battle of Corunna and to the short campaign which preceded it. Mr Hibbert has made extensive use of the many eye-witness accounts which survive in the form of official despatches, histories, diaries, memoirs and letters. With the aid of these, he not only shows a remarkable understanding of Sir John Moore and his fellow-officers, of their conflicting characters and views, but he also provides, through the eyes of officers and men alike, a horrifying picture of the hardships of this brief and bitter campaign. The narra-tive is made the more vivid by the numerous illustrations from contemporary paintings and engravings, and by the five specially prepared maps."
