1 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

2 Blake, Steve and Lloyd, Scott. With John Baldock. THE KEYS TO AVALON: THE TRUE LOCATION OF ARTHUR'S KINGDOM REVEALED.
Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS., Crowlesmith, J., Rev.
3 Crowlesmith, J., Rev. STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS.
London Aldine Hard Cover Good Fair H.S. Greig.
172 pp, 7 1/2" H. Red boards with black lettering/illustration on spine and front board. Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. No date, but Xmas greetings on free front endpaper dated 1936. "The stories that follow are taken from Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur', the great collection of romances about King Arthur which was written in the fifteenth century, and printed first of all by Caxton. Scholars say that Arthur was a British hero, one of the leaders of the Britons against the English invaders in the sixth century. In course of time legends centred round his name in the memory of the defeated race. To the original stories the Middle Ages added others, some of which belonged to later heroes, and, finally, these were combined with various legends of the Christian Church about the finding of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ is said to have drunk at the Last Supper with His disciples. Thus we get the beautiful cycle of romances which shines in the pages of Malory's great book. This version has been written for younger children. As far as possible the old-world style of Malory's narrative has been preserved, while the stories chosen are those which seem to present a message to youth." Contents: Introduction; The Sword in the Stone; King Arthur sees a Strange Knight; The Sword Excalibur; Balin, the Poor Knight; The Invisible Knight; The Battle of the Brothers; The Table Round; The Merciful Knight; The Death of Merlin; King Arthur and Accolon; The Lady of the Lake; The Marvellous Giant; The Two Giants; The Disguised Knight; The Shipwreck of Sir Lamorak; Launcelot and the Dragon; Sir Bors in the Castle Adventurous; Sir Gawaine's Rescue; The Knight with the Ugly Coat; Sir Tristram and King Mark; The Story of Sir Alisander; When Sir Launcelot was Mad; Seeking the Holy Grail; Sir Galahad's Shield; Sir Launcelot and the Holy Grail; Sir Percivale and the Lion; The Holy Grail is Seen; Fed by the Holy Grail; The Death of Sir Galahad; The Poisoned Apple; The Lady of Astolat; End of the Table Round; The Death of Arthur. Light to moderate edge wear, 1" tear at bottom of front hinge, book is slightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light fading at top edge of spine, Christmas gift inscription on front free endpaper, wrinkling on frontispiece near gutter. 4 Hopkins, Andrea. THE BOOK OF GUINEVERE, LEGENDARY QUEEN OF CAMELOT.
Prospero 1998 0886653584 / 9780886653583 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
96 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and colour reproductions, decorations. "The enigma of Guinevere, a beautiful and courageous queen or a disgraced adulteress, has received less attention than the achievements of King Arthur, the adventures of noble Sir Lancelot and other knights, the magic of Merlin, or the sorcery of Morgan Le Fay. A key figure in the life of Camelot, this remarkable woman is seen variously as a scholar, seductress, warrior and gentle beauty by the countless artists and writers who have depicted her. Who, then, was Guinevere? (This) is an elegant anthology of poetry and prose, literature and legend, with commentary by Arthurian scholar Andrea Hopkins, accompanied by beautiful illustrations from medieval manuscript illumination to pre-Raphaelite masterpieces. An enlightening introduction describes the contradictory traditions of Celtic oral sources and the blending of these strands by medieval writers into the complex legend we know know. Guinevere's roles - as educated scribe to the court, hapless victim of circumstances, wise counsellor, devoted wife of King Arthur, and lover of Sir Lancelot - are explored through writings through the centuries by detractors and admirers alike." Very light edge wear, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, light fading to spine color.

It is the remarkable adventure of Charis - the courageous princess from Atlantis who escapes the terrible devastation of her land - and of the fabled seer and druid prince Taliesin, singer at the dawn of the age. Pendragon - 436 pp, 1995, 4th printing, ISBN 0380717573 - "Arthur is King - but darkest evil has descended upon Britain's shores in many guises. Fragile alliances fray and tear, threatening all the noble liege has won with this wisdom and his blood. In this black time of plague and pestilence, Arthur's most trusted counselor Myrddin - the warrior, bard, and kingmaker whom legend will name Merlin - is himself to be tested on a mystical journey through his own extraordinary past. So Arthur must stand alone against a great and terrible adversary. For only thus can he truly win immortality - and the name he will treasure above all others: Pendragon." 5. Grail - 385 pp, 1998, 4th printing, ISBN 0380781042 - "Drought, plague, and war have left the Isle of the Mighty battered and its heart, the beloved Arthur, grievously injured - until a secret relic is brought before the dying King; a Holy Grail that heals his wounds and restores his vigor. But soon evil enters the royal court in the guise of a beautiful maiden; a soulless, malevolent force capable of seducing the King's loyal champion, confounding the sage whom some call Merlin, and carrying the sacred Grail - and Arthur's adored Queen - off into the dark unknown. MABON AND THE MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN: AN EXPLORATION OF THE MABINOGION., Matthews, Caitlin.
7 Matthews, Caitlin. MABON AND THE MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN: AN EXPLORATION OF THE MABINOGION.
London Arkana 1987 1850630526 / 9781850630524 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Chesca Potter.
205 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "On one level (this) is a literary guide and deals with the mythological patterns which underlie the Mabinogion. On another, it is a deep exploration of the Western Mysteries as they emerge from the tales of the Four Branches, of Colhwch and Olwen and Taliesin. Within these stories lie the identities of two major figures of the native tradition: Mabon, the Wondrous Youth who is lost and found, and Modron, his mother, the Great Goddess herself. Here the initiatory pattern of Britain's inner guardians is revealed in the Succession of the Pendragons; the release of Mabon is affected with the help of the Totem Beasts, before the birth of time; while the cosmic harp of the Wondrous Youth ushers in the Aquarian Age. Drawing on this first exploration of the Mabinogion, the reader can trace for himself the archetypes and mythological themes from which these medieval stories, themselves descendants of proto-Celtic oral tradition, are derived." Interior - very light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, soft crease at top part of front hinge, light browning to edges of text block, small soft corner crease on rear cover, spine flat and uncreased, ISBN label on rear cover.
