IN RUPERT'S LAND: MEMOIRS OF WALTER TRAILL., Atwood, Mae, editor. (Walter Traill.)
2 Atwood, Mae, editor. (Walter Traill.) IN RUPERT'S LAND: MEMOIRS OF WALTER TRAILL.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
232 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers. "Here is a lively and informative history of Walter J.S. Traill, youngest son of the famous Canadian pioneer settler, Catharine Parr Traill. Born in 1847, (he) left home - near Lakefield in Canada West - at 19 and set out for Prince Rupert's Land as a clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company, and this book is a collection of authentic writings compiled from his letters and journals by his nephew's wife. He tells of the day-to-day life of the Hudson's Bay clerks, of the hardships, the loneliness. The colonists are often hungry, and he recounts occasions when they ate sled dogs to prevent starvation. Traill presents a picture of the Riel rebellion, as he was for a time, a prisoner of Riel in Fort Garry and only released on condition that he left the territory Being a loyal Hudson's Bay man, he is strongly antagonistic to Louis Riel, but the rest of his writing reveals an objectivity and broadmindedness that is astonishing for the Victorian era." A couple of pages with tiny corner crease, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, some rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, a few tiny edge chips and tears, very light browning at edges and on spine.

3 Bowyer, Michael J.F. 2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY, 1936-1945. (RAF)
Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

BENEATH MY FEET: THE MEMOIRS OF GEORGE MERCER DAWSON., Dawson, George Mercer. With Phil Jenkins.
5 Dawson, George Mercer. With Phil Jenkins. BENEATH MY FEET: THE MEMOIRS OF GEORGE MERCER DAWSON.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 2007, first edition.
350 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), pictorial hard cover - no dust jacket (as issued). ISBN 9780771043888 B&w photographs, maps. "George Mercer Dawson is a towering figure in Canadian history and science. Travelling by horse and canoe, he was a ground breaker in the Geological Survey's opening up of the Canadian West. In 1895, he became its director. A tough life for anyone, it was an extraordinary achievement for Dawson, who was crippled by a childhood illness that severely stunted his growth but heightened his lively spirit. An avid photographer, amateur painter, poet, and professional geologist, Dawson wrote constantly, but he never penned his memoirs. So, more than a century after his death in 1901, Phil Jenkins has lent him a hand. In Dawson's own words, Jenkins seamlessly relates the life of a great Canadian in the exciting age of exploration. It is a dazzling literary accomplishment. Dawson knew the pain of unrequited love, suffered the bite of a million mosquitoes, and yet he forged ahead, over mountainous physical odds, to become one of the most respected and enjoyed of Victorian Canadians." ADVENTURERS IN THE WEST: HENRY ROSS HALPIN, FUR TRADER AND INDIAN AGENT., Elliott, David R. Foreword by Dr. Richard J. Preston.
6 Elliott, David R. Foreword by Dr. Richard J. Preston. ADVENTURERS IN THE WEST: HENRY ROSS HALPIN, FUR TRADER AND INDIAN AGENT.
Natural Heritage / Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
239 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781550028034 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "In 1872, Irish-born, seventeen-year-old Henry Ross Halpin arrived in Fort Garry, Manitoba, to take up a position with the Hudson's Bay Company. His career took him from the shores of Hudson Bay, across the plains, and to the headwaters of the Mackenzie River. Throughout his life, he immersed himself in learning the traditions and culture of Canada's Native Peoples and ultimately became an Indian agent. At his death in 1930, he was described as 'one of the best acquainted with Indian tradition and legend in the west'. Halpin was catapulted onto the historical stage in 1885, being captured by rebel Cree and serving as a secretary/negotiator for Big Bear, the non-rebel Cree chief at the siege of Fort Pitt. Born into a family of journalists, he was a great storyteller and astute observer. His memoirs of his life in the fur trade and of his captivity, combined with his correspondence and annual reports to the Department of Indian Affairs, offer a rare glimpse of life during these turbulent times of change in the West."
