LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS., Brown, Jane.
5 Brown, Jane. LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS.
London Viking 1996 0670858714 / 9780670858712 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). "The great architect and his architecture are well known, but what about his patrons, his clients? Who were they? Why did they build? What did they pay for their buildings? From his earliest patrons, a stream of repressed gentlewomen of intelligence and means, through a galaxy of Edwardian heroes and villains, this book tells their stories. Some of them are famous, others unknown, except as Lutyen's clients: here are Herbert Jekyll, Jennie Churchill, J.M. Barrie, Hugh Lane, Victoria Sackville, lords, ladies, Souls, bankers, press barons, politicians, the beau monde of Edwardian England, as well as a schoolteacher who inherited a fortune and a prospering Bradford wool merchant. The complex networking of families and friends threads through the events and settings of Edwardian society, like a richly patterned embroidery. Everything of significance that Lutyens did had its roots in the Edwardian decade - and his clients turn out to be both the triumph and the tragedy of his career. (L)avishly illustrated with the human face of great architecture - sketches, drawings and photographs from family archives all over England." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, slight browning to spine, edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

Dundurn, Toronto, 2004, first edition.
318 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550025120 "This is (the story of Deward Barnes, a Canadian soldier of WWI), in his words, written as the events of the Great War were unfolding. Illustrated with Deward's sketches and contemporary photos, (it) takes us into the mind of this ordinary Canadian soldier, trapped in a world in which he had to pay a terrible price in order to survive. In 1917, Deward was assigned to the firing squad that was to take the life of Pr i v a te Harold Lodge, who had been convicted of desertion by a court martial. Lodge was one of 23 Canadians executed during the war by their own brothers at arms. It was an experience that changed Deward forever. Bruce Cane has provided valuable i ns ig hts into Deward's words by juxtaposing (them) with the official accounts of these events, along with other first-hand accounts from the period, in order to capture the nuance of each of his entries. Deward Barnes' diary takes us into the t ren che s a nd firing lines of the Western Front like no other first-hand Canadian account before. Deward's is the voice of the Canadian soldier, Everyman in khaki, the men who today lie in their graves in the fields of Flanders and Picardy." 270 pages, 6 13/16" H. "Blood-soaked blades had been taking their toll among the luscious lovelies in Garrett's home city of TunFaire. And though Garrett could be as civic-minded as the next guy - unless the next guy was Captain Block of the Watch - the private eye wasn't sure he really wanted to take on a serial killer psycho who did too good a carving job and never left any of the blood behind. Still, having Block pay him for his services with lots of ill-gotten government funds, and having his own partner, the Dead Man, strenuously urge him to take the case, proved an irresistible combination for Garrett. And so the top - and only - private eye around found himself lining up his allies for a search that would take him from the lowest slums to the highest estates, from confrontations with butterfly- and magic-spitting enemies to run-ins with the king of crime's wayward daughter to a final encounter with an ancient evil which had once again been loosed on his unsuspecting town." Toronto HarperCollins 1991 0002158426 / 9780002158428 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
408 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The stunning defeat of David Peterson's powerful Liberal government on September 6, 1990 broke many of the old rules for Canadian elections - and provided the first glimpse of how future elections will be fought. At the center of the story: Liberal leader David Peterson. Young, handsome and rich, he embodied the glory years of the 1980s when Yuppies, BMWs and image politics ruled. His decision to 'go early', to call an election only three years into his mandate, set the wheels in motion. His campaign attracts some of Canada's leading political players: campaign chair Kathy Robinson, whose pivotal position becomes a hotseat as the Liberal slide begins; former Trudeau pollster Martin Goldfarb, anxious to keep a Liberal government in power; David MacNaughton, Goldfarb critic and rival; Bob Nixon, the tough and respected treasurer faced with scuttling his balanced budget in a last-ditch vote-buying attempt; aide Vince Borg, Peterson's long-time friend, who tries to protect the premier from protesters and Liberals alike. These key players and an army of policy experts, strategists, party members, candidates and reporters tangle and clash in the race for power. (The) gripping account of how the Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also the reavealing tale of how Ontario's New Democratic and Progressive Conservative parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters." M. Evans, New York, 1992, reprint.
366 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0871317052 B&w maps. "(S)hows how the rise and decline of imperial Rome was intimately connected with the balance of political and military power. The role of the army in the Roman em pire was a formidable one: the emperor depended on the soldiers for his continued existence, as did the empire itself. But an army powerful enought to defend the frontiers and keep the Roman peace also had the power to destroy the emperor. A g a i n s t this ever-present danger the emperors took unceasing precautions, one of their principal methods being to surround themselves with bodyguards, the Praetorian Guard. But what began as a protective measure had wider repercussions, for th e Gu ar d ca me to play an even greater part in the internal politics of the empire...The story of 'The Army of the Caesars' provides a model of how civil strife, focused around the holders of military power inevitably occurs, endangering the pr eca ri ous eq ui lib riu m of large areas of the world." Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1988, first edition.
418 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0370312279 Color portrait frontispiece. "Viscount Barrington served as Secretary at War under George II and George III from 1755 to 1778, with only a few years' interval during which he held other offices of state. The collection of documents presented in this volume is designed to show how the War Office worked during the incumbency of this unusually conscientious and effective minister, and throws a remarkable light on an i m p o r t a n t area of eighteenth-century history and on the way in which public policy and administration were connected. Why, for example, was the War Office organized and managed in the way it was? Why was its incumbent furnished with a bri ef i n re al it y so i m portant and yet technically so restricted in its public responsibility? Was he really (as he often claimed) without power? Or, if he did have power, of what sort was it? How successfully could any one man deal with a ro le whi ch re qui red h im at ti mes to perform as an official in a department, at others as a courtier and confidential secretary to a monarch, and at others as a spokesman in Parliament, as well as composing quarrels within the army, and between the arm y a nd t he p ubli c? Al tho ugh there can be no complete solution to these problems, either for an eighteenth-century Secretary of War or for a twentieth-century historian, this collection, divided up thematically to illustrate the varie d re spons ibil ites borne by t he War Offi ce, provides material for a better understanding of them." Wayland, London, 1974, first edition.
128 pp, 4to (11 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour reproductions, photographs. "Conventional warfare today can still be a matter of bloody face-to-face fighting but the modern British soldier, a highly-trained, well-equipped speci alist, is a far cry from the ill-clad yeoman of the Middle Ages. In this evocative book Matthew Holden illustrates how this change has come about, starting with the Norman Conquest and setting the narrative in the context of British society a n d d e v elopments in military techniques and strategy. Drawing on vivid eyewitness accounts he describes the British soldier's everyday life through the centuries in terms of pay, conditions, discipline, medical services and other aspects, and h e cr e at es a fascinating picture of changing attitudes, both towards the fighting community and inside it."
