OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
1 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME., D'Este, Carlo.
2 D'Este, Carlo. FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME.
HarperCollins, New York, 1991, book club edition.
566 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "By taking advantage of Allied command of the sea and air to effect complete surprise, infantry and armored forces landing at Anzio on January 22 were expected to secure a beachhead and then push inland to cut the two main highways and railroads supplying the German armies to the south, either trapping and annihilating them or forcing them to withdraw north and opening the way to R o m e . S u c h was the plan. What really happened, brilliantly told by Carlo D'Este, was a near disaster for the Allies and the unfortunate soldiers involved. Doomed by uncertain leadership at the highest levels, including Churchill's pressure an d me dd l in g, G en eral Sir Harold Alexander's lack of firm directives, and General Mark Clark's unwillingness to risk defeat or push a tired General John Lucas, the Anzio beachhead became a death trap, with Allied troops forced to fight for the ir li ves f o r f ive dr ead ful months in a throwback to the trench warfare of World War I. Even the enventual Allied victory, when the Germans finally gave way in May 1944, was tarnished by Clark's ambition to be first in Rome instead of a ttem pti ng t o cu t o ff and des troy or capture fleeing German troops...." 3 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

"(T)he incredible story of an extraordinary group of American artists, designers, and engineering wizards who became America's unsung heroes o f the Second World War....The men of the 23d Headquarters Special Troops were recruited to become phantom warriors in a ghost army to help win the Battle of Europe. They fought in more campaigns, from D-Day to the Rhine River, with more All i e d a r m i es, than any other unit in the European Theater of Operations - yet not even their fellow American soldiers were aware of their presence. After Douglas Fairbanks Jr., USNR, completed a tour of England and its special forces installat io ns , t he H ol ly wood star convinced the Navy brass to train an elite unit that eventually evolved into the only Army force of its kind - a top-secret band of unknown heroes. These elite soldiers counted among their number designer Bill Blass and pa in te r E lls wor th Kelly, and were inspired by Hilton Howell Railey, the 'P.T. Barnum of Deception'. The Special Troops' mission was twofold: to deceive the German army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops and materiel tha n th ey a ctu all y di d an d, e ven more heroically, to draw enemy fire on their position to allow other units to advance free of lethal resistance. Through the art of camouflage, sonic deception, and illusion this extraordinary troops of brave, ingen ious men save d cou ntles s Ame rica n lives - while sometimes losing their own. From the use of inflatable rubber tanks and howitzers to elaborate sound effects, fake radio transmissions, special effects artillery fire, and other elements of stage craft , th ese s hadow soldie rs put thei r lives on the line for their brother soldiers and for their country - only to disappear from history and memory." 8 Leckie, Robert. DELIVERED FROM EVIL: THE SAGA OF WORLD WAR II.
New York Harper & Row 1987 0060158123 / 9780060158125 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." 9 Malone, Richard S. A WORLD IN FLAMES, 1944-1945. A PORTRAIT OF WAR: PART TWO.
Toronto Collins 1984 0002172798 / 9780002172790 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
318 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "In 1944, when this book begins, Richard Malone had been transferred from the Italian front back to England to take part in the Normandy landings. Trained before the war both as a soldier and a journalist, Malone had been seconded in 1940 from his regiment Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as Staff Secretary to Col. J.L. Ralston, Canada's Minister of Defence. (Now) poised for D-Day, he held staff appointments at both Canadian Army and British 21st Army Group Headquarters and he was given charge of all Canadian Army Press and Psychological Warfare service in the field. The Canadians accounted for nearly a third of the forces landed on D-Day and Malone's description of the invasion, the battles of Normandy, the liberation of Paris and Brussels make fascinating reading. Also from his unique perspective Malone has much of interest to say about the great controversial issues of the times: Montgomery's leadership, Patton's gap, the rivalry between the British and American high commands, the Battle of the Bulge, Arnheim and the reason for its failure and others. In 1944 when the battle for Europe was clearly won, Malone was chosen to go out to the Pacific and establish relations with General MacArthur. He witnessed the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri and was the first Canadian in Japan. He was in charge of the liberation of Canadian prisoners in Japan, China and Manchuria. His talks with Churchill, Alanbrooke, Montgomery, MacArthur, Beaverbrook, Ralston and other after the war add to our understanding of the part that Canada played in the Second World War." CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY., McDonough, James Lee.
10 McDonough, James Lee. CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY.
Knoxville University of Tennessee Press 1984 0870494252 / 9780870494253 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "In the wake of the bloodshed at Chickamauga, the struggle for Chattanooga became a decisive engagement of the Civil War. McDonough reconstructs the siege and battles as they appeared to both Rebels and Yankees, giving the reader a front-row seat at one of the major dramas in American history. The tale culminates in the complex bid for Missionary Ridge, which ended with the collapse of the Confederate line at its center. Reversing their situation in one final, dramatic hour, Union forces emerged victorious. The Rebels forfeited the advantage offered by the triumph of Chickamauga and now found the tables turned. With Chattanooga in their grasp, the Federals stood in a position to carry the fight deep into the South. The river and railroads both made the city important as a natural passageway that provided the Union with a staging base for military operations. The Rebels, on the other hand, found their railway communications crippled. The Confederacy had earlier been split along the Mississippi River; now it was to be severed by a second line that passed from Nashville to Atlanta via Chattanooga." Very light edge wear, small bump at top edge of front board, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Ian Allan, London, 1991, 2nd edition.
294 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711019118 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The term Blitzkrieg, or lightning war, was coined by the Germans, but has been part of the English language for the past 50 years. It r eflects the aim of armies throughout history to achieve quick and decisive victory. As this book describes, Blitzkrieg originated in the deadlock of trench warfare on the Western Front 1915-17 and the efforts by both sides to break it. T h e i n t e r n a l combustion engine, both in the air and on the ground, provided the means and fast moving mechanised forces closely supported by air power were the result. Theory and experimentation in the 1920s and 1930s gave way to the Blitzk ri eg ca mp ai gn s of 1 939-42, which left Germany master of Continental Europe and much of western Russia. The Allies eventually found the antidote and applied the concept themselves during the latter part of the war. Since then Blitzkrieg has be en a t t he for efr on t o f I sraeli strategy and dominated both Soviet and Western military thought on conventional operations during the Cold War years. Today it provides the background to conventional arms control....This new edition has be en s ign if ican tly exp ande d a nd b roug ht up to date in order to provide an even more comprehensive account of this phenomenon of 20th century warfare." 13 Mitcham, Samuel W., Jr., and von Stauffenberg, Friedrich. THE BATTLE OF SICILY.
New York Orion 1991 0517575256 / 9780517575253 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good
367 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "....the story of Germany's 'Dunkirk' - a successful evacuation that allowed forty thousand troops to escape to Italy, where they later fought the Allies to a bloody stalemate....the Allies lost a significant opportunity in Sicily when a one-armed German general, Hans Valentin Hube, the commander of the XIV Panzer Corps, stepped in to mount a brilliant strategic defense. With only four divisions, he successfully tied down two Allied armies, holding off the invaders for thirty-eight crucial days and then escaping with nearly his entire command. Meanwhile, the Nazis were able to occupy Italy - whose government had only recently capitulated - thereby dooming the Allies to a prolonged and fierce battle of attrition up the Italian peninsula. The authors recount the campaign from the point of view of the Axis strategy - something no English-language book has ever done - and argue persuasively that the Allies wasted a chance for a total victory that might well have shortened the war." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very slight fading to spine color, minor rubbing.

The final hours pulsate with tension as every man in the trenches hopes to escape the melancholy distinction of being the last to die in World War I. The Allied generals knew the fighting would end precisely at 11:00 a.m., yet in the final hours they flung men against an already beaten Germany. The result? Eleven thousand casualties suffered - more than during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Why? 470 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and maps/battle plans. "Antwerp, Leopold Canal, Woensdrecht, Breskens Pocket, Walcheren Island - these place names live on in the memories of World War Two veterans of Canadian infantry and armoured divisions who fought in the mud and wet against an unbending enemy. It was 1944 and the Canadian army, with divisions from the U.K., U.S., and Poland, had been given the difficult task of liberating the port of Antwerp and clearing both banks of the Scheldt River. The bitter Battle of the Scheldt lasted 86 days, and took the lives of more than 12,000 Allied soldiers. Brigadier General Denis Whitaker was a lieutenant-colonel in that battle, commanding the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. For this book, he interviewed more than 150 men who fought alongside him on the Dutch polders. Meticulously researched in Europe and Canada, (this book) does not tread lightly on accepted notions of military historians. Revised with a new afterword, this important true story of nineteen- and twenty-year-old soldiers, many of whom died miserably on the sodden polders of Zeeland, deserves to be read again and again." 18 Whiting, Charles. THE LAST ASSAULT: THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE REASSESSED.
Leo Cooper, London, (1994).
238 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, map. "It has generally been assumed by historians of the Second World War that the Americans were caught completely unawares by the last great German offensive - the drive into the Ardennes in December, 1944, known as the Battle of the Bulge. But were they in fact caught unawares? In this remarkable reappraisal of those hectic days which preceded the last Christmas of the War, Charles Whiting argues that the answer is very probably that they were not...What is certain is that ever since the end of the Second World War the guardians of the files relating to the Battle of the Bulge in the United States have been most unwilling to permit any examination thereof - this in spite of the Freedom of Information Act. So the author raises yet another question: 'Was somebody trying to cover something up and if so why?' On the basis of such information as he has been able to cull from those, as yet unsorted, files and on information provided by the numerous survivors of the battle with whom he has been in contact, (the author) attempts to answer these questions..."
