PAST TENSE: CHARLIE'S STORY., Hobbs, Charlie.
1 Hobbs, Charlie. PAST TENSE: CHARLIE'S STORY.
Burnstown, Ontario General Store Publishing House 1994 1896182119 / 9781896182117 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
208 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, map. "Like many of his friends, Charlie Hobbs was eager to join up when (WWII) broke out in 1939. Who wanted to take a bank manager's course when you could fly with the RCAF? After qualifying as an airgunner, Charlie sailed for England in 1941 and spent the next two years flying over Europe with the #83 and #207 squadrons. Leaves spent in London and with Aunt Jennie in Scotland provided welcome respites from the terrors of war for Charlie and his chum, Cam, and both looked as if they would be two of the lucky ones. Then Cam was shot down. Six months later, Charlie, too, was shot down in a fiery crash that killed his pilot. Reunited in the same POW camp, Charlie and Cam found themselves forced to plumb depths of resourcefulness they never knew they had, in circumstances they never knew existed. 'Charlie's Story' is all about hope, friendship and the strength of the human spirit." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor rubbing.

THE AVRO LANCASTER., Mason, Francis K.
4 Mason, Francis K. THE AVRO LANCASTER.
Aston, (Bourne End, Bucks, 1989).
437 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos (some aerial), maps, reproductions, fold-out color cutaway. "...the most extensive chronicle of a British bomber ever undertaken - of more than half a million words - describes how the Lancaster came into being and how it fulfilled the faith placed in it by those who planned it. From the consuming belief, espoused by Trenchard between the Wars, that the heavy bomber was the raison d'etre of the R oyal Air Force, to the realisation that Britain, faced in 1936 with the likelihood of war with Germany, was still without an aircraft that could hit the enemy capital with worthwhile bombs. Thus was developed the famous trio of true heavy b o m b e r s , the Stirling, Halifax and Lancaster. And by the end of that war, the Lancaster equipped 60 out of Bomber Command's 80 heavy bomber squadrons; more than 1,3000 out of 1,850 British heavy bombers were Lancasters...the Author has mad e r ef er en ce t o al l the outstanding raids undertaken in an extraordinary compendium of individual 'histories' of every Lancaster built (over 7,000 of them), and mention is made of several thousand individual crew members - separately indexed f or eas e o f r efe ren ce . Th e book contains hundreds of photographs (many from previously untapped sources) as well as maps and diagrams, and a separate Chapter - including cutaway and general arrangements drawings, executed by the Author in c olo ur - de scri bes the Lanc ast er in considerable detail." Contents: Towards a Strategic Bombing Force; The Reluctant Transition: Farewell to Biplanes; Heavyweights - With Two Engines; Odds Too Great; The Lancaster is Born; The First Lancaste r Sq uad rons; The Comi ng o f the Pat hfi nder s; No Corner of the Reich; Special People for a Special Job; The Battle of the Ruhr; The Battle of Hamburg; The Battle of Berlin; Nuremburg and Overlord; More Special Operations; In Support of the Ar mies; The Last Six M onths ; The Trans ition fro m War ; Lancasters in the Laboratory; In Other Air Forces; They Also Served; The Lancaster Described; Appendices - Deployment of Manchester and Lancaster Units; Awards of the Victoria Cross and th e Cons picuo us Gal lantry Medal ; Lanc aster a nd Man chest er Pro duction, Allocation and Service; Lancasters with High Raid Tallies; Glossary; Bibliography. THE NUREMBERG RAID 30-31 MARCH 1944. REVISED EDITION., Middlebrook, Martin.
5 Middlebrook, Martin. THE NUREMBERG RAID 30-31 MARCH 1944. REVISED EDITION.
London Penguin 1986 0140081143 / 9780140081145 Revised Edition, 2nd Printing Soft Cover Very Good
367 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w maps, diagrams, photographs. "On the night of 30-31 March 1944 RAF Bomber Command took off on what should have been a routine 'maximum effort' raid on Nuremberg. It turned into a major disaster, with Bomber Command suffering its heaviest losses of the war: of the 779 bombers taking part 96 were missing and, due to adverse weather conditions, Nuremberg was only lightly damaged. (This) is a detailed re-enactment of that operation, based on extensive research in English and German archives, and interviews and correspondence with many of the senior officers who planned the raid, together with some 380 RAF and Luftwaffe aircrew who took part, and German civilians in the areas that were bombed. The result is a meticulous and dramatic account of a turning point in the bomber war, as well as a moving record of the courage and sacrifice of the bomber crews. This revised edition contains an important new chapter in which (the author) comments on the dramatic suggestion, made since the original book was published, that the identity of Nuremberg as the target and details of the route to be used were deliberately disclosed to the German by British Intelligence as part of a more important intelligence operation." Interior - small edge tear with crease on page leaf 69/70 - archivally taped, very light browning, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, soft corner crease on front cover, one crease on spine.

Crecy, (Somerton, Somerset, 1992), reprint.
256 pp, lg 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0947554203 B&w photos, maps, drawings. "With the British air defence system supreme by day, the Luftwaffe turned to concentrate their attention towards nocturnal bombing missions on major cities and ports. For this purpose they perfected the technique to become known as 'pathfinding' - the illumination of the target area by a special force as a forerunner to an intense bombing raid. This vital role was to be played by German y ' s b e st known bomber unit, Kampfgruppe 100. Within a detailed and full history of this unit from 1939 until 1941, comes a fascinating account of its operations over Britain, as night after night German bombers went about the systematic destru ct io n o f Br itain's major cities..."
