MOSQUITO AT WAR., Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken.
2 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken. MOSQUITO AT WAR.
Ian Allan, London, 1989, reprint.
144 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711004749 "From the outset the Mosquito was a daring concept. That an unarmed bomber, constructed almost wholly of wood and relying on pure speed, could evade the immensely powerful air defences of Nazi Germany by night, let alone by day, was completely against contemporary Air Force thinking and war experience. The result was an aircraft which became the most successful fighter and bomber of World War II. Extreme versatility led to i t s use in a wide range of operational roles - day and night bomber, night fighter, intruder, Pathfinder, shipbuster, bomber support, reconnaissance and a dozen others. Mosquitos served too in practically every theatre of war from Britain to Bur ma . I n this book the author has recaptured the unique appeal of the Mosquito to the fighting airmen of World War II and the high spirits and elan that distinguished Mosquito Squadrons everywhere. First-hand accounts of operations by the men who fl ew th e aircraft are illuminated by a remarkable collection of over 200 photographs. They depict the Mosquito in all its various guises and roles. They show, too, the patient, painstaking and frequently hazardous work of the ground crews who, for th eir pa rt, also shared in the Mosquito spirit." Book is cocked, very small tear (archivally taped) with crease at top of rear free endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor wear/light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and fla p-fol ds, ligh t r ubbing. Very Good/Very Good

But from that day 'attack' was the watchword of the submariner - and attack they did throughout the two world wars, with such dazzling success that they became one of Britain's most potent tactical weapons...The deeds of many unsung he r o e s a r e recorded (in this book), but especially those of the colourful and valiant commanders whose names are etched in history: Commander Max Horton, hero of the Baltic campaign, Lieutenant Commander Martin Nasmith, 'The Terror of the Marm ar a' , Li e ut en an t Commander Wanklyn , who scored a record number of hits in World War Two before his 'Upholder' was tragically lost with all hands aboard; Lieutenants Donald Cameron and B.C.G. 5 Delve, Ken. D-DAY: THE AIR BATTLE.
Ramsbury Crowood Press 2004 1861267045 / 9781861267047 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps/plans. "6 June 1944 saw the Allied invasion of occupied Europe - one of the riskiest military operations of World War Two. The part played by air power in the success of the operation was crucial. This was the greatest concentration of striking power ever seen: 12,000 combat aircraft. Fighter-bombers such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and Hawker Typhoon bombed, strafed and rocketed tactical targets with great accuracy, while strategic bombers, escorted by hundreds of fighters, targeted bridges, marshalling yards, coastal guns and military stores. Other aircraft flew sophisticated decoy operations and hundreds of transports dropped paratroops or released gliders. In this, the only full-length book on the subject, Ken Delve examines the air campaign from the pre-invasion bombing strategy that prepared the battlefield to the massive air effort that accompanied the actual assault and the air umbrella during the vital weeks following the landings. Originally published in 1994, (it) has been substantially enlarged, re-illustrated and completely reset (providing) comprehensive coverage of this vital air campaign." 141 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps, etc. ISBN 1840150017 "This is an account of one small cog in the machinery of the Second World War - the story of the RAF bomber airfield at Downham Market in Norfolk . Every night for three long years young men of RAF Bomber Command flew from this East Anglian airfield in their Stirlings, Lancasters and Mosquitoes to pound into dust the might of Nazi Germany. Their contribution towards winning the war w a s c r u c ial, but the cost in precious lives and equipment was high: 160 aircraft and nearly 900 airmen were lost on operations. Downham Market was notable in a number of ways, not least for the fact that two posthumous Victoria Crosses were wo n by it s pi lo ts (out of a total of only twenty-one for the whole of Bomber Command), and that it was the second of fifteen airfields in England to be equipped with the life-saving fog dispersal device known as FIDO. It was from Downham Mark e t t ha t t h e R AF 's las t bombing sortie of the European air war was flown on 2/3 May 1945. Between 1942 and 1945 at various times the airfield hosted six bomber squadrons: Nos 214, 218 and 623 were Main Force squadrons in No 3 Group, and then f rom Mar ch 1 94 4 No s 5 71, 608 and 635 were a part of the RAF's elite No 8 (Pathfinder) Group. 'Strike Hard' is not so much a chronological history, but a microcosm of Bomber Command during the war years. Supported by more than fifty photog rap hs, maps and pla ns, e ach chap ter f ocuses on a separate aspect of life on the airfield, and of the bomber operations flown from there. The author has drawn on a number of sources, ranging from official to published and private material, to give a f ascin ating dep iction of a bom ber ai rfield at war." Burnstown, Ontario General Store Publishing House 1994 1896182119 / 9781896182117 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
208 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, map. "Like many of his friends, Charlie Hobbs was eager to join up when (WWII) broke out in 1939. Who wanted to take a bank manager's course when you could fly with the RCAF? After qualifying as an airgunner, Charlie sailed for England in 1941 and spent the next two years flying over Europe with the #83 and #207 squadrons. Leaves spent in London and with Aunt Jennie in Scotland provided welcome respites from the terrors of war for Charlie and his chum, Cam, and both looked as if they would be two of the lucky ones. Then Cam was shot down. Six months later, Charlie, too, was shot down in a fiery crash that killed his pilot. Reunited in the same POW camp, Charlie and Cam found themselves forced to plumb depths of resourcefulness they never knew they had, in circumstances they never knew existed. 'Charlie's Story' is all about hope, friendship and the strength of the human spirit." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor rubbing.

255 pp, 11 3/4" H. Over 200 maps/battle plans in shades of black, white and red. "(T)his book provides a continuous, chronological narrative, linking the theatres and showing how each affected the others, and the way in which the protagonists were forced to adjust the deployment of armies and resources between them. Each two-page spread describes and maps a particular phase in the conflict, linking its position in the order of events to previous and subsequent topics. Graphic keys supply at-a-glance locations in time and place, while a cursor bar shows the phase of the overall conflict. The maps have been designed to complement and amplify the chronological text, presenting not only the main events but also showing peripheral and incidental information to aid the reader in forming a clear picture of the course of the war. Areas depicted have been chosen with care, to include all the zones and their implicit factors that impinged upon the decision-making of the com-manders in the field as well as their political masters. Harmondsworth Viking 1985 0670801372 / 9780670801374 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
804 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "Bomber Command's campaign started on the very first day of the Second World War and ended within a few hours of the final victory in Europe five and a half years later. It was an attempt to win a war in Europe by strategic bombing on such an enormous scale that historians are only now beginning to piece together the finer details of the individual raids. There have been many books about Bomber Command, but Martin Middlebrook, the aviation historian, and his research colleague Chris Everitt are the first to compile the full story of this fascinating campaign in reference form. They undertook the gargantuan task not only of documenting every Bomber Command operation but also of obtaining information from local archives in Germany, Italy and the occupied countries on the effects of the raids. Little of this material has been published previously, and never before have the two sides of Bomber Command's war been brought together in this way. (It) is sure to become the standard work of reference on this extraordinary campaign." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one pade with small wrinkle at bottom edge. THE VAGABOND FLEET: A CHRONICLE OF THE NORTH PACIFIC SEALING SCHOONER TRADE., Murray, Peter.

Victoria, B.C. Sono Nis Press 1988 1550390007 / 9781550390001 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good Maurice Chadwick.
260 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers. Sepiatone photographs, colour ship portraits. "This gripping history of Canada's unknown seal hunt is a saga of greed and subterfuge, of bumbling diplomatic intrigue that almost led to war. At the same time it is the story of brave men who battled stormy seas in aging ships, many of which had seen better days. Countless lives were lost. Many of the victims were native Indians recruited with their canoes and spears from villages along the west coast of Vancouver Island. The effect of these tragedies on the Indian population and the economic impact of the fur seal hunt on their way of life is examined here for the first time. Threaded throughout the book are stories of the colourful characters who skippered and manned the sealing schooners. After years of acrimonious negotiations, a four-nation treaty was finally signed in 1911 which saved the fur seals from extinction. It was a landmark agreement in the conservation of marine life which set the pattern for a number of other international treaties over the years." Dust jacket has small wrinkle at top edge of rear flap, very light rubbing/soiling on rear panel.

"From the withdrawal from Dunkirk in 1940 to the Allied invasion of Germany four and a half years later, RAF Bomber Command was the only British force to s trike directly at the enemy homeland. It was a truly cosmopolitan body, including men from Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, the United States, neutral Ireland, occupied nations of Europe, India and other countries in the Briti s h E m p i r e . Behind each of these were family and friends, whose stories form an integral part of this book. Drawing on contemporary letters and diaries, later reflections and personal accounts, together with a wide range of interviews, this m ov i ng a nd h ig hl y readable book graphically examines the experiences of RAF aircrew in action. It focuses, too, on the complexities of their wartime relationships and the impact of their part in the war on the loved ones they left behind. " Min or wr ink lin g a t t op/ bottom of spine.
