KHARTOUM 1885: GENERAL GORDON'S LAST STAND. OSPREY MILITARY CAMPAIGN SERIES 23., Featherstone, Don. (Donald). General editor David G. Chandler.
1 Featherstone, Don. (Donald). General editor David G. Chandler. KHARTOUM 1885: GENERAL GORDON'S LAST STAND. OSPREY MILITARY CAMPAIGN SERIES 23.
London Osprey 1993 185532301X / 9781855323018 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+ Cilla Eurich.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H). Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photos, maps, battle plans, reproductions, uniform studies. "The fall of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon at the hand of the Mahdi's army constituted one of the most colourful and controversial episodes of Britain's military history - a seemingly unfeeling Imperial government had 'let down' one of the nation's heroes. Here, Donald Featherstone, well known for his many books on military subjects and wargaming in particular, focuses especially on the battles fought by the relief columns." "The Osprey Campaign Series presents concise, authoritative accounts of the great conflicts of history. Each volume begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign stragegy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages of the campaign. Each volume concludes with a brief guide to the battlefield today, and detailed notes for wargamers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - area of faint dis-coloration of two title letters on front cover.

"Sir Henry Morton Stanley, greatest of African explorers and one of the most fascinating of late Victori an adventurers, is known popularly for his celebrated meeting with David Livingstone. But Stanley is by any reckoning a key figure in the history of the European penetration of the African continent. He was also a man of intriguing psycho l o g i c a l c omplexity - a complexity which Frank McLynn probes with sensitivity and understanding....Born into poverty and illegitimacy, with an infancy spent in a Welsh workhouse, (Stanley) survived a series of incredible adventures at sea and i n th e US A to em erge as a journalist of talent after the American Civil War. His coverage of the British Ethiopian expedition to chastise Emperor Theodore brought him to the attention of James Gordon Bennett, proprietor of the 'New York Heral d T ri bun e' wh o com m iss ioned him to find Livingstone in darkest Africa. His historic meeting with Livingstone at Ujiji in 1871....was the scoop of the century. It brought him fame and fortune and the opportunity to carry out the greatest si ngle fe at i n t he w ho le o f Afri can exploration: crossing the continent from east to west and following the Congo to its Atlantic mouth. Behind these (and other) monumental achievements was a man who was a pathological liar, with sado-masochi stic tend encie s, w ho hi mse lf oc cu pied a blurred middle-ground between fantasy and reality. All this is the material of Frank McLynn's masterly study...." 5 Palmer, Alan. THE BANNER OF BATTLE: THE STORY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR.
London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1987 0297790420 / 9780297790426 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
289 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(P)uts the myths and preconceptions about The Charge of the Light Brigade, Florence Nightingale, the war guilt of Stratford de Redcliffe, the rivalry between Lord Cardigan and Lord Lucan and the patriotic fervour of the English into perspective. Military and naval events are woven into the context of Great Power politics and diplomacy. The Crimean War, often viewed simply as a dramatic incident in the Eastern Question, emerges as a decisive campaign which lowered the stature of both defeated Russia and non-belligerent Austria, thereby changing the power structure of Europe. (This) is the first comprehensive interpretation of the subject stressing the European and Baltic angles, and so bringing the Crimean War clearly and astutely into focus."
