A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553., Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee.
1 Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1930 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Good Very Good
242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in America having a Literary or Historic Interest", "Contributions to the Literature of the United States" and an Index. Book is lightly cocked, light browning to edges of text block, light edge wear, very small old ink mark on bottom of text block, rubbing with slight color loss on covers, cloth is split on hinges - repaired, small edge tear on free front endaper - archivally taped. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny chip at top of spine, slight fading to spine and flap-fold color.

Dundurn, Toronto, 2009, first edition.
236 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781550028539 "At a turning point in his life, George Fetherling embarked on an adventure to sail round the wrold on one of the last of the tramp freighters. The four-month voyage carried him 30,000 nautical mil es from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. Written with dash, colour, and droll humour, (his) narrative is peopled by a rich cast of characters, from the Forei g n L e g ionnaires of French Polnesia to the 'raskol' gangs of Papua New Guinea. The author captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship - the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramp ed q u ar te rs seem to exaggerate. But the routine of loneliness or tranquility is punctuated by moments of near-panic - shipboard fires, furniture-smashing storms, even a brush with pirates in the Straits of Malacca." 602 pp, 10 1/2" H. Red cloth covered boards, black title block with gilt lettering/decoration on spine. Original publisher's cardboard slipcase with titling on spine and one side. Black, white & cream illustrations (several fold-out) plus colour fold-out map (collated). Title continues: "To which is sub-joined a comparative view of the manners and customs of several of the Indian nations of North and South America." "Heriot went to Quebec in 1792 as a civil servant and became deputy postmaster general of Canada in 1799. Until 1816 he remained in Canada, travelling at least as far west as Niagara Falls, perhaps Detroit, and to some extent in the United States, sketching along the way. His legacy - his water-colors and this book, an unsurpassed intimate history of 'the lakes, the rivers, and cataracts, the villages, farm-houses, and townships of Canada'. Although British reviewers of the day were unimpressed by richly detailed descriptions of a mere colony, the extent and precision of Heriot's account is a virtue one hundred and sixty years later. He wrote at length of each of the major waterways in Upper and Lower Canada which were, as James Talman points out in his introduction, 'of first importance in the life of the people as a means of travel and a source of water power'. And his sketches of buildings, particularly in Quebec, are invaluable since many of those buildings were already falling into ruin when Heriot saw them." Very minor wrinkling at top og spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Slipcase has very light edge wear/rubbing, tiny slight puncture on one side, slight bump at top of spine.

WHO SANK SURCOUF? THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE PRIDE OF THE FRENCH NAVY., Rusbridger, James.
13 Rusbridger, James. WHO SANK SURCOUF? THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE PRIDE OF THE FRENCH NAVY.
Century, London, 1991.
209 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0712639756 B&w illustrations. "At 3pm on the afternoon of 12 February 1942, the French Submarine 'Surcouf', then the largest submarine in service with any navy, sailed from Bermuda bou nd for Tahiti via the Panama Canal. On board were 129 French officers and men, and three members of a Royal Navy liaison team. From the moment she left Bermuda, 'Surcouf' was never seen again. Not a single scrap of wreckage, body, or anyth i n g r e m otely connected with this giant vessel was ever found. (She) simply disappeared. On the night of 2 July, 1941 'Surcouf', docked in Devenport, was forcibly taken over by the Royal Navy in an operation that resulted in three deaths and ma ny i n ju ri es . A motley collection of Breton fishermen were press-ganged into geting 'Surcouf' seaworthy again. Too slow and cumbersome to serve in home waters, (she) was sent off to Canada to escort convoys across the Atlantic, but almost im med iat el y r epo rts circulated that 'Surcouf' had sunk some of the ships in the first convoy she was guarding. When the British liaison officer warned his superiors 'Surcouf' was a menace and should not be kept in service, he was accused of cow ardi ce a nd repl aced by Sub Lieutenant Roger Burney, a young, naive officer who had enjoyed a long homosexual relationship with the singer Peter Pears and the composer Benjamin Britten, and was later to have 'War Requiem' dedicated to his me mory. Aft er ta kin g par t in the unauthorised seizure of the Vichy-held islands of St Pierre and Miquelon in December 1941, which greatly angered Roosevelt and embarrassed Churchill, 'Surcouf' was ordered to sail for Tahiti. Burney warned the A dmiral ty tha t (her ) cr ew wer e unr elia ble, and that they were openly talking about mutinying and defecting either to France or Martinique. However, the Admiralty insisted 'Surcouf' sail - it was never seen again. The vanishing of 'Surcouf' b ecame o ne of t he most cont roversi al aff airs to sour relations between the Allies with accusations that it had been deliberately sunk by the British or American navy." Light browning to pages, browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling a t bottom of spin e. Dust jacke t has mi nor edg e wri nkling at op/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good
