MY LIFE IN ART., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
6 Bemelmans, Ludwig. MY LIFE IN ART.
New York Harper & Brothers 1958 Hard Cover Very Good Good Ludwig Bemelmans.
64 pp + 32 pp of colour reproductions of gouaches and oils done between 1954 and 1958, 12 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations throughout text, plus tipped-in colour frontispiece and one other, followed by colour plates. Ludwig Bemelmans was famous for his 'Madeline' books. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans." Dust jacket has light browning, a few small edge chips, is price-clipped, one or two small edge tears with creases, light soiling/rubbing, light water stains at top/bottom edge of spine.

HISTORY OF COLOR IN PAINTING. WITH NEW PRINCIPLES OF COLOR EXPRESSION., Birren, Faber.
7 Birren, Faber. HISTORY OF COLOR IN PAINTING. WITH NEW PRINCIPLES OF COLOR EXPRESSION.
Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, 1965, second printing.
372 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Faber Birren, the noted color authority, surveys the color theories of the past and analyzes the paletes and techniques of painters from the Renaissance to the present. Showing the relationship between color theory and practice, he sets forth a new art of color based on modern scientific research in human perception. The first part of the books traces the development of color theory, presenting the views of such thinkers as Leonardo da Vi nci, Newton, Goethe, Brewster, Hering, Chevreul, Rood, Ostwald, and Munsell. The palettes used by many of the great painters are described and listed in detail. Modern color theory and color effects based on human perception are fully expl a i n e d a n d illustrated. A unqiue chart of artists' color samples duplicates visually the palettes of da Vinci, El Greco, Rembrandt, Turner, the Impressionists, and the Abstract Impressionists, enabling the painter of today to match the color ef fe ct s of th es e painters. The second part offers a comprehensive history of painting as seen through the discerning eyes of a color specialist; it contains a wealth of reference material which supports the creative principles outlined in the fi rst se ct ion . T his book is richly illustrated with 32 handsome color plates showing great paintings and more than 500 black-and-white illustrations, including 80 reproductions of paintings depicting famous artists and their palettes." Th e tw o pa ge " Col or C ha rt o f Pi gments and Palettes" is complete. Small scuff to cloth on bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has four edge tears - two larger (one with creases) - all archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling, light rub bing. Ver y Goo d+/G ood

Her father introduced her to art and artists at an early age - Emily Carr, Frederick Varley, A.Y. Jackson - and her mother instilled in her a love for nature and humble work. Jackson, Kathleen Fenwick, Alex Colville, Charles Comfort, Douglas Duncan, Miller Brittain, Frederick Varley, Tom Thomson, David Milne, Donald Buchanan, and many others promient in the world of Canadian art add colour to a sensitive biography by one of Canada's great artists." The present exhibition attempts to give a balanced representation of the entire period. Howerever, a period of over sixty years in the rapidly changing world of the nineteenth century could hardly show anything approaching uniformity of style. "Canada's finest post-Impressionist painter, James Wilson Morrice freed himself from a stern, Presbyterian upbringing in Montreal and spend most of his adult life in France. Small in size, his exquisite canvases and panels are remarkable for their delicacy and subtle harmony of colour. (This series) discusses the life and works of significant Canadian artists and their contribution to art in Canada. Each book is written by an expert in the field of Canadian art history and comprises, with some exceptions, an essay, illustrations of selected works, a list of principal exhibitions, and a bibliography." Terrail, Paris, 1995.
223 pp, 4to (11 13/16" H), soft cover with self-flaps. ISBN 287939080X 164 colour reproductions. "Gauguin, the leading figure of the Pont-Even group, inspired the Nabis through his influence on the young painter Paul Serusier. In the Breton vill age where they spent the summer of 1888, Serusier, under Gauguin's direction, painted a landscape in pure colours that verged on the abstract. When they returned to Paris and showed the picture to their friends, Maurice Denis, Vallotton, Vuilla r d a nd Bonnard, the effect was so magical that it became known as 'The Talisman'. The painting was at odds with the academic teaching of the time and they saw it as a veritable revelation; hence the name 'Nabis' from 'Nebiim', Hebrew for prophet . ( T hi s book) traces the genesis of this revelation in the context of a survey of the intellectual and artistic climate in Paris at the turn of the century, a period that also embraced Symbolism, Japonism, and the originality of a group of artis ts wh os e c ommon characteristic was the will to apply the modernist ideal in every art form, including poster design, theatre programmes and stage sets." Toronto University of Toronto Press 1983 0802055842 / 9780802055842 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good George Heriot.
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w reproductions. "George Heriot (1759-1839), a Scot, is best known as a skilled landscape watercolourist and as the contentious deputy postmaster general of British North America from 1800 to 1816. He was also a travel writer and a poet. In this volume, a combination of biography and art history, Gerald Finaly presents, for the first time, a rounded picture of Heriot, revealing his motives and ideals while also illuminating the texture of life in Canada during the early years of settlement. In describing Heriot's several roles as artist, administrator, patriot, spy, Fnley presents a portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman whose superficial desires were for an active public life but whose deeper yearnings were for a life of contemplation. This volume serves to recognize Heriot's artistic achievement and to accord him the place he deserves in the history of Canadian art and the country itself." Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1986, first edition.
410 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297788957 Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "(C)harts Emma's life from her birth as the daughter of a Cheshire blacksmith to her death fifty years later in Calais in circumstances of poverty and neglect. (Fraser) deals in particular depth with the Italian period of Emma's life, when - as the wife of Sir William Hamilton, the affable, erudite British Minister at Naples - she became an intimate friend of the Queen of Naples and s at to all the portrait painters of Europe. The licentious climate of Naples provided an easy setting for Emma's famous romance with Lord Nelson: London Society's reaction to the affair is chronicled in fascinating detail. Flora Fraser sheds n e w l i ght on the shifting relationship between Emma, Nelson and Sir William at Paradise Merton, their home in Surrey, and explores Emma's later life - her strange, will-o'-the-wisp existence after the deaths of her husband and her lover. The a ut ho r h as h ad access to private manuscripts and illustrative material in England and Italy, and her extensive use of contemporary sources such as letters and diaries bring the period vividly to life."
