THE OXFORDSHIRE AND BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 43rd/52nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Booth, Philip. Introduction by Lt. General Sir Brian Horrocks.
1 Booth, Philip. Introduction by Lt. General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE OXFORDSHIRE AND BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 43rd/52nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1971, first edition.
158 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520290 B&w photographs, reproductions, music to Regimental March. Errata sheet tipped in on half-title page. "Since their formation in the mid-eighteenth century the 43rd and 52nd Regim ents of Foot have had a variety of changes in title, achieving in 1908 the name by which they will always be remembered, that of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, although the old cherished numbers, by which the regiments w e r e k n o w n before the Cardwell Reforms, have always b een unofficially used by the regular battalions. In 1803 they were the first regiments to become light infantry in Sir John Moore's Light Brigade, and achieved further fame in the Penins ul ar W ar as p ar t of Craufurd's Light Division. Perhaps the 52 nd's most famous success was at Waterloo, when, under Sir John Colborne's skilful handling, they made the famous charge which carried the day for the allies. With customary skill an d c our age suc cee din g generations in the Regiment lived up to their illustrious predecessors, particularly in the First and Second World Wars; their stand on the Somme in 1918 against the full weight of the German army, and their part in th e gl ider -bor ne l a ndin gs a t D- Da y are only two examples of the fighting skill which has made this regiment famous. Together with the 60th Rifles and the Rifle Brigade they are now part of the Royal Green Jackets - indeed a happy issue out o f the affl ictio n of po st wa r org anisa tio n." Minor browning to pages, small paper pull at fore-edge of front endpapers, light browning to edges of textblock, book is lightly cocked, small bump at bottom edge of front board and at bottom corn er of both b oards, mino r e dge we ar, li ght wr inkl ing at top/bottom of spine. 2 Cannan, Joanna. OXFORDSHIRE. THE COUNTY BOOKS SERIES.
London Robert Hale 1975 Hard Cover Very Good- Good-
276 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs, fold-out map at rear. "For all the beauty and variety which it offers, Oxfordshire has been always overshadowed by the fame of its county town; visitors speed along the great roads which lead to 'the dreaming city', ignorant alike of the lovely lost stone villages of the north and the remote valleys hidden among the beechwoods of the south-west. Everyone knows the Thames, but Oxfordshire has other rivers: 'gentle' Evenlode, sparkling Windrush, reedy Thame. The towers of Oxford are world-famous, but the county has Norman churches by the dozen and, though her castles are fallen, a wealth of old manor houses and ancient farmsteads, exquisitely grouped. In this book the author, born and bred in Oxford, has endeavoured to recapture the atmosphere of lost splendour which pervades the shire, to be wandered through and dreamed in rather than methodically toured." Minor browning on endpapers, tiny bump to bottom corner of approx. pages 103 to 130, light browning to edges of textblock - tiny stain on top of tect block and on fore-edge, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate browning, moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small chips, 1" chip missing from top of spine, tear at top of rear hinge with old tape on inside - now protected in removable mylar sleeve.

Throughout this fascinating offshore and off-centre island - fr om Cornwall's spectacular Land's End to Scotland's lonely northern outpost of John o' Groats - the dramatic and magnificent story of Britain has always been punctuated by the quirky, the irreverent and the downright dotty. Farther north thin gs m a y ge t co lder, but they're still crazy with it. There's the highest pub in England at Yorkshire's Tan Hill and a Lake District lighthouse that is miles from the sea. And how about Scotland, with a pineapple-shaped house and the world's best worst poet? Who wanted to take a bank manager's course when you could fly with the RCAF? After qualifying as an airgunner, Charlie sailed for England in 1941 and spent the next two years flying over Europe with the #83 and #207 squadrons. Leaves spent in London and with Aunt Jennie in Scotland provided welcome respites from the terrors of war for Charlie and his chum, Cam, and both looked as if they would be two of the lucky ones. Then Cam was shot down. Six months later, Charlie, too, was shot down in a fiery crash that killed his pilot. Reunited in the same POW camp, Charlie and Cam found themselves forced to plumb depths of resourcefulness they never knew they had, in circumstances they never knew existed. New York Viking 2013 0670026476 / 9780670026470 3rd Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Peter Byerly isn't sure what drew him into this particular bookshop in the Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye. Nine months earlier, the death of his beloved wife, Amada, had left him shattered. The young antiquarian bookseller relocated from North Carolina to the English countryside, hoping to outrun his grief and rediscover the joy he once took in collecting and restoring rare books. But upon opening an eighteenth-century study of Shakespeare forgeries, Peter is shocked when a portrait of Amanda tumbles out of its pages. Of course, it can't be her. The watercolor is clearly Victorian. Yet the resemblance is uncanny, and Peter becomes obsessed with learning the picture's origins. Peter follows the trail of clues across the centuries - from a raucous London tavern where the unscrupulous bookseller Bartholomew Harbottle plots against the 'upstart crow' William Shakespeare to the unfinished ramparts of an Oxfordshire mansion where a frustrated Victorian painter mourns his lost love and takes revenge on his book-collecting rival. Along the way Peter discovers his holy grail: a priceless literary artifact that could prove the truth about Shakespeare's identity. Fearing the book may be a forgery, Peter races against time to prove its authenticity, evading the clutches of a murderer, meeting a woman who may hold the key to the mystery of the portrait, and finally discovering the truth about his own past and precious Amanda." Book is very slightly bowed. Dust jacket has one minor soft edge crease.
