BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
2 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. A DICTIONARY OF SURNAMES., Lower, Mark Antony.
10 Lower, Mark Antony. A DICTIONARY OF SURNAMES.
Ware Wordsworth 1988 1853269166 / 9781853269165 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good- Very Good-
443 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The origins of words are always a fascination, and the origins of our own names can tell us a great deal of our family history. But the twists and turns of dialect and other influences often obscure the meanings, and a good eye and ear, and a wide knowledge of places, crafts, professions and languages, are needed to unravel many family names. A sense of humour helps, too, and here Mark Antony Lower takes his place in the tradition of observers of linguistic drift and foible such as Dr. Johnson, H.W. Fowler, Eric Partridge and Ernest Gowers. The book is full of fascinating anecdote and detail, and the introductory chapters cover American nomenclature, Scots, Irish and Welsh, and tables of statistical distribution. As for Mr. Lower's engaging style and unstuffy approach, one need only look at his entry for surnames beginning with the letter 'X', where he admits to following the example of a Northern naturalist 'who introduced into his work a chapter entitled 'Concerning Owls in Iceland', the chapter itself consisted of the words, 'There are no Owls in Iceland'. Mark Antony Lower's 'Dictionary of Surnames' is a book of endless delight, full of both scholarship and surprises." Light browning to pages, moderate browning to top and fore-edge of textblock, light edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, two 3" creases at top of front panel.

TALES OF THE AMBER RING., May, Milos. Translated by Vladimir Varecha.
13 May, Milos. Translated by Vladimir Varecha. TALES OF THE AMBER RING.
London B. Mitchell / Orbis 1985 0856135313 / 9780856135316 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Petr Sis.
191 pp, 11 1/4" H. Translated from the Czech. Colour and b&w illustrations throughout. "These marvellous tales come from the faraway Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as from Finland. They are full of earthy humour as well as heroism and romance. They range from court to farmyard, from heaven to hell. the characters are unusually true to life, even unexpectedly so. God Himself is portrayed as being sometimes grumpy, sometimes angry, and very human. The Devil and his cohorts appear frequently, sometimes tricking men, more often being tricked by them. One intriguing aspect of these stories is the way so many of them lead on to another: just as you think you have reached the end, something new happens, and the protagonist is off again. These are among the most intriguing tales ever set down for children, because they do not end with simple morals or easy solutions. Each story creates a world of its own, one which you are unlikely to have encountered before, or ever to find again." One tiny corner bump, small light scuff across fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, small soiling mark on rear panel, soft crease down rear flap.

82 pp, 9" H, soft cover. With deft descriptive powers, (he) leads us gently into this new facet of his amazing spectrum of interest. Not unexpectedly, there even is poetry in his approach to studying prehistoric remains! From childhood to adolesc e n c e , to wartime service with the U.S. Army in the Southwest Pacific, from exploring the vast sand dunes of Lake Athabasca to excavating a 3000-year-old-site he discovered west of Winnipeg, Nero allows us to share his enthusiasm and excitement in o ut do or adventures." THE NITEHOOD., Nickless, Will.
19 Nickless, Will. THE NITEHOOD.
Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, 1966, first edition.
136 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations by the author. "Mr Harris, (a rat) who has come into money, is eager to improve the social tone of his friends and neighbours, and to win for himself the recognition of an esta blished place in society; he aspires to a knighthood. His efforts to enlighten the deeply conservative little animals around him meets with little success: how he fares in his more ambitious aim is told in the pages of this story. Assist e d b y t h e ingenious poet (and valet, Beddoes Waterbrook, a rabbit) and by the accidental cross purposes that occur in the larger world of the Others, strange things happen and curious things emerge....To suspend disbelief and begin the story is t o e nt e r a ne w world: a world separate but intertwined with that of our everyday experience. There is a cricket match, of which the strangest thing is perhaps that it remains unrecorded by Neville Cardus, for it is impossible to imagine him ab se nt on su ch a n o cc asion. Then there is Old Beak and Claws (the owl) and his collection of snuff boxes....It may not always be, as Otter Mullet the fishmonger remarks on one occasion, 'good natural history', but it is as well to remem ber some tim es tha t t her e a re o the r sorts of truth (and the poetic not least among them) that are even more important to human beings than that particular variety found within the covers of text books...."
