NORTHROP FRYE: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES., Denham, Robert D. (Northrop Frye.)
1 Denham, Robert D. (Northrop Frye.) NORTHROP FRYE: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1987 0802026303 / 9780802026309 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
449 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Northrop Frye was one of the most influential critics of the twentieth century. His output was prodigious: his publications include thirty-eight books and monographs, nearly 300 essays and articles, and some 15 reviews and miscellaneous pieces. His reputation is international: he has been the subject of numerous books, a forthcoming biography, and thirty doctoral dissertations from universities as far-flung as Freiburg, Oxford, and Texas. With this bibliography, the massive body of work by and about Frye is now made readily accessible for the first time. More than 2500 entries are included, organized in a practical and straightforward structure. Part One, covering works by Frye, is arranged in chronological order. Part Two, which deals with secondary sources, is presented in alphabetical order. (The author) has provided ample notation for the many hundreds of entries; with the primary sources, he has quoted from Frye's own words as far as possible to illuminate the tone as well as the content." Minor soiling to top/bottom edges of text block, one small and one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.

NOTHING MORE TO DECLARE., Holmes, John Clellon.
2 Holmes, John Clellon. NOTHING MORE TO DECLARE.
Andre Deutsch, 1968, first U.K. edition.
253 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....an account of living and writing by one of the Beat generation, a friend of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and others less famous but no less interesting and significant - and it makes nonsense of the game of 'generationing' by speaking to everyone, anywhere. It begins with four intimate portraits: Ginseberg, Kerouac, Gershon Legman and Jay Landesman, whom John Clellon Holmes met in his early twenties and recognized at once as people he wanted to know well. It was not long before they had all been labelled 'the Beats', but a label is only what the outsider sees. Here we are shown the living reality to which it was attached and are told what it felt like to wear it - and to peel i t off, which is what, as he approached his forties, Mr Holmes discovered that he had done. He is without pomposity and doesn't tell us what we expect to read. He remebers what it was like to sigh after Carole Lombard and to long to be Hum p h r e y B o g art, as well as what it was like to learn how to write. He remembers what his friends brought home from the grocer as well as what they said about communism and sexual freedom. Summing up the sexual revolution, he digs into the ex pe ri en ce o f l iv in g it and makes generalisations seem empty. Pondering on Kennedy's assassination he produces from his personal reaction an interpretation of Oswald so preceptive that it jolts. And assessing the nature of a writer's life a nd the ro le of sp oke sma n, he comes quickly to the conclusion that 'fame, ambition, ego - more and more they seem like husks to me, sad husks housing frightened twitter'. Having made his declaration at the frontier of middle age, he is ready to go his own wa y f or his own rea sons, a wise man and an impressive writer...." E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL., Moore, Doris Langley.
8 Moore, Doris Langley. E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL.
Philadelphia Chilton Books 1966 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
313 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Publication of this first biography ever written about E. Nesbit (1858-1924), whose books for children have delighted readers young and old, is a literary event of major importance. Mrs. Langley Moore has written a new introduction to the present edition, telling a number of things that had to be omitted from the original work, when so many of E. Nesbit's contemporaries or members of her family were still alive. Also, the entire book has been revised and relevant material that either had to be left out originally, or has been discovered since, has been added. Edith Nesbit married Hubert Bland, a young journalist and enthusiastic Socialist, in 1880. He took the chair at the first meeting of the Fabian Society and both were active in the Fabian movement. When Bland, while ill, was defrauded by a business partner, Edith Nesbit was forced to earn the family's living. She began to write poems, short stories, and recitiations, and made hand painted Christmas cards. After fifteen years of literary hack work, in which she produced some thirty-three books, she hit her stride with the writing of 'The Treasure Seekers', the first of the stories about the irrepressible Bastable children. Among the other books that have made her a household favorite are 'The Wouldbegoods', 'Five Children and It', 'The House of Arden', and 'The Story of the Amulet'. (The author) has given us a remarkable portrait of the genesis of a writer, and the writer's world. In seeking out her information she contacted many of the most eminent literary and theatrical figures in England at the time." Minor toning to margins of pages, light toning and faint foxing mark on fore-edge of text block, minor soiling on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, general light browning - more on spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear sticker removal/soiling mark at top corner of front panel, very small foxing mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

San Francisco Night Shade Books 2012 1597804002 / 9781597804004 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Jacket art by Mark Nelson.
279 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "1864. London is a city in transition. The Constantine Affliction - a strange malady that kills some of its victims and physically transforms others into the opposite sex - has spread scandal and upheaval through society. Scientific marvels and disasters, such as clockwork courtesans, the alchemical fires of Whitechapel, electric carriages, and acidic monsters lurking in the Thames, have forever altered the face of the city. Pembroke 'Pimm' Halliday is an aristocrat with an interest in criminology, who uses his keen powers of observation to assist the police or private individuals - at least when he's sober enough to do so. Ellie Skyler, who hides her gender behind the byline 'E. Skye', is an intrepid journalist driven by both passion and necessity to uncover the truth, no matter where it lies. When Pimm and Skye stumble onto a dark plot that links the city's most notorious criminal overlord with the Queen's new consort, famed scientist Sir Bertram Oswald, they soon find the forces of both high and low society arrayed against them. Can they save the city from the arcane machinations of one of history's most infamous monsters - and uncover the shocking origins of 'The Constantine Affliction'?" 128 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w drawings. "(A) vivid pictorial presentation of (aerial) warfare from the first use of aircraft in war - Italian reconnaissance against the Ottoman Empire in 1912 - to the Armistice in 1918. In striking color the great individual battles of the aces come alive: Immelman, von Richthofen, Voss and Boelcke; Bishop, Collishaw, McCudden, Ball and Beauchamp-Proctor; Rickenbacker; Guynemer, Nungesser and Garros. And the dogfights and sorties; Bloody April and the Fokker Scourge; the Lafayette Escadrille, the Storks, the Flying Circuses; the bombing raids; the balloon busters. The trials of combat and endurance and the men and aero-planes that made it all possible, changing the world's thinking about the methods of war. J.A. Phelan has created more than 400 superb paintings and drawings - executed with the drama and the meticu-lous detail of the artist who takes delight in his subject - for this richly illustrated book. The various aircraft of the Allies and Central Powers are shown in detail (top and side views, camouflage, national markings and pilots' decorations, engines, armament and structure) and in combat as they were flown by the aces. This volume presents an unduplicated view of the 1914-1918 war in the air, when man first captured control of the sky in order to control the ground." OSWALD MOSLEY., Skidelsky, Robert.
14 Skidelsky, Robert. OSWALD MOSLEY.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1975.
578 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0030865808 B&w plates. "The theme of Robert Skidelsky's brilliant biography is one of double tragedy - the self-destruction of Mosley and the failure of the British ruling class to meet the challenge of the twentieth-century. Describing Mosley's early life, Mr Skidelsky lays particular stress on his landed background and his experiences in the trenches during the first world war, both vital factors in forming his character and outlook . There follows his meteoric political rise in the 1920s, when as one of the few politicians who became 'Keynesians' he seemed more than anyone to have grasped the economic problems facing Britain. Frustrated and disillusioned by Ramsay M a c D o n a l d ' s leadership, he resigned from the Labour Government in 1930 at the age of thirty-four and founded first the short-lived New Party, then the British Union of Fascists. (The author) describes Mosley's turbulent career in the 1930 s wh en t he B UF ' to ok politics into the streets', his period in prison during the war as 'Churchill's guest', and finally his present view of world problems. Mr Skidelsky squarely confronts Mosley's most controversial fascist activities: th e gre at ral lie s a nd mar che s w hich often led to violence; his attack on the Jews and his campaign in the East End of London; and his opposition to the second world war which ended with his detention under Regulartion 18B. Drawing extensively on hit her to u npub lish ed Cabi net Pape rs and police reports (including those of the Special Branch), the author skilfully disentangles fact from mythology, and presents for the first time the full evidence on which an informed judgment on Mosl ey' s mot ives and respo nsibi lit y in thes e mat ters can be based; as well as shedding a new and unexpected light on police and government attitudes to fascism in the 1930s...." Toronto Osgoode Society / University of Toronto Press 1985 0802034179 / 9780802034175 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
319pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/red boards with black lettering on spine/front board - no dust jacket (as issued). B&w illustrations. "(T)races the development of the Supreme Court of Canada from its establishment in the earliest days following Confederation, through its attainment of independence from the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in 1949, to the adoption of the Constitution Act, 1982. The authors describe the politics of the judicial appointments and document the internal struggles and tensions between justices. Central to the story is the attitude of successive federal governments to the need for a strong and intellectually vibrant court. Until 1982 the Supreme Court of Canada played a minor role in the history of the Canadian political structure. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms has thrust new responsibility on the Court, and as those responsibilities are increasingly exercised in the years ahead the Court will become a major participant in our national life. This book explores the foundation on which that participation will be built." Minor edge wear, very small erased pencil mark on free front endpaper.
