2 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. "Indian trade silver is a fascinating and little-known part of our cultural heritage - a product of the interaction between two prof oundly different cultures during the European exploration of North America. Originating in the early diplomatic gifts of medals to friendly Indians, the distribution of silver became widespread during the height of the fur trade, 1760 to 18 2 1 . S i l ver ornaments designed specifically for the fur trade included brooches, gorgets, armbands, legbands, earrings, nose-rings, crosses and headbands. A travelling exhibition of over two hundred of these ornaments was organized by the Nati on al M u se um o f Man, Ottawa, and this book was written to accompany it. Previously known only to scholars and collectors, this unusual art form has now become accessible to a much wider public. The silver ornaments created for the fur trade we re pro du c ed by bot h European and colonial silversmiths, but the Iroquois began to make similar pieces for their people after silver ceased to be available through the fur trade. Although the craft died out, it has recently been revived, and the ex hibi tio n inc lud es m any examples of modern Iroquois workmanship. Some pieces are based on traditional trade-silver patterns, but others are of the silversmiths' own design. The book illustrates and describes all the silver chosen for the e xhib ition fro m muse ums in Ca nada and the United States. Paintings and portraits of the period shows the colourful and unexpected ways the Indians wore their silver jewellery." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. A-Z OF STAFFORDSHIRE DOGS: A POTTED HISTORY, Pope, Clive Mason
9 Pope, Clive Mason A-Z OF STAFFORDSHIRE DOGS: A POTTED HISTORY
Woodbridge, Suffolk Antique Collectors' Club 1999 1851492585 / 9781851492589 Reprint Hard Cover Fine Very Good
168 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Colour photographs. "In the 18th century, artists and potters were not slow to reflect in models the interest of the time in identifying and selectively breeding individual types of dog, and continental and home-based factories started to produce realistic examples of both sporting and pampered dogs. Following Landseer's painting of 1836 of Queen Victoria's favourite dog, the King Charles Spaniel Dash, the potters of Staffordshire were not slow to seize the opportunity to turn Dash into a national icon. Pairs of spaniels were portrayed in clay in enormous quantities, followed soon after by many other breeds. The modellers are usually anonymous, but the simple hand-painted decoration, often done by children, gives each piece an individuality and vitality, and as (this) charming book shows, these dogs have an enduring quality that makes them as endearing today as they were when first made." Very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and top edge of rear panel, two tiny dints on front hinge.
