1 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Penguin 1995 0140247165 / 9780140247169 Soft Cover Very Good+
337 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs, map, family tree. "In July 1944 a group of conspirators known as Secret Germany attempted to kill Hitler. The mastermind of the conspiracy was Count Claus von Stauffenberg. Who was this charismatic, dashing aristocrat, who was said to be the only man to stare the Fuhrer down? What were the secret teachings that inspired him to the audacious act of assassination? Forty-six serious but failed attempts on Hitler's life in twenty years reflect a strong anti-Nazi movement in Germany. For Stauffenberg, the bomb plot organized by his esoteric circle was more a moral and spiritual necessity than an act of political expediency. Had he succeeded, he might have become the saviour of the national soul. In this remarkable investigation (the authors) explain how Stauffenberg represents a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In his courage and integrity he stands as an atonement for the barbarism of the Third Reich." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers t o e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at t h e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. I t r equ ir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Nav y po lic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Her e i s a dramatic account of that vital time, enhanced by an awesome setting, which will engage and enlighten both the scholar of naval history and the armchair sailor." Even though many species had sacrificed in battle, some groups of humans thought the 'Golden Rule' translated to 'Humans rule. Now give us your gold'. With the streets descending into bloody race riots, and the organized 'human' brotherhoods flexing both physical and economic muscle, TunFaire was a hairsbreadth from total chaos. Garrett is a wise-guy private investigator who speaks loudly and carries a big stick. He gets pulled into the game when a powerful gang of human rightists starts trying to shake down his employer. Backed by a circle of friends no one would wish on their worst enemy - and a foul-mouthed parrot that won't shut up - Garrett is caught in a conspiracy of hate that pits man against - everybody!" THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
5 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
Coward-McCann, New York, 1963, first American edition.
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, c ourtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brillian t c o m e d i e s of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new an d c om pl ic at ed d ev ices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of for ge ry an d e mbe zzl eme nt. H e became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mist res s, Mada me d u Ba rry. Th e ne xt K ing, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late K ing whi ch we re of expl osive impo rtanc e, in volved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais al lied him self w ith th e caus e of t he Ame rican coloni es; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, Beaumarchais organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, h is pl ay 'T he Barb er of S eville' had be en accl aimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the b an was reluc tantly l ifted, a ll Paris fought to see i t. Wh en the R evolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a fr iend's house. Later he was arre sted, rel eased th rough inf luence of a woma n, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." London Leo Cooper 1970 85052007X First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
320 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "The first organized unit to emerge (concentrating on the Army's supply and transport functions) was the Royal Waggoners, much later to become the Royal Army Service Corps. Since those days, although suffering from a variety of changes in uniform and title, the RASC have been with us in one way or another. Theirs is a remarkable history, and Graeme Crew has managed to convey in one short volume the enormous contribution the Corps has made to the military might and fighting strength of this country. Wherever the British Army were, the Corps made sure that its supplies, ammunition, petrol and every item of military equipment needed by troops in the combat line arrived in time, at the right place and in the right quantity. Without the RASC no army could survive. Their regimental march is 'Wait for the Waggon' - how glad so many of us have been in the past to know that it would always arrive...." 9 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. 474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 09319334200 B&w photographs. "In 1945 seven men, once among the most powerful on earth, were locked away in a vast prison built to hold more than 600 inmates, surrounded by every conce ivable escape-proof precaution. Tried and convicted for attempting to enslave the world, they were the last of what Winston Churchill had called 'the Hitler gang'. Their sentences, meted out by the court at Nuremberg, represented a gigantic s t e p f orward in the recognition of international justice. They stood condemned for their part in a campaign of organized cruelty such as history had never seen before. (This book) is the outcome of years of dedicated research. It examines t h e se ve n m en themselves - their private lives, their motivation, their machinations inside Sapdau, their relationships with each other and their attitudes to their crimes. Built up from conversations with their families, lawyers, friends and e ne mi es, an d, i n s ome cases, the men themselves, from visits to Berlin made with their wives, from letters written in prison, both authorized and smuggled, and from authentic conversations between the prisoners, this aspect of the book is in i tse lf a gr ippi ng stu dy o f human corruption. Equally extraordinary are the book's revelations about the hitherto secret diplomatic and political infighting that went on between the four Powers over the welfare and fate of the seven prisoners. The eve nts a nd in tri gues surr ounding the jail are as spellbinding as those that occurred inside." Very minor foxing on top of text block. 246 pp, 9 3/8" H. Dark blue boards with lighter blue and white lettering on spine and front board - no dust jacket (as issued). Map. "(T)he first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for 'Maritime Rights' which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. (T)races the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands, through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adroitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem." National Museum of Man, Ottawa, 1980.
168 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0660103478 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "Indian trade silver is a fascinating and little-known part of our cultural heritage - a product of the interaction between two prof oundly different cultures during the European exploration of North America. Originating in the early diplomatic gifts of medals to friendly Indians, the distribution of silver became widespread during the height of the fur trade, 1760 to 18 2 1 . S i l ver ornaments designed specifically for the fur trade included brooches, gorgets, armbands, legbands, earrings, nose-rings, crosses and headbands. A travelling exhibition of over two hundred of these ornaments was organized by the Nati on al M u se um o f Man, Ottawa, and this book was written to accompany it. Previously known only to scholars and collectors, this unusual art form has now become accessible to a much wider public. The silver ornaments created for the fur trade we re pro du c ed by bot h European and colonial silversmiths, but the Iroquois began to make similar pieces for their people after silver ceased to be available through the fur trade. Although the craft died out, it has recently been revived, and the ex hibi tio n inc lud es m any examples of modern Iroquois workmanship. Some pieces are based on traditional trade-silver patterns, but others are of the silversmiths' own design. CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO., Gibbs, Peter.
19 Gibbs, Peter. CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1960, first American edition.
297 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The Crimean War was a little war, a seemingly unimportant war which England entered - as Trevelyan wrote - for no better reason than that she was bored with pe ace. When, in 1854, the London crowds saw their soldiers marching off to fight, they cheered with delight. The war against Russia, into which Britain and France had drifted in alliance with Turkey - and which had grown out of a petty quarre l b e t w e en some monks in Jerusalem - was to be a lighthearted and glorious adventure. True, the Crimean was a war to capture only one town. Nonetheless the suffering was appalling and 300,000 lives were lost. It was in the Crimean War that t he te le gr ap h was first used to apprise statemen at home of events at the front. It was then that Florence Nightingale, horrified by the unnecessary waste of life and by the inhumanity of the treatment of the troops, organized the nursing servi ce t hat wa s t o m ak e history. It was, in fact, Crimea that finally ended the myth that war had glamor. In (this book, the author) tells the full story of this strange conflict, how the errors and blunders and optimism on the part of Palmersto n a nd Que en V icto ria, Lo uis Napoleon and Tsar Nicholas developed into a nightmare. Here is the story of the fantastic, gallant and infamous Charge of the Light Brigade, but here also is the unforgettable drama of the ordinary soldier - Briti sh, Fre nch, Russi an an d Tur kish - who fought steadfastly on, though sacrificed again and again by the stupidity of his commanders." ISBN 1574880349 "Are covert operations merely 'dirty tricks' or can they be trump cards, skillfully played to provide decisive advantages in world politics? Throughout history, what has hap pened to states that have developed and effectively used these covert instruments - and to those that have not? What is needed to maintain effective covert capabilities? Roy Godson, one of the country's foremost experts on intelligence, u n t a n g l e s fact from fiction and provides often surprising answers to these provocative questions.
