3 Berton, Pierre. THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1980 0771012357 / 9780771012358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Inscribed By Author
363 pp, 9 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, maps/battle plans. Inscribed on title page: "Pierre Berton / To Leon with my best wishes / Aug '85". "To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Light toning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling; two tiny edge tears archivally taped; light browning on spine, flap-folds, top 1" of panels and top edge of flaps; several tiny dents on front hinge.

Royal coronation robes are truly spectacular, being made of the finest and richest materials, elaborately embroidered in gold, while the officers of Church and State are arrayed in the full panoply of their ceremonial dress in honour of th e So ve reign. The Peers in robes of crimson velvet with ermine trimming and cape, the Knights of the Orders of Chivalry in richly coloured robes and insignia, the Officers of Arms in their tabards and the great Officers of State are massed in rank s of rar e and unforgettable splendour. There are many other occasions on which ceremonial robes are regularly worn, and seen and admired by millions. The State Opening of Parliament brings together the Peers and Judges, the Officers of State and t he Bish ops to hear the Queen's Gracious Speech from the Throne. The annual Garter Ceremony at Windsor is an opportunity to see the Queen and other members of the Royal Family in their blue silk velvet Garter robes, accompanied by the Knights of th e Garte r and the Heralds of the College of Arms. At the Lord Chancellor's Breakfast in October, marking the beginning of the legal year, the most senior Judges wear their splendid black and gold gowns - made of black damask elaborately trimmed wit h gold l ace and handmade gold ornaments - and the High Court Judges their scarlet robes trimmed with ermine, as they process with black-gowned barristers between the House of Lords and Westminster Abbey. The annual election of the Lord Mayor of Lo nd on give s rise to a whole series of events at which civic robes are worn, and also sees the gathering together of the members of the livery companies, whose officers wear a great variety of ceremonial dress. In the summer, degree ceremonie s take pl ace all over the country, and an extraordinary number of variations on the basic theme of the academic gown and hood can be seen. In this book, from dawn to nightfall on June 18, 1815, hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute, we follow each twist of the a ct io n i n tu rn from: The English point of view (by William Seymour)...The French point of view (by Jacques Champagne)...The German point of view (by Eberhard Kaulbach)...As the action unfolds, each country's writer gives his own view (plus the won der fu ll y imm edi ate voices of his countrymen who survived to write of their experience) of the day that called forth some of the most brilliant tactical maneuvering - and the bloodiest and fiercest fighting - in the history of warfare." 9 Clark, Andrew. (Harold Pringle.) A KEEN SOLDIER: THE EXECUTION OF SECOND WORLD WAR PRIVATE HAROLD PRINGLE.
Alfred A. Knopf, (Toronto, 2002), first edition.
342 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 067697354X "Harold Pringle was underage when the Second World War broke out, eager to leave quiet Flinton, Ontario, to serve by his father's side. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. Andrew Clark examines the fallout of a crisis that disfigured our national conscience and continues to raise questions about the ethics of war..." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. Greenhill, London, 1988, reprint.
355 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0947898875 Maps. "Whether among the first three to charge the French guns at Medellin, leading his troopers into the enemy ranks at Salamanca, or evolving order out of the chaos that bedevill ed the Portuguese Army in 1809, Sir Benjamin D'Urban was not only a brave and resolute soldier but also a painstaking and highly efficient Chief of Staff to Marshal Beresford. Finding, on arrival at Corunna in October 1808, that he had been a p p o i n t ed to that part of the Army left behind in Portugal, D'Urban set out to meet Sir John Moore in the hope of receiving fresh orders. This was the beginning of six years of unbroken service which included taking part in ten battles and s ie ge s. Af te r a short period as Staff Officer to Sir Robert Wilson, he was appointed Colonel and QMG to the Portuguese Army by Marshal Beresford in April 1809. The 'Journals' give a day to day summary of the Peninsular Campaign, which was found in val uab l e b y S ir Charles Oman, and provides a counter to what D'Urban considered unfair criticism of Beresford by Sir Charles Napier. Long out of print, this unique record of events fills a need for everyone interested in the campaigns of 1809 -181 5, p ar ticu larl y i n regard to the operations of the Right Wing of the Allied Army and of the part played by the Portuguese Army, which has not always received the credit due for some of its major exploits." The orders made a major contribution to the defence and expansion of Western Chistendom, and this required considerable funds and reserves of manpower. This book describes the ways in which these were obtained, and giv e s a n a c count of extensive governmental machinery developed to enable the orders to carry out their tasks effectively. Although their members combined a military with a monastic way of life, the military orders are shown to have differed from o th e r re l ig i o us foundations not only in their daily routine but also in their adminstrative structure and in their predominantly lay membership." ISBN 0804810087 "In two expeditions between 1819 and 1827, Franklin discovered and mapped nearly two thousand miles of arctic coastline; by far the greater part of this was accomplished on the second journey, the subject of the this present 'Narrative'. Franklin's plan for the second expedition was carefully devised to avoid the limited success and costly loss of life experienced by the first party. Dr. John Richardson again accompanied him, as did Lieutenant George Back and the Eskimo interpreter, Augustus. Establishing a base on Great Bear Lake, Franklin descended the Mackenzie River with four boats of his own design. At the mouth, Richardson took two vessels eastward to map the coastline between the Mackenzie and the Coppermine River; Franklin travelled westward to explore the coast as far as Icy Cape on the northwest shoulder of Alaska. He expected to meet Captain Beechey who would be sailing eastward from Icy Cape and thus complete the charts between the Mackenzie and the Pacific. While Richardson carried his task to its successful conclusion, Franklin and Beechey were prevented from meeting by persistent fog and impassable ice fields. Under orders to return to his base before the end of the brief Arctic summer, Franklin reluctantly turned back, leaving an undiscovered gap of only one hundred and fifty miles between himself and Beechey's ship. The two branches of the expedition had together mapped twelve hundred miles of coastline, establishing the commander as a man who would add more to the shape of the continent than any other in history. Franklin's account of the expedition reveals a rugged veracity equal to the task." Appendices: Topographical and Geological Notices, by Dr. Richardson, R.N.; Meteorological Tables, arranged from the Registers kept at Fort Franklin, by the Officers of the Expedition, by Dr. Richardson; Observations on Solar Radiation, by Dr. Richardson; Observations on the Velocity of Sound at different Temperatures, by L ieutenant Kendall, R.N.; Observations for Latitude, Longitude, and Variations, by Captain Franklin, R.N.; Observations relative to the daily Variation of the Horizontal Magnetic Needle, by Captain Franklin; On the Aurora Borealis, by Captain Franklin.
