WARTIME: UNDERSTANDING AND BEHAVIOR IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Fussell, Paul.
3 Fussell, Paul. WARTIME: UNDERSTANDING AND BEHAVIOR IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Oxford University Press, New York, 1989.
330 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0195037979 B&w photographs. "(H)ere Fussell examines the immediate impact of the war on common soldiers and civilians. He describes the psychological and emotional atmosphere of World War II. He analyzes the wishful thinking and the euphemisms people needed to deal with unacceptable reality (the early belief, for instance, that the war could be won with 'precision bombing', that is, by long distance); he describes the ab n o r m a l l y intense frustration of desire and some of the means by which desire was satisfied; and, most important, he emphasizes the damage the war did to intellect, discrimination, honesty, individuality, complexity, ambiguity and wit. Of cou rs e, n o Fu ss el l book would be complete without some serious discussion of the literature of the time. He examines, for instance, how the great privations of wartime (when oranges would be raffled off as valued prizes) resulted in roccoco pros e s tyl es th at dwe lt longingly on lavish dinners, and how the 'high-mindedness' of the era and the almost pathological need to 'accentuate the positive' invited the downfall of the acerbic H.L. Mencken and the ascent of E.B. White." Light wrinkl ing at b ott om of spin e. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing, minor dint on rear hinge. Near Fine/Very Good+

BOYS AND GIRLS COME OUT TO PLAY: A COLLECTION OF IRISH SINGING GAMES., Leyden, Maurice.
4 Leyden, Maurice. BOYS AND GIRLS COME OUT TO PLAY: A COLLECTION OF IRISH SINGING GAMES.
Belfast Appletree 1993 0862814324 / 9780862814328 First Edition Soft Cover Liisa Hindsberg.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w drawings, music notation. "The material in this book has been culled from many sources and I have brought together a comprehensive range of children's games played throughout Ireland, complete with music notation, game instructions and background notes setting each game in its historical perspective. In this collection I have included long forgotten games, such as 'Thread the Needle' and 'Here Is One Knight' - games of great antiquity that give us glimpses of the Middle Ages. There are also the more popular games, such as 'Nuts in May', 'The Farmer's in His Den' and 'Briar Rosebud' that are as familiar to the children of Europe and America as they are to the children of Ireland. These are the games that have survived 'the usual rubbing or blurring consequent on long use among unlettered people'. The versions I have given are not the definitive ones and, inevitably, readers will have different ways of playing the games. This does not detract from them but emphasises the tenacity of children's folklore, the survival of which has defied time and place." Interior - very light toning to inside of covers, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light rubbing, minor edge wear, small scuff on bottom of text block.

This witty and ingenious book delves into the hidden meanings of the most innocuous-sounding nursery rhymes, revealing a seething subtext of sexual innuendo, religious hatred and political subversion.
