If you can accept this fact both your love-life and your cooking will improve immeasurably. This is a book for people who cook with love and enjoyment, for people who want to leave drudgery out of the kitchen. It tells you in cartoons and words how to prepare food (maximum time for most things thirty minutes), how to eat it, and even what to do while you're waiting for it to cook. Anybody can be a good cook. 'All this idiocy that makes good food the specialty of gourmet clubs', says the author, 'is just another aspect of snobbery. Nice dishes and tablecloths are great but they are not essential. What is essential is a loose and happy approach to the stove'. You may never be called a gourmet if you follow this book, but you will get to be called a hell of a good cook." Bump at top of spine - migrates int o text block, small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear and rubbing, light edge wrinkling, a few tiny/small edge tears - some with creases.

7 Beck, L. Adams. (E. Barrington). Aka Elizabeth Louisa 'Lily' Moresby. THE WAY OF STARS: A ROMANCE OF REINCARNATION.
New York Sun DIAL 1940 Reprint Hard Cover Good+ Fair
408 pp, 7 3/4" H. Bright orange cloth with decorative black title block on spine, top edge orange. "When they broke into the inner chamber of the tomb, the first thing they saw was a throne of yellowed ivory poised on lion's legs and claws of gold. On it sat a figure, a figure of some queen of ancient Egypt, her youth and breath-taking beauty preserved for centuries in the sealed silence of the vault. Suddenly a thin shaft of sunlight trickled in through the blackness and the beautiful image vanished, disintegrated before their eyes into a small pile of dust. The miraculously preserved body was gone, but in the incredible, turbulent weeks that followed Miles Seton could never lose the memory of that marble-white face, the deep repose of the features and the faint, faint smile which touched the mouth - . Shifting from the musty, century-laden atmosphere of an Egyptian tomb to the garish, colorful atmos-phere of modern India this fascinating novel tells the strange story of a love that defied time and space itself, the story of a queen of prehistoric Egypt brought to life in the twentieth century. (The author) has a deep understanding of oriental mysticism and this engrossing story provides a vivid picture of Indian philosophy and thought with all its mystic beauty and curious logic. (This) is indeed a skillful, exciting blending of the spiritual and the material." Book is slightly cocked, has previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper, small label from bookstore on front pastedown, light browning to endpapers, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor color fading on top of text block. THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
9 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." It is a study of the psychosociological tensions that affected these young people - a group of intelligent and able men who were only partially in control of their destinies, yet had the ambitions, the achieve m e n t m o t i v ation, possibly the group skills and personal innovation, to strive and struggle through the dramatic events they experienced. We will come to learn a good deal about these four men (and the mother of one of them) - to see their fr us tr at i on s, t he ir loneliness, their anomie, their failures. At the same time their enthusiasms, their successes, their hopes and dreams, come through constantly, giving a poignancy to their story that transcends the 'facts' themselves. Th e s tuf f o f thi s s tud y i s a n extensive series of letters from the lieutnants back to their families during the height of the hostilities....this book also draws on an intriguing new method of study whose name is content anlaysis. 16 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Hard Cover Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

THE INNISKILLING DIARIES 1899-1903. 1st BATTALION, 27th ROYAL INNISKILLING FUSILIERS IN SOUTH AFRICA., Cassidy, Martin. Foreword by Brigadier W.J. Hiles.
17 Cassidy, Martin. Foreword by Brigadier W.J. Hiles. THE INNISKILLING DIARIES 1899-1903. 1st BATTALION, 27th ROYAL INNISKILLING FUSILIERS IN SOUTH AFRICA.
Leo Cooper, Barnsley, 2001, first edition.
252 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850528240 B&w plates, maps. "One hundred years ago, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, along with many other British regiments, were fighting a desperate campaign many thousands of mi les from their native land. The Second Boer War tested the resolve and resources of what was then the mightiest Empire in the world. A succession of reverses raised the real spectre of defeat at the hands of the Boers; an unthinkable humi l i a t i o n . The depth of public interest and concern felt at the time is reflected in continual fascination in this conflict. Thus Martin Cassidy's careful editing of the graphic diaries of three members of the Regiment's 1st Battalion (two o ff ic er s an d on e p rivate soldier) is to be greatly welcomed. Through the differing angles of these fine accounts we witness not just the drama of battle but the harsh conditions that the British troops had to endure. To read first-hand record s o f t he ex tra or din ar y deeds such as those performed at Inniskilling Hill and the Relief of Ladysmith is a privilege that will mean much to those closely associated with the Regiment and to all with an interest in military history." Tiny bum p at top of sp ine. V ery min or wrinkle at top of spine. Near Fine/Near Fine

The Age of Revolution - 332 pp, 1957, "The hundred-and-twenty-five years covered by this volume are among the richest in modern history. They are filled with great captains - Sir Winston's own illustrious forebear Marlborough, Wolfe, Clive, Nelson and Wellington; with great statesmen - Walpole, Chatham and Pitt; with great writers, philosophers and scientists. Huge territories changed hands as the British Empire was forged in the heat of the continuing struggle. Vast areas, particularly in the Pacific Ocean, were brough for the first time beneath the hand of man. New lands were settled, and new countries born." Volume IV. The Great Deomocracies - 322 pp, 1958, "takes the history of the English-speaking peoples from the days of peace which followed the downfall of Napoleon to the death of Queen Victoria and the beginning of our present era. The British Empire at its highest peak; the creation of the Dominions and the first steps towards the British Commonwealth of Nations; the industrial revolution; the startling expansion of the United States and their rise to world power, interrupted only by the savage slaughter of the Civil War; these events alone have made the nineteenth century one of the most decisive in the history of mankind."
