1 Bamfield, Veronica. ON THE STRENGTH: THE STORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY WIFE.
London Charles Knight 1974 0853142319 / 9780853142317 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
223 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "British army wives 'on the strength' have campaigned alongside their men since the earliest days of the standing army. They have had to maintain their marriages and some semblance of home life on camps and stations in every quarter of the world, during peace and war. (The author) brings alive for us stories of heroines whose love and loyalty helped resign them to taking second place to the Army in their husband's lives, and enabled them to keep house and bring up children in alien and often dangerous surroundings. She discusses snobberies and superstitions, traditions and taboos, and with wit and humour treats the 'colonels' ladies and Judy O'Gradys' alike. History, anecdote and personal reminiscences are combined in this book, which includes vivid extracts from letters, diaries and memoirs, some of which have not previously been published. Many of the book's illustrations are provided from a unique collection of photographs taken by a pioneer of photography, Henry Wood - Veronica Bamfield's grandfather - in the course of his military career." Very light browning to pages, very small foxing mark in margin of page 87, light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, light browning to top inside edge, light to moderate fading to spine color - lettering still very legible, very small area of surface paper loss and a small ghost sticker mark at bottom of front flap.

160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

8 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

Six colour illustrations on dark olive stock (one double page) and over 15 b&w illustrations (collated). THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
11 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

16 Greville, Charles C.F. Edited by Henry Reeve. A JOURNAL OF THE REIGN OF QUEEN VICTORIA FROM 1837 TO 1852. COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES.
New York D. Appleton 1885 Hard Cover Very Good- No Jacket
576 pp, 598 pp, 8vo (8" H), olive green cloth with gold lettering and banding on spines, gold crest on front boards. These two volumes form the second part of 'The Greville Memoirs' which began with the reigns of George IV and William IV, but are complete in themselves, being numbered Vol. I and Vol. II. "(T)he present publication embraces a period of fourteen years, extending from the accession of Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1837 to the coup d'etat of Napoleon III in 1851. The occurrences which took place after the close of 1851, the subsequent establishment of the Imperial power in France, the formation of the Cabinet of Lord Aberdeen, followed in 1853 by the Crimean War, mark an important epoch in the history of this country and Europe. I have therefore thought that this date is the appropriate conclusion of this portion of the work. Mr. Greville continued his Journal for nine years more, until the close of 1860, though in his later years he was less conversant with public affairs than he had been in the more active period of his life." From the Preface. Vol. I has a small bump to bottom corner of approx. first 50 pages, small finger print on verso of front free endpaper, small bump to bottom corner of rear board, small light stain at top fore-edge of textblock - scattered tiny faint foxing marks on lower fore-edge, small line scuff on front board. Ryerson Press, Toronto, 1967, reprint.
164 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "What boy or girl wouldn't like the adventure of surveying in the Rockies when pack-mules, gold miners, and railway surveyors followed trails known only to the Indians? Bruce, the greenhorn from San Francisco, and Josette, the French girl from Edmonton, and her half-brother Mike had that exciting experience when they accompanied Edward Jarvis on his Canadian Pacific Railway surveys in 1874-1875. During the summer the two boy s endured the hardships and adventures of an exploratory survey from Kamloops to Tete Jaune Cach, then an instrumental survey along the North Fraser River to Fort George. A rock slide, plunge into a treacherous river, forest fire, cougar a t t a c k , s n ow avalanche and losing the trail are some of the dramatic events in this book for both boys and girls. That was the life of the first Canadian Pacific surveyors, who pioneered the trail-finding so that the Atlantic could be link ed t o th e Pa ci f ic w ith steel." Minor soiling at top of front hinge. New York W.W. Norton 2012 0393070212 / 9780393070217 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
238 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w and colour photographs. "For millenia, fresh olive oil has been one of life's necessities - not just as food but also as medicine, a beauty aid, and a vital element of religious rituals. Medical researchers today continue to confirm the remarkable, life-giving properties of true extra virgin olive oil. But this symbol of purity has become deeply corrupt. Most of what appears in supermarkets falls short of the high standards that define extra virgin oil, and some of it isn't even made from olives. Smelly, rancid, and downright fake olive oils are everywhere, from corner pizzerias to top restaurants. Tom Mueller takes us on a journey through the world of olive oil, meeting the hardworking artisan producers who struggle to conserve ancient, local traditions in the face of an increasingly globalized marketplace; fraudsters and multinationals who control the flows of fake products; chefs, researchers, military police, and oil sommeliers who celebrate the extraordinary oils that truly deserve the name 'extra virgin'. Superbly written, rich with fascinating forays into olive oil's uses throughout time, (this book) unveils the sacred history and profane present of a substance seen for millennia as the essence of health and civilization."
