New York Zebra 1993 0821741004 / 9780821741009 First Edition Mass Market Paperback Very Good+
320 pp, 6 7/8" H. "The ravages of nuclear war have reduced America, the once-proud land of plenty, to a battle-seared landscape of blasted rubble and toxic waste. A few tattered pockets of civilization struggle against the tyranny of the totalitarian army's crushing military occupation. Only one man dares to challenge the enemies of freedom - John Thomas Rourke: ex-CIA Covert Operations Officer, weapons specialist and warrior - the ultimate Survivalist. New forces are at work to destroy democracy in the dark halls of Deitrich Zimmer's headquarters. Obsessed with genetic experiments, the fascist leader holds Rourke's beloved Sarah hostage and threatens to kill her unless the Survivalist agrees to undertake a suicide mission to retrieve Zimmer's ultimate prize: the frozen corpse of Adolf Hitler. Fighting their way across New York's poisonous wastelands, Rourke and his brave commandos must penetrate an ancient mountain complex and do battle with an underground race of high-tech warriors to seize their unholy cargo and stop Zimmer's plan to annihilate America's future forever!" THE ANGELIC AVENGERS., Andrezel, Pierre. (pseud of Karen Blixen, aka Isak Dinesen). Dust jacket art by Michael Wickham.
2 Andrezel, Pierre. (pseud of Karen Blixen, aka Isak Dinesen). Dust jacket art by Michael Wickham. THE ANGELIC AVENGERS.
Putnam, London, 1946, first British edition.
303 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Pierre Andrezel, whose name appears on this novel, is described as a young Frenchman, born in Rouen 1915, and educated at Oxford where he wrote stories for English magazines. His original publication of 'The Angelic Avengers' in Copenhagen in 1944 may be explained by the state of France at that time, and the less oppressive conditions of the Danes, whom the British Prime Minister dubbed 'the Gangster's Canary Birds'. The use of this phr a s e i n the book can hardly fail to be an allusion, and may have a certain significance, although it would be an error to regard the book as in any serious way allegorical. Pierre Andrezel has not been heard of since the appearance of his novel i n De n ma rk . The setting of (this book) is England and France 1840-41, when a romantic school of fiction still carried on something of the flamboyance and mystery of the Gothic Revival." - from the dust jacket flap. Pierre Andrezel was in f act K are n Bli xen ( Isaak Dinesen) of 'Out of Africa' fame. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate browning, areas of light to moderate edge wrinkling, light edge wear. Very Good/Good+

'We had the incredible good fortune', writes Lucie Aubrac, 'to l i v e a s ourselves - we did not have to adopt false identities or go into hiding - until the spring of 1943'. (This) is her harrowing account of the months of her most audacious participation in the Resistance: the months when, pregnant with her s ec on d c hi l d, she planned and took part in raids to free captive comrades - including her own husband, under Nazi death sentence - from the prisons of Klaus Barbie, the infamous 'Butcher of Lyon'." Grove, New York, 1990, 6th printing.
288 pp, 8 1/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 080213775X B&w photographs, map. "Until his death in 2000, Artyom Borovik was considered one of the preeminent journalists in Russia. With (this book) he provided the world its first glimpse inside the Soviet m ilitary machine, capturing the soldiers' terror, helplessness, and despair at waging war in a foreign land against an unseen enemy for unclear purposes. When first published, Borovik's groundbreaking revelations exposed the weaknesses beneath t h e S oviet Union's aura of military might, creating an enormous controversy both in Russia and around the world. A vital and fascinating portrait of the Soviet empire at the twilight of its power, this is a book that still resonates today." F i ne

RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE., Bull, Theodore, editor.
7 Bull, Theodore, editor. RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE.
Michael Joseph, London, 1967, first edition.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, fold-out map showing land apportionment in 1965. "The first and major portion of this book consists of a factual account of some of the more important political, social and economic developments in Britain's colony of Southern Rhodesia from the time of the first European occupation to the present day. It draws on historical records, official reports and government statements to explain what the Land Apportionment Act is, why it was introduced, and what its practical effects are; to examine local government, the educational systems, and economic development in urban and rural areas; to analyse the effect which some of the past and present legislation has on the living a n d working conditions of black and white Rhodesians; and, in the process, to illustrate the political attitudes of Europeans and Africans, and the separate development of the racial communities. (It) collates much of the kind of factual material w hi ch used to appear regularly in the Salisbury journal, the 'Central African Examiner', before it ceased publication. UDI and the censorship imposed under the Emergency regulations in November, 1965, resulted in the 'Examiner's' December issue bei ng heavily cut - about half the material submitted for censorship was banned. The journal's publishing company launched a court case to challenge the legality of censorship and so, by implication, of the Rhodesian regime, but this was unsuccessful and the December 1965 issue was therefore (its) last. The factual material in this book was prepared by former contributors to the 'Examiner' and edited by Theodore Bull, the sponsor and former editor of the journal. His own personal assessment o f Br itish policy on Rhodesia, before and since UDI, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock, forms the second part of the book. His conclusions are controversial, and readers of widely differing political views could be equally shocked by t hem, but they may stimulate a healthy reassessment of attitude towards the whole unhappy Rhodesian situation." Previous owner's place, date and signature on free front endpaper; slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrink ling, slight browning on spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good/Very Good-

Robert Hale, London, 1954, revised edition.
211 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, fold-out map at rear. "The Channel Islands are the oldest of Her Majesty's overseas possessions. Their self-governing status in the British Commonwealth is unique and through t heir long and often troubled history they have frequently played a part in world affairs that is out of all proportion with their size. In this book, which is illustrated from a profusion of well chosen photographs, the author has given an e r u d i t e portrait of the islands as they are at the present time. The day-to-day life of the islanders, the peculiarity of their institutions, customs and government are woven with the story of their past to form a fascinating picture. The r ea de r is s ho wn the beauty of the countryside with its prosperous agriculture and the grandeur of the towering cliffs and shares in the fascination of the little islets whose only inhabitants are the sea birds. The author....has lived in one o r o the r of the is lan d s almost all his life, becoming a Channel Islander by adoption at an early age. With the exception of a break for war service, he has devoted all the time he can spare from bookselling to the study of the islands, part icu larl y th ei r b ird life . H is enthusiasm as a field naturalist has taken him to every part of the larger islands and to most of the smaller reefs and rocks. The Channel Islands have received much publicity since their occupation by the Ger man Army durin g t he w ar, but f ew ac cou nts have presented such a comprehensive and readable story of an area that never fails to captivate for life all those who visit it." Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears and chips, light browning and several light stains on rear pane l, a f ew sma ll fo xing marks . McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1980.
176 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070924295 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "The liberation of the Netherlands in 1944-45 ended five long years of hardship, oppression, and the indignity of armed occupation. The German occupation culminated in the 'Hunger Winter' of 1944-45 when, deprived of food and fuel, thousands in the heavily populated western Netherlands starved to death. Most of the Jewish community had died in Nazi concent r a t i o n c amps and thousands of men had been deported to Germany as forced labour. No wonder the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian, British, American and Polish troops released a wave of unforgettable joy....Canadian soldiers recall th e ad va nc e ac r os s Belgium and the Netherlands as one of the most arduous and bitterely contested campaigns of the war. Often their tanks and heavy vehicles bogged down in the soggy terrain and the infantry had to advance on foot across the flo od ed pol der s and a lon g muddy dikes against well-defended German positions. To the soldiers, too, the liberation was a release from the terrors of war, and they joined gladly in the celebrations with the Dutch people. To most Canadians in 193 9 t he Neth erla nd s wa s a tin y far-away country about which they knew little. The momentous events of 1944-45 established a solid bond of affection between the two counties, strengthened after the war by the thousands of war brides and emigran ts w ho heade d for Ca nada. Th is al bum of words and pictures is published in a spirit of rememberance and celebration. Not only does it recapture the emotions of the Dutch at regaining their freedom, but it also commemorates a singular and no ble C ana dian a chieve ment ."
