"With its dramatic landscapes and rugged beauty, Alberta's Bow River valley has inspired generations of artists. (This book) brings together a col lection of works by local and visiting artists from 1845 to 2000 that captures the many moods of the river from its source high in the Rocky Mountains down to the city of Calgary and eastward across the open prairie. (The authors) have select e d f r o m a number of Alberta museums and national collections which depict the Bow River and its valley, representing a broad array of historical periods, artistic styles, and points of view. From European topographers and military artists to p ai nt e rs c om missioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, from the Group of Seven to modernists and abstractionists, these pictures of the Bow valley tell us much about changing attitudes towards nature and the environment as well as the evolution of an a rti sti c c ommunity in western Canada."Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 6 Jack, Donald. Forewords by Pierre Berton and Martin M. Hoffman, M.D. ROGUES, REBELS, AND GENIUSES: THE STORY OF CANADIAN MEDICINE.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1981 0385155751 / 9780385155755 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
662 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(A) lively and absorbing account of more than 400 years of medicine in Canada, from the Indian shamans to the present day. Canadian doctors have made an enormous contribution to world medicine - their achievements range from the discovery of insulin to the development of the cobalt bomb. And the famouse names are here: Grenfell, Archibald, Osler, Bethune, Penfield, Selye, Banting. But, as Pierre Berton points out in his foreword, (this) is 'more than a history of Canadian medicine: in a curious way it is also a history of the Canadian nation. In his monumental examination of the place of doctors in our history, Donald Jack makes it clear that since Cartier's day medical men have been bound up in the development of the country - not only as practitioners but also as politicians, explorers, gadflies, soldiers, community leaders.' The author brings to his subject not only a depth of research but a novelist's eye for the dramatic, the humorous, and the eccentric. The medical men and women who appear in these pages, 'in their furs and shirtsleeves, bloodstained frock coats and sterilzed gowns, tell an intensely personal story of triumphant response to challenge; triumphant not least because their lives affirm the supreme value of the individual ego'." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing, slight browning to top/bottom edges.

CORVETTES CANADA: CONVOY VETERANS OF WWII TELL THEIR TRUE STORIES., Johnston, Mac.
7 Johnston, Mac. CORVETTES CANADA: CONVOY VETERANS OF WWII TELL THEIR TRUE STORIES.
Toronto McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1994 0075513811 / 9780075513810 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
310 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, map. "The corvette was 'the' ship to define the Canadian navy in World War II as an escort service. From the fall of 1940 until May 1945, we follow these small warships as they shepherd convoys of merchant ships carrying weapons, food, oil, raw materials and manufactured goods from North America to the United Kingdom. On the return trip, the escorts bring back the empty vessels for reloading. We see the routines of corvette life punctuated by sudden bursts of fierce action. These are life-and-death moments for the warship escorts, the merchant ships they protect and the attacking U-boats of the German navy. But there is another enemy - the North Atlantic itself. It is a powerful force that dictates the corvette crews' living conditions and, at times, even their chances of survival. The corvettes saw action in other important areas, so our veterans tell us about the famous Triangle Run and lesser-known efforts such as trips to Labrador and escort work in the St. Lawrence River. We also learn about service in the English Channel, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and in the Pacific Ocean. This is the story of the men themselves - men from the lower deck and the wardroom. It is the story of the 123 corvettes they sailed. And in many ways the corvette story is an analogy for Canada as a whole: unprepared for war, committed to a cause, bloodied in batle - and ultimately triumphant." Creasing at fore-edge of page 113/114, slight bump/wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of hinges and flap-folds, very minor rubbing.

128 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w and colour photographs. "He has been called the 'greatest goal scorer in professional hockey history,' not least for his astonishing feat of notching 50 goals in 50 games. Yet that alone hardly explains his legend. Maurice Richard not only ushered in hockey's modern era with his prolific scoring touch and fiery play, he also came to symbolize the hopes and fears of an entire culture. Quebec in the 1940s and '50s wanted a hero and they found one in Richard - a fierce competitor, a skilful artist and a proud warrior, whose famous temper triggered one of the darkest events in Canadian sporting history - the Montreal riot of 1955. This look back at the greatest player to ever don the red, white and blue includes some of the finest sportswriters of the era, documenting Richard the hero and Richard the villain, Richard the doting family man and Richard the aging hockey legend. Passionate about everything in life, Richard raised the stakes for all of us who understand that hockey has always been more than just a game." Large gift insciption on free front endpaper; previous owner's name, place and date on half-title page; 5" line indentation on rear board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, 5" line indentatiom on rear panel, two tiny light stains on inside surface.

192 pp, 10 7/8" H11 3/4" D. B&w and colour reproductions, b&w photographs. "Frederick Arthur Verner was one of the great artists of western North America in the nineteenth century. (He) was born in Halton County, Ontario, in 1836, (and) lived through the period when the Canadian West was being tamed and settled, the fur trade was coming to an end, and the Indians were submitting to the treaties. He had a glimpse of how it had been at an earlier period, and his paintings, most frequently of Indian and buffalo subjects, typically combine careful observation with an Arcadian vision of a lost era, and are among the most evocative works of Canadian nineteenth century art. (This) is the first major book to be published on Frederick Arthur Verner. (Joan Murray presents) a vivid and far more detailed account of his life than has ever been given before, and in surveying the whole range of his work as an artist, gives it a fresh and sensitive new interpretation." Toronto Oxford University Press 1988 0195406648 / 9780195406641 Second (expanded) Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
418 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This Second Edition covers painting to 1980. A long final chapter treats a crucial fifteen years when there developed in Canada a tremendous interest in other art forms and an apparent falling off of interest in painting. In fact the cry was hear - throughout the western world - that painting was dead. It turned out, however, that this was far from true. Dennis Reid discusses the work of established artists who produced steadily in the period - including Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Gershon Iskowitz, John Meredith, Guido Molinari, Jack Shadbolt, and Claude Tousignant - as well as new arrivals on the scene who have since joined the ranks of leading Canadian artists. Among the more recent painters discussed are David Bolduc, John Boyle, David Craven, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Yves Gaucher, John Hall, Ron Martin, Michael Morris, Norval Morrisseau, Christopher Pratt, Shirley Wiitasalo, and Tim Zuck. Enriched by this overview, and by many additions to the original text, (this) is the widest-ranging and most authoritiative handbook available. Lucid, interesting, and informative, it is still a pleasure to read from first to last." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump on bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

EARLY DAYS IN RICHMOND HILL: A HISTORY OF THE COMMUNITY TO 1930., Stamp, Robert M.

Richmond Hill, Ontario Richmond Hill Public Library Board 1991 0969537603 / 9780969537601 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
400 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps. A local history of Richmond Hill, Ontario. "(D)escribes how the Iroquoian peoples first set up villages in the area - and how the semi-nomadic Mississaugas lost their lands to the British under the 'Gunshot Treaties'. Then came the settlers to claim lots on either side of Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe's newly built Yonge Street - among them, two eccentric aristrocrats, the German William Berczy and the French Comte de Puisaye; the Munshaws; the Stooks; and Thomas Kinnear, the town's most illustrious murder victim. By 1800, York merchant and tavernkeeper Abner Miles had arrived and set up a tavern at the southeast corner of Yonge and Major Mackenzie - the beginnings of the community we know today. Stamp (describes) the effects of the 1837 Rebellion, the development of church and social life, early local politics, and the growth of business, from the Trench Carriage Works and Crosby's Fire Proof store to the greenhouse operations of entrepreneurs William J. Lawrence, John Dunlop, H.J. Mills, and the Endean brothers. He also gives us a glimpse of the picture post card village of the late nineteenth century, with its winter sleigh rides and its summer picnics and dances at Bond Lake Park. As the portrait draws to a close, Richmond Hill has recovered from the losses of World War I; the glory days of the radial railway have come and gone; and Yonge Street has just been paved to make way for the cars and buses that will bring the town into the twentieth century." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
