NOTHING MORE TO DECLARE., Holmes, John Clellon.
5 Holmes, John Clellon. NOTHING MORE TO DECLARE.
Andre Deutsch, 1968, first U.K. edition.
253 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....an account of living and writing by one of the Beat generation, a friend of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and others less famous but no less interesting and significant - and it makes nonsense of the game of 'generationing' by speaking to everyone, anywhere. It begins with four intimate portraits: Ginseberg, Kerouac, Gershon Legman and Jay Landesman, whom John Clellon Holmes met in his early twenties and recognized at once as people he wanted to know well. It was not long before they had all been labelled 'the Beats', but a label is only what the outsider sees. Here we are shown the living reality to which it was attached and are told what it felt like to wear it - and to peel i t off, which is what, as he approached his forties, Mr Holmes discovered that he had done. He is without pomposity and doesn't tell us what we expect to read. He remebers what it was like to sigh after Carole Lombard and to long to be Hum p h r e y B o g art, as well as what it was like to learn how to write. He remembers what his friends brought home from the grocer as well as what they said about communism and sexual freedom. Summing up the sexual revolution, he digs into the ex pe ri en ce o f l iv in g it and makes generalisations seem empty. Pondering on Kennedy's assassination he produces from his personal reaction an interpretation of Oswald so preceptive that it jolts. And assessing the nature of a writer's life a nd the ro le of sp oke sma n, he comes quickly to the conclusion that 'fame, ambition, ego - more and more they seem like husks to me, sad husks housing frightened twitter'. Having made his declaration at the frontier of middle age, he is ready to go his own wa y f or his own rea sons, a wise man and an impressive writer...." Minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-fold areas, light rubbing , mi nor b rowni ng. It has an authenticity, a sincerity, and an air of being alive and present.' Music as well as the words to nineteen songs are now included in this expanded edition of (the book), originally published in 1957. IRISH FOLK MEDICINE., Logan, Patrick.
9 Logan, Patrick. IRISH FOLK MEDICINE.
Belfast Appletree 1999 0862817676 / 9780862817671 Reprint Soft Cover Near Fine
180 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). B&w illustrations. Related bookmark laid in. "Folk medicine was long practised in Ireland and has not completely died out. In many ways it has blended into the New Age interest in natural and non-invasive treatments and holistic medicine. The great mass of the population had no access to a doctor: the local wise woman or bonesetter was the only hope. But folk medicine, particularly before the rise of medical science in the nineteenth century, was always a curious blend of common-sense and nonsense. Practical observation, and natural cures, went hand in hand with useless and often dangerous remedies. To cure a child of dropsy by tying it up in a rope used to hang an innocent man was not likely to help. Whooping cough was not driven away by medicine made from sheep droppings boiled in milk. Dr Patrick Logan traces a comprehensive range of country cures, both for people and animals, practised in Ireland throughout the centuries. Some go back to early or pre-Christian times and beliefs. Others are much more recent and often perpetuate practices discarded by orthodox medicine. The entire book is a striking testimony to human ingenuity, optimism and endurance." "Emphasizing the Victorian age in England and its subsequent tradition in America, this magical survey features now-classic illustrations by Edward Lear, John Tenniel, Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway, Beatrix Potter, Ernest Shepard, Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth and W.W. Denslow. American favorites are also presented: how Howard Pyle created a school of American illustration that produced N.C. Wyeth, while W. W. Denslow offered a unique American fairytale in his illustrations for 'The Wizard of Oz'. The lively text examines the context in which these phenomena took place, including the growth of the publishing industry, the changing attitudes toward children during the Victorian era, and the subsequent invention of the the children's picture book." BARON MUNCHAUSEN AND OTHER COMIC TALES FROM GERMANY., Raspe, R.E. and Others. Edited by Stella Humprhies.
14 Raspe, R.E. and Others. Edited by Stella Humprhies. BARON MUNCHAUSEN AND OTHER COMIC TALES FROM GERMANY.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1971 0460050966 / 9780460050968 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Ulrik Schramm.
110 pp, 8 1/2" H. Red & white pictorial endpapers, light brown boards, repeating the pattern from the endpapers in red, with titling in dark purple on spine and front board. Colour plates and b&w drawings. One of the Children's Illustrated Classics series. "The most familiar of the traditional humorous tales from Germany concern the foolish Men of Schilda, the playful rascal Till Eulenspiegel, and the supreme genius of the tall story, Baron Munchausen. All these characters feature in this attractively illustrated C.I.C. edition. It includes the original Munchausen tales written in English by R.E. Raspe and published in 1785, and also the most famous tales of his imitators. The wholly fantastic travels, campaigns and adventures of the noble Baron can hardly have hoped to convince their readers. They are purest tall-tale nonsense, intriguing to practically every young reader of about seven to eleven in their flights of imaginative fancy. The Baron himself is happily shot as a human cannonball far above the town, attempts to climb to the moon on a quick-growing bean of his own sowing, boasts of encountering a stag with a cherry-tree growing between its antlers, explains how, though his horse was cut in two, he continued to ride on one half only. The famous tales of the hinged cranium and of General Bruin are also included. Such is the fabric of this volume of inspired nonsense." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling, small ghost sticker mark on front flap.
