Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

4 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
6 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." His service took him to the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. C aptured, he was a POW in the United States for nine months. Following his release, Wingfield had some intriguing adventures on the Upper Great Lakes before returning to England. Once home, he used his handwritten notes, kept during his time i n N o r th America, as the basis for an account of his experiences there. This, the only account of the War of 1812 as seen through the eyes of a young seaman, provides a fascinating snapshot of people and places, and of a time that represents a t ur n in g po int in the history of the Great Lakes region. Also included is a Wingfield genealogical description that spans the modern world." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - one very soft small corner c rea se. 9 Beckett, Ian F.W., editor. THE ARMY AND THE CURRAGH INCIDENT, 1914. PUBLICATIONS OF THE ARMY RECORDS SOCIETY VOL. 2.
Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1986, first edition.
456 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0370307380 "The events at the Curragh Camp near Dublin on 20/21 March 1914, and the drama continued in London over the following nine days, have a special significance in British military his tory. The outline of the story is well enough known: Brig.-General Hubert Gough and fellow-officers in the 3rd Cavalry Brigade threatened to resign rather than implement what seemed to them a policy of coercing Ulster into accepting Irish H o m e R u l e ; Gough secured a written guarantee from J.E.B. Seely, Secretary of State for War, that the army would not be so employed; Asquith's Liberal cabinet, however, repudiated the guarantee, which led Seely to resign, along with the Chie f o f th e I mp er ia l General Staff Field Marshal Sir John French and the Adjutant General Lt-General Sir John Spencer Ewart. Although sometimes erroneously referred to as a 'Mutiny', the Curragh Incident does remain one of the very few occasion s in mo der n ti mes wh en th e army asserted itself in face of the civil power in peacetime....The Incident has hitherto generally been seen in terms either of a Liberal plot to coerce Ulster or of a military plot to thwart the democratic process. By emp hasi si ng the wide r i mpa ct of the Incident on the army, this selection of original documents illuminates a number of aspects that have gone unremarked. The army's increasing concern that it might be drawn into civil war in Ulster is ill u str ated , and th e a ccep ted v ersi on o f events in Ireland and London is shown in a new light. New evidence shows the impact of the Curragh Incident on the army outside Ireland, and on the Royal Navy's attitude. The common assumption that A sq uith 's as suming the off ice o f Secr etary of S tate for War on 31 March 1914 closed the Incident is shown here to be false - the morale of the army and the officer corps continued to be affected by the Incident and its aftermath right up to th e out break of the Great War. (Thi s book) throw s impo rtant new light both on British militay history and the ever present Irish 'problem'." JOHN BUCHAN: A MEMOIR., Buchan, William. (John Buchan).
17 Buchan, William. (John Buchan). JOHN BUCHAN: A MEMOIR.
Griffin House, Toronto, 1982.
272 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 887601081 B&w photographs. "John Buchan was a man of remarkably diverse achievements: writer, lawyer, politician, soldier, scholar and, finally, Governor-General of Canada. He was the friend of Roosevelt and of George V, of Henry James and T.E. Lawrence; indeed, there was scarcely a prominent figure of the twenties and thirties whom he did not know. His contemporaries are among the most successful men of their day; his n o v e l s , still widely read, dominated the market between the wars; his histories and biographies are much admired; his achievements in public office demonstrate a gift for government and a visionary wisdom. Yet through all his work there runs a t hr ea d sp un of the simple beliefs by which he stood - courage, truth, loyalty, honour, compassion. Such a creed made him kindly, gentle and much loved; his untimely death provoked an enviable outburst of sorrow and sense of loss. To his p ubl ic, ho wev er , a nd to succeeding generations, he is an enigma, often mistakenly accused of attitudes he never held. This book, by his son, shows John Buchan as he appeared to his family and close friends, an appealing and intimate portrait o f a man whos e fa me rest s - perhaps wrongly - on his skill as a novelist. Drawn from the author's own memories, and from privileged and unpublished sources, this is an elegant study of the private face behind the public mask, in the light of an extr aord inary care er. London Eyre Methuen 1972 413284107 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
230 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(T)he story of the men who, in little more than half a century from 1760, created a network of canals that revolutionised transport and represent-ed the greatest achievement in civil engineering in Britain since the Romans. In those few years between the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in 1761 and the coming of the railways early in the nine-teenth century, tens of thousands of men were involved in canal construction. They came from all classes of society - from aristocratic promoters like the Duke of Bridgewater to Irish peasants who came to dig. This book is the first to deal exclusively with the canal builders and to try to place them in the context of the social, economic, and political world of the eighteenth century, and draws skilfuly on contemporary documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and letters." Burton follows the story through the promoters (like Josiah Wedgwood) and the financiers, to the engineers (including Brindley, Telford, Rennie, Jessop & Smeaton) and the 'navvies' who actually did the digging, "from Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland". Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, a few very light rub lines on front board. 231 pp, 7 7/8" H. Dust jacket design by William Stobbs. B&w drawings. "Bari, a half-breed boy of the North American Indian country, has two driving passions: his love of the wild animals of his home in Northern Ontario, and his great urge to draw them. In these he is encouraged by Paddy, the friendly trapper who brings him up from the age of nine. But it is only after going unwillingly to school and then learning that success does not come without work and hardship that Bari eventually begins to see ahead of him the life on an artist which he had dreamed about for so long. Miss Carruthers taught for many years in a school for Indians in the Canadian bushland. She is a natural storyteller, and (this book) reflects vividly her profound knowledge and affection for the Indians and the wild life of the country." Basset's motto, Credendo Vides - Seing Believing, One Sees - (nine year old) Cassandra, her sceptical older sister, Miranda, and their father, Professor Algernon Aisling, set out in search of the ancient legends. From the flickering flight of faeries to the mermaids' siren songs, a labyrinth-bound Minotaur to a fire-breathing dragon, the Aisling family witnesses firsthand the wonder of mythological worlds. Cassandra's adventures intertwine with her father's scientific scribblings to present both new tales and the essence of classic myths. (This book) takes the reader on a fantastical journey of discovery." Tiny dint on top edge of front board, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light line indentations and rubbing on front/rear panels, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
