4 Black, M.H. Foreword by Geoffrey Cass. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1584-1984.
Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1984 0521264731 / 9780521264730 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
343 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "In 1984 the Press celebrates four hundred years of continuous printing and publishing, and this history gives a readable and not-too-formal introduction to that unique record. It is the story of the development of the printing and publishing arm of the University of Cambridge, from the medieval system of resident stationers who dealt in manuscripts to the present large printing and publishing house which produces computer software and audio cassette tapes as well as books (mostly now computer-set). The narrative is given its proper setting in the development of the University, which has inevitably determined the history of the Press itself; in the history of the book trade as a whole; and in the intellectual and political history of England which has at times affected the fortunes of the Press. There are anecdotes about powerful personalities, from Richard Bentley to Stanley Morison, which give colour and life to the sober black-and-white history of printing and publishing." Previous owner's name label tipped-in on half-title page, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light browning on spine, small ghost sticker mark on rear flap.

17 Greenway, John L. THE GOLDEN HORNS: MYTHIC IMAGINATION AND THE NORDIC PAST.
Athens University of Georgia Press 1977 0820303844 / 9780820303840 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
226 pp, 9 5/16" H. "As an introduction to modern myth, (this book) masterfully encompasses a wide circle of historical and literary materials. John Greenway examines first the nature of time in the mythic consciousness, then the role of the Nordic past as a myth of origins from the Renaissance through the romantics. Only in the various forms of myth can man find identity, the author argues, and he sees the varying images of the Viking past as unconscious attempts by northern nations to legitimize their own values. Central to (his) methodology is his discussion of the sacred in language not itself sacred and the failure of modern myth to make the primitive distinction between the sacred and the profane. The author establishes the theoretical base of his discussion by examining the nature of time in mythic consciousness in terms of Norse myth. After suggesting several ways in which the mythic apprehension of reality conditioned medieval Icelandic narrative, (he) elaborates on the dialectical relationship between myth and reason, using as an example the conversion of the Germanic tribes to Christianity. Maintaining that myth is neither true nor false but always either expressive or not, Greenway traces the origin, rise, and fall of two great modern myths of northern birth: Swedish Gothicism in the seventeenth century and the Ossianic craze of the eighteenth. Both myths, one social, the other literary, illustrate the singular tension in the modern mind between mythic imperatives and the impulse to de-mythologize. Finally, 'The Golden Horns' traces the romantic belief in a 'new mythology' which synthesizes myth and reason from its early acceptance through its eventual repudiation. In his conclusions about the state of myth in the modern world, Greenway postulates that we have inherited the romantic respect for myth as truth but lack the romantic faith in transcendence necessary to establish myth's reality. We are trapped in a physical and moral world which we, as romantics, recognize to be symbolic in its representations, but we lack a belief in the transcendental reality of these symbols." "Packed with authentic atmosphere, the retreat and the desperate lifting of the weary soldiers is seen in its tragic entirety, often through first-hand reco llections of the men who were there. The story of Dunkirk is a dramatic epic of courage and confusion, resulting in a successful and often heroic evacuation....(Harris) describes in vivid detail how the evacuation developed, on a day-by-d a y b a s i s , and destroys more than one of the myths that have come to be associated with Dunkirk. However, the spirit, humour and drama that epitomised what came to be known as the 'spirit of Dunkirk' was, and is, undeniable. Illustrated wit h ma n y co nt em po ra r y photographs, this book provides a complete historical account of the lifting of the British expeditionary force in the first week of June 1940...."
