Recruited in the kingdom of Nepal since the early ninetee nth century, these short, wiry hillmen have served the kings and queens of Britain with such loyalty, tenacity, and incredible bravery that often the sound of their battle cry 'Ayo Gurkhali!' The Gurkhas fought beside the British in the Indian Mutiny, in France and Mesopotamia during World War I, and in every theater during World War II. They have fought as well in countless small wars - 'the sav ag e w ar s of p eace' - including the Northwestern Frontier of India, Malaya, Borneo, and most recently the Falkland Islands. Their courage is legendary. Since 1911, when they first became eligible, thirteen Gurkhas have been awarded the Victori a C ro ss , a n unm atc hed record. "For one hundred and fifty years the Gurkhas have been coming down from their mountain homes of Nepal to join the British Army. I n that time they have carved a reputation as the toughest, bravest and most lovable fighting troops in the world. Certainly they are the best known. (This book) tellls their exciting, humorous and moving story. The vast canvas ranges from t h e f o r mation of the first Gurkha Regiments on April 24, 1815, to their steadfastness during the Indian Mutiny, through the fierce nineteenth century wars on India's turbulent frontiers, into World War I in France, Mesopotamia, and Gallipoli. W e jo i n th em as they add further glory to their reputation during World War II in North Africa, Italy and the jungles of Burma. The post-war period tells of their activities in Malaya and Borneo, and of their last-ditch actions against the Ch ine se on t he co ld, bare mountains of India's disputed northern frontier. It is a story of great endurance, courage far beyond the call of duty, and of staunch loyalty to the British Crown. The Gurkhas suffered 45,000 casualties in the two W orld Wa rs. Th ey have won twelve VCs and countless other decorations for gallantry." "To find the origin of the Gurkha soldier we must go back to the year 1814 - a year in which the British Army fought a war agaisnt one of the toughest enem ies it had ever encountered, before or since: the Gurkhas. Since that year, when they were finally forced to unwilling subjection, the Gurkhas have been 'on our side' in every war fought by Great Britain. One regiment of Gurkhas became te n , a n d i n the latter part of the nineteenth century they fought shoulder to shoulder with British soldiers at Bhurtpore, in the Sikh War, in the Indian Mutiny and the Afghan War. In the First World War, Gurkha battalions were to be found wh er ev e r th e f ig ht ing was most deadly: in France, at Gallipoli, in Palestine and Mesopotamia. For Gurkha regiments there was no 'peacetime' in its literal sense between the two world wars, for they constantly stood watch on India's North-West Fro nti er . An d in th e S econd World War Nepal sent nearly a quarter of a million men to fight against Germany and Japan. The end of the war against Japan brought no peace to the Far East; it also produced the partition of India and the inevit able run dow n of t he In dian Arm y Gurkha regiments. Great Britain retained the 2nd, 6th, 7th and 10th Gurkha Rifles, while the remaining six regiments remained in the newly consituted Indian Army. Brigadier 'Birdie' Smith - himself a distin guish ed an d mu ch deco rat ed G urkha offi cer - tells the story of these four regiments, now known as Britain's Brigade of Gurkhas. It is a story of gallantry in battle, of unswerving loyalty and fortitude."
