2 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Penguin 1995 0140247165 / 9780140247169 Soft Cover Very Good+
337 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs, map, family tree. "In July 1944 a group of conspirators known as Secret Germany attempted to kill Hitler. The mastermind of the conspiracy was Count Claus von Stauffenberg. Who was this charismatic, dashing aristocrat, who was said to be the only man to stare the Fuhrer down? What were the secret teachings that inspired him to the audacious act of assassination? Forty-six serious but failed attempts on Hitler's life in twenty years reflect a strong anti-Nazi movement in Germany. For Stauffenberg, the bomb plot organized by his esoteric circle was more a moral and spiritual necessity than an act of political expediency. Had he succeeded, he might have become the saviour of the national soul. In this remarkable investigation (the authors) explain how Stauffenberg represents a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In his courage and integrity he stands as an atonement for the barbarism of the Third Reich." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

337 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "At thirty-seven, Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg, Chief of Staff of the Reich Reserve Army, was a charismatic figure destined for supreme command. The group of conspirators with whom he conceived the plot to kill Hitler in July 1944 was called 'Secret Germany'. That was also the name of the esoteric circle in which Stauffenberg as a young man had been a disciple of the mystic anti-Nazi magus and poet Stefan George. What was it that motivated this extraordinary aristocratic soldier, with the looks of a Hollywood idol, who was said to be only man to stare the Fuhrer down until he averted his eyes? For Stauffenberg the bomb plot was not a political move but a moral and spiritual necessity. After forty-two serious attempts on Hitler's life in the previous twenty years, why did he too fail? Had he succeeded, some say he would have become the de Gaulle of Germany, saviour of the national soul. Even in failure, there can be no doubt of Stauffenberg's heroism. He stands as an atonement for the Third Reich and a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In this remarkable investigation his whole life explains a troubled past to the present generation of Europeans as few have done in recent history." Tiny crease at bottom corner of pages 83 to 100. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny dint on rear hinge, very light rubbing .

BLUNDERING TO GLORY: NAPOLEON'S MILITARY CAMPAIGNS., Connelly, Owen.
4 Connelly, Owen. BLUNDERING TO GLORY: NAPOLEON'S MILITARY CAMPAIGNS.
Scholarly Resources, Wilmington, 1987, book club edition.
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps/battle plans. " 'You engage, and then you wait and see' - so Napoleon characterized his art of war. The greatest general of his day was a scrambler who never had a plan, strategic or tactica l, that did not break down or change of necessity in the field. He was the master of the broken play, so confident of his ability to improvise, cover his own mistakes, and capitalize on those of his enemies that he repeatedly plunged his arm i e s i n t o uncertain, seemingly desperate situations, only to emerge victorious, 'blundering' to glory. In this absorbing new book, historian Owen Connelly explores for the first time this aspect of Napoleon's battlefield genius. At the same t im e, h e o ff er s a complete account of the Napoleonic campaigns - at once the most concise and most accurate history in print." Faint erased pencil marks on free front end paper, slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrin kli ng at to p/b ott om of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good

5 Douglas, W.A.B. THE CREATION OF A NATIONAL AIR FORCE. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE. VOLUME II (2 - TWO).
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1986.
797 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0802025846 Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps (some fold-out). "From a small militia organization the Canadian air force had grown by 1945 into one of the country's three major autonomous military services. In this second volume of the RCAF's official history, covering the years from 1918 to 1945, W.A.B. Douglas chronicles the force's rapid growth and provides a vivid portrait of the Battle of the At lantic as it was fought from the eastern shores of Canada. Military necessity had brought Canada into the air age. In the peaceful 1920s, civil more than military concerns governed the shape, size, and functions of the RCAF; in the followi n g d e c a d e the rise of international tensions forced the service to concentrate on its military role. During the Second World War the RCAF grew from a few hundred airmen to a force of some eighty squadrons and nearly a quarter of a million pe op le . RC AF s qu adrons, wings, and groups took their place beside other Allied air forces in many theatres of the Second World War, and in the process acquired capabilities in virtually every phase of air warfare. The roots of the RCAF's growi ng rep ut a tio n i n o ver seas theatres, especially in the Northwest Europe campaign, were to be found at home. Responsible for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada, the RCAF trained large numbers of other Commonwealth and Allied air men as we ll a s Ca nadi ans. Charged with the air defence of Canada, it built up a big Home War Establishment which fought on the Pacific Coast and also played a significant part in the defeat of enemy attempts to destroy Allied shipping, par ticu larl y i n t he Ba ttle of th e Atl antic. The latter was a crucial role, sustaining Great Britain and the Allied forces in Europe. Directed from headquarters at Halifax, aircraft of Eastern Air Command ranged from the St Lawrence River to mi d-oce an, u ltim atel y thwa rting Germa n U-bo ats that nearly severed the North Atlantic under British Command. Douglas's account is the first to give proper credit to the RCAF for the part it played in these operations. It also incorporates ne w info rmatio n on perso nalitie s, tec hnology , and i ntelligence." A heavy volume which may require extra postage. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small area of color loss on front board, very light edge wear to boards. Dust jacke t has l ight ed ge we ar/wri nkling w ith a f ew tiny closed t ears, light fading to spine color, light browning at top edge of flaps, minor rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good

THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO., Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by.
8 Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by. THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO.
Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1962 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
368 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. "(T)ells the history of the town of York (Toronto) from the arrival of John Graves Simcoe in 1793 through the War of 1812 until news of the peace reached its citizens in the spring of 1815. The selection of contemporary documents attempts to show why York was chosen for a settlement in the first place, the kind of community that developed, and the effect of the War on that community. Apart from the normal problems connected with the establishment of any settlement, the officials of the town of York were faced with the necessity of creating a worthy capital city for Upper Canada at a time when Kingston, because of its pre-eminence as the military and naval centre of the province and its commercial prosperity, overhadowed all other settlements. The book also illustrates the gradual integration into a corporate body of many diverse elements - senior government officials, discharged soldiers, tradesmen, labourers - so that by 1815 the characteristics of modern Toronto were beginning to be evident in York. This collection of documents and the editor's very full Introduction will provide the student of local history with much primary material and the general reader with an interesting account of the early years of the modern metropolis of Toronto. Minor wear at corners, 50% of text block edges are lightly browned. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has one or two tiny edge chips and tears, light edge creases at top of rear panel, light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing.

191 pp, 4to (11 1/4" h), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos. "Airplane nose art evolved out of necessity for identifying 'friendlies' from enemy aircraft, which quickly became a powerful means of self-expression for military pilots and their crews. From national insignia, squadron markings and number/letter combinations nose art evolved into more personalized artwork, and individual pilots began sporting colourful, even outrageous schemes. Squadrons often used a special crest or colour scheme to identify aircraft in the squadron. This was an aid to groundcrews as well and helped them prepare to service their incoming aircraft during battle..." Blandford, London, 1968, first edition.
183 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. Colour plates. "When war broke out in Europe in August 1914 there were no specialised fighters, only a handful of 'high performance scouts' whose 90 m.p.h. was 'dangerously fast', and even these carried no regular armament. By November 1918, two-gun fighters capable of 120 m.p.h. were standard, and individual designs for more specialised duties had made their appearance. The airmen and aircraft of the First World War - the first air war - h a v e a special place in history which has perhaps bcome over-glamourised. Certainly there were outstanding aeroplanes and heroic airmen, but in both the human and technical fields of aeronautical endeavour 1914-1919 was very much a period of t ri al a nd er ror in which, in the words of one great pioneer, 'some of were lucky and some of us weren't'. Such, too, was the expansion of the combatant air forces, once it was realised how decisive a role aircraft were playing in the overall wa r e ffo rt, th a t f or the first time on any scale organised flying training became a necessity, creating a demand for 'school' aeroplanes in ever-increasing numbers. The 80 aircraft in this volume reflect the evolution of such machines throug hou t th e fi rst trul y form ative period of military aviation history. The period 1914-1919 is selected so as to include certain important types designed during the war, but which arrived too late for combat service." Unpaginated foreword, introductory essay and list of plates plus 130 b&w plates (photographs, plans, drawings) and frontispiece, 4to (12 1/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. "Forming originally a part of the state of Virginia, Kentucky was peopled la rgely from Virginia and nearby colonies; thus the economic system, the social fabric and the cultural outlook of Kentucky resembles these features of life in the Old Dominion. Bringing with them a love of classic architecture engendered by as s o c i a t ion with the great houses in the valleys of the James and the Potomac, it is no surprise to discover that a definite classic spirit premeates the more formal types of architecture in Kentucky. In the early pioneer period, of necessity, r ec ou rs e wa s had to primitive forms. Beginning with the log cabin with its 'wattle-and-daub' chimney, architectural expression in Kentucky passed through successive improvements, culminating eventually in the great classic-porticoed brick mansio ns whi ch to th is day lend so much charm to the countryside. Architecture in Kentucky parallels the career of architecture upon our Atlantic seaboard. There is this difference, however, that while architecture in Kentucky reflects most of the v ogu es a nd fas hion s o f the seaboard forms, it records these changes somewhat belatedly. That is to say a style or a fashion well known in the maritime states will often not make its appearance in Kentucky for from ten to thirty years. Once acc lima ted, how ever , suc h vo gues are as likely to persist here as in other areas of America." 279 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "1864. London is a city in transition. The Constantine Affliction - a strange malady that kills some of its victims and physically transforms others into the opposite sex - has spread scandal and upheaval through society. Scientific marvels and disasters, such as clockwork courtesans, the alchemical fires of Whitechapel, electric carriages, and acidic monsters lurking in the Thames, have forever altered the face of the city. Pembroke 'Pimm' Halliday is an aristocrat with an interest in criminology, who uses his keen powers of observation to assist the police or private individuals - at least when he's sober enough to do so. Ellie Skyler, who hides her gender behind the byline 'E. Skye', is an intrepid journalist driven by both passion and necessity to uncover the truth, no matter where it lies. When Pimm and Skye stumble onto a dark plot that links the city's most notorious criminal overlord with the Queen's new consort, famed scientist Sir Bertram Oswald, they soon find the forces of both high and low society arrayed against them. Can they save the city from the arcane machinations of one of history's most infamous monsters - and uncover the shocking origins of 'The Constantine Affliction'?" 114 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H), soft cover. "...the first book to apply the modern understanding of the physical world to questions of prayer and divine providence, reconciling modern science with the Christian view. Is a personal God who interacts lovingly with His Creation a credible concept in our scientific age? Do miracles happen? Can prayer change anything? Why does evil exist? (This book) brings new and often surprising insights to bear on these familiar questions. The author's discussion also includes a reevaluation of God's relation to time. Polkinghorne argues for the necessity of a dipolar description, relating God to both time and eternity, and he discusses the consequences of this issue for an understanding of incarnation, sacrament, and the nature of hope." Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1992.
238 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. ISBN 0521428920 Maps, drawings. "When maritime transport and communication depended on muscle and wind-power, the Mediterranean Sea functioned as a symbiotic force between the civilisations which surrounded it, at on ce the major dividing barrier and the major connecting element. In this study, the technological limitations of maritime traffic are considered in conjunction with the peculiar geographical conditons within which it operated and which led t o t h e e s tablishment of major sea lanes on trunk routes along which traffic could move safely, efficiently, and economically. These trunk routes remained virtually unchanged from antiquity to the sixteenth century, and eventually constituted e co n om ic a n d st rategic maritime frontiers between civilisations. At the same time, the technological limitations of the oared galley meant that coasts and islands along the trunk routes had also to be held, a necessity which favoured geogr aph ica ll y t he Chr is ti an West over the world of Byzantium and Islam." My story will show how Indian affairs were when the (Second World War) was over: the rapid deterioration of the adminstration as the small British cadre of civil officials was hurriedly replaced by Indian, and as independence became more and more certain; in particular the lawlessness which so quickly set in: the almost insupportable burden that was placed upon and successfully borne by the Indian Army and its few British officers, and how gr e at was the debt that India, the Commonwealth and indeed the world owed to the devotion of these officers, their skill, patience and staunchness: that we had no honourable alternative but to quit India: and, lastly, why, unless Russia first collaps es , India - Hindustan, if you will - is in grave danger of becoming communist in the not distant future. Of necessity the tale starts with a description of Eastern Command and its peoples. A more detailed description of Hinduism I have relagated to Appendix I. Without some knowledge of that system it is impossible either to understand the political and communal affairs of which the book speaks or to be aware of the bearing of Hinduism upon the past and, above all, the future of India." Ciga ret te odor inside, light browning to endpapers, foxing mark on title page and dedication page, light browning to edges of textblock - tiny foxing marks on top of textblock, a few faint areas of discoloration on boards, slight fading to spine colour , ve ry light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
